Burrow 20

Hammock Gear Top Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Hammock Gear makes some of the highest quality lightweight down top quilts for hammockers and ground dwellers available anywhere. We take pride in our materials, craftsmanship and customer service.  For ground sleepers, we recommend ordering the wide width, as well as pairing your quilt with a ground pad attachment kit:  http://www.hammockgear.com/ground-pad-attachment-kit/

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Burrow 20˚

The Burrow works for both hammockers and ground-dwellers alike. It is a lightweight sleeping quilt that takes the insulation of a traditional sleeping bag and puts it all on the top and sides, leaving the back (which insulation is compressed and unusable anyway) open. Many hammockers use top quilts in lieu of a traditional sleeping bag because they are easier to slide into when it's time to sleep. The Burrow is designed with a half taper, vertical torso baffles, foot box and a cinched top. Comes complete with a stuff sack and storage bag.

The 20° Burrow is the perfect solution for staying warm in a hammock. With a conservative rating of 20°F, and filled with premium quality, water resistant, 850 fill-power goose down, it will keep you warm during colder seasons.

Goose Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 5.5 liters, but due to the nature of goose down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Top Quilt Advantages

Having found the Hammock Gear website, chances are you are aware of some of the advantages of top quilts. Their growing popularity, with both the hammock crowd and ground dwellers alike, is due to their function and versatility, especially as compared to traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. Some of these advantages include:

  • ease of entry and exit
  • ease of movement once inside
  • ease of adjustment
  • no wasted insulation under the body
  • no undesired hood-on-the-face
  • no claustrophobia effect
  • weight savings
  • volume savings

All Premium Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon (except for 67 taffet) which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. The weights in the table above assume Argon 67 material. Argon 90 adds approximately 0.75 oz to final weight, per shell. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.

All of our quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing a quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off.

Two options are available: Sewn footbox or Zipper Footbox. The sewn option is a permanent footbox approximately 20 inches long, measured from the bottom. A sewn footbox is fully enclosed/fully insulated, and thus allows no cold spots. It is recommended for 0° - 20° temps. The Zipper version allows the quilt to be fully opened and to lie flat. It is recommended for temps above 20°. When closed the zipper version, which has a drawcord closure, has an opening of approximately 1/2 inch. Some users, depending on conditions/temps, will use a clothing item or small piece of foam pad to plug this hole. Many HG customers enjoy using their quilts in the home, and love the versatility of using the quilt “blanket style” or as a “throw”, and the zipper version fits the bill.

Our top quilts are built with a standard Half-Taper design. Custom work is available if you have different requirements.

Cord Loops

Quilts come standard with attachment cord loops (these can be omitted by request).

  • the best down bag ! ever...

    by Jack – 17th Aug 2018

I absolutely love Hammock Gear products. I own a few bags now and they are perfect to use, super high quality in design & construction, will service for many years. Great small company best service great workmanship. Thanks heaps from Australia.

  • keeps my pack light and my body warm!

    by jake – 30th Jul 2018

Used my top quilt for the first time backpacking in the glacier peak wilderness in Washington this weekend. Super light and packable! Im a ground dweller and the burrow 20 (in wide size and long length) is just what I need. Love it!

  • great wait, great weight

    by Darin Kramer – 25th Jul 2018

Once again another great product from hammock gear. I purchased two burrows (40degree) and two under quilts (40 degree) about two years ago. All at still doing awesome and holding there loft and quality. Going on a 2 night trip to the whites next month and wanted something a little more warmer (20degree). Once again great quality product received. Tested it out indoors and was sweating in under two minutes in this thing. In lightweight thermal sleepwear I can get my 40 degree burrow down to about 30-35 degree comfortably. So now worries about being cozy down to 10-15 with my new 20 burrow.
The lead time for my burrow was 8 weeks. So it would be cutting it close to my trip. But the busy beavers at Hammock Gear got it to me in 4weeks. What a bonus.
    Thanks guys,
    Loyal customer for life

  • Exceeded expectations

    by Elizabeth – 11th Jul 2018

I wanted something far lighter and more compact than my old sleeping bag. While this quilt delivers big time on that, I did not anticipate how super comfortable it would be (far less confining than a sleeping bag) and very warm..
A note: because I am small I bought the narrower width and it was plenty wide when used as a quilt..

  • Exceptional Quality! And the price is great too.

    by John E. – 4th Jun 2018

We now have 4 Burrow 20 quilts in our family and all have the sewn foot box. Each and every one of them is exquisitely made to the level that I’m disappointed now when I look at the big box brand bags I still own. We use ours both on the ground and in hammocks and I find them to have conservative temp ratings (meaning plenty warm at 20 degrees) and are super comfy refardless of how you sleep.

  • burrow 20

    by Unknown – 7th May 2018

This top quilt arrived in a large box, not compressed with care instructions. It is extremely comfortable and warm and easy to get right around my shoulders. Perfect addition to my hammock setup.

  • Großartiges Produkt

    by Andrea – 26th Apr 2018

  • A Great Quilt

    by WaywardAngler – 24th Apr 2018

I got mine in burnt orange and it's a beautifully crafted quilt. I only gave it 4 stars because of the snaps, which appear to have been upgraded to a zipper in the new design. In retrospect, I should have done the sewn foot box as I am apparently a restless sleeper and they quickly unsnap. I've sewn some grograin loops in at the snaps and tied the foot box shut, problem solved. The zipper would have made it 5 stars for me but it wasn't an option when I ordered. I'm still very, very happy with the quilt. I have down bags that are 40 years old and I have no doubt this one will last the rest of my days and then some. I've since ordered two more underquilts and they are excellent.

  • Temps were below 20 degrees and I didnt even notice.

    by Toby Hill – 25th Mar 2018

Finally able to test out my 20 degree Burrow top quilt with temps dipping down into the teens. It was everything Hammock Gear promised it would be: light, comfortable, and it kept me more than warm -it surpassed my expectations. The custom colors are a plus. Hammock Gear’s customer service is exemplary. They were readily available for all my questions before making my purchase. Each representative was knowledgeable, helpful, and easy to talk to.

  • 1st quilt, very happy

    by C.Wargo – 16th Mar 2018

This was my 1st foray into the quilt world, but based on many hours of reading reviews and watching videos, i finally settled on the burrow 20. i got the +2oz overstuff, and couldnt be happier.

was pretty shocked at how light it was compared to other 20deg bags. great all around product, and pretty quick considering it was a made to order item. most likely will be adding another quilt for my son soon.

  • very Satisfied with my purchase.

    by David – 26th Feb 2018

This is my first quilt and it is very well made , the Craftsmanship is Impeccable , I live only used it twice after receiving it and is much easier to use than the sleeping bag that I had been using. I see a Repeat purchase from them for my hammock Accoutrements

  • Dangerously cozy, feather light

    by Mark Paxton – 22nd Feb 2018

Just received it, weeks early. The stiching is artfully, perfectly done. It is impossibly light and generously sized for a 6-4, 210.pound customer. The fabric can only be deascribed as silky.

One of the snaps was defective and followup and customer service were unparalled. Just a great choice in outdoor gear.

  • very Pleased

    by Unknown – 29th Jan 2018

I am very pleased with both the quality & performance

  • Absolutely speechless

    by J-fish – 21st Jan 2018

I’ve been hammock camping for serveral years now and I didn’t think there was any way for me to improve upon it, until I spent serveral nights in the Burrow 20. The temperature on my trip at it’s lowest point was 19 degrees. Considering that I am a Florida boy and I feel the cold more so than most people, the fact that I was completely warm the entire time completely blew my mine. They are very generous with their temperature ratings. I really like the features on it too. The cinch at the top to tighten it up around your neck/face and the snap on the back to keep it in place are really nice touches. I really cannot think of anything negative to say about this quilt, and if I could give more than 5 stars I would! I’ll never use a sleeping bag again.

  • First time I haven't ranked Hammock Gear 5 Stars Burrow 20

    by Adam Rabon – 18th Jan 2018

I have purchased several products over the years from hammock gear and I have always ranked them 5 stars until now. I am using the .67 material on my Burrow twenty, so maybe HG used weaker snaps for it. I can understand that. However the snaps are so weak they pop open with little to no effort. I finally got to use my top quilt for the first time at Hammock Con 18. Every night I used the quilt it always came open. I am hoping that Hammock Gear is willing to make this right so I can change this review to 5 stars. But as it stands I can only give the Burrow 20 at this time 2 stars.

    Response from Hammock Gear:
I'm emailing you now about this issue Adam. Terribly sorry for the defective snaps! We will, of course, make it right.

  • Great Gear!!

    by Collin H. – 16th Jan 2018

I wanted to use this quilt before reviewing it as much as my initial impression was that it is awesome! I have previously been a ground dweller struggling to find comfort in a mummy bag. As much as I thought the 15 degree quality mummy bag I used for years was great, I will never go back. I was beginning to encounter claustrophobia all bundled up in a liner, in a mummy, in a tent. The ease of entry and exiting of the quilt is really helping my comfort level while settled in. The quilt is incredibly comfortable and I think it is truthful that their temp ratings are conservative. I understand conventional ratings of bags to mean they will keep you alive to that temperature, not necessarily comfortable. I do mostly winter backpacking in Pennsylvania. For some reason it’s been extra cold my last few outings, right around 0F to low single digits. I have not been comfortable in these conditions and even had to do some snuggling with my buddy one night just to make it. I was using a 15 degree Mountain Hardware Ultralamina bag with a 20 degree Sea to Summit liner, on top of an insulated Nemo pad on top of a closed cell foam pad. But these quilts are another story! I used a 10 degree Incubator underquilt with a 20 degree Burrow overfilled with 2oz at 0 degrees last weekend. I was honestly warm and comfortable. This really impresses me. These quilts are so light, compress well, and are far more comfortable for me than a mummy bag! Thank you HG for your help and for making such great gear!

  • Top Notch

    by Brent Hamilton – 19th Dec 2017

Thank you to the Hammock Gear team for getting my top quilt ready in time for my winter trip! The customer service here at Hammock Gear is absolutely top notch, as are the products. After ordering my Burrow 20 top quilt to complement my Incubator 0 under quilt that I ordered last year, my sleep system is complete. Both are so compact when packed and so warm when in use - I am simply amazed with how warm I am hanging in my hammock on cold Iowa/Minnesota winter nights! You won't be disappointed with Hammock Gear!

  • AWESOME ! Camping is good for the family!! <3

    by DC Bray – 3rd Dec 2017

We all have Hammock Gear quilts now! I've camped in the Burrows 20 in temps ranging from 18 degrees and up. I have a thin reflective material in my hammock sleeve, a Hammock Gear 3/4 underquilt and this Burrows 20 top quilt - and stay roasty-toasty warm. FACTS: 1) Superb quality. 2) Superb customer service. Seriously, do I need to say more? Btw, we own 4 HG quilts - this is my 3rd Burrows 20. As family members come of age to start backpacking, they get their own HG quilts. Everyone looks forward to that "mark of age" - and thank you Hammock Gear for contributing to our family's close-knit love for each other and camping!

  • great price and very warm

    by Spider Monkey – 18th Nov 2017

Got to spend another awesome weekend in the Red River Gorge. It fell into the low twenties on Friday night and I used this with the econ 20 underquilt. I was toasty warm and could easily going to lower temps. I a warm sleeper so take that into account. Their products are always Top Notch and this is just another example of a great quilt at a great price

  • Great quality; great customer services

    by D. Joshua Elliott – 14th Nov 2017

I now have a top quilt to match my underquilt. Same great craftsmanship. This is just a company that does things well - it makes me want to find more business to give to them. I just got it last week so haven't been camping yet but it made for a great Sunday afternoon nap!

  • Burrow 20 and Econ Burrow 10

    by David M – 21st Oct 2017

I love these top quilts!! It is quite versatile and very light. It was the only warmth needed when my wife and I did the John Muir Trail in a record snow year.

It dries fast, lofts up thick, and is just a pleasant experience in the hang or on the ground. (Get a wide cut if you plan to use it in your tent.)

The Burrow Econ is definitely the most bang for the buck and HG has great quality and customer service. I own 2 Burrows and 2 Incubators, as well as the hammock pillows and am very pleased with all the products.

Keep on doing what you're doing HG.

  • Superlight and warm

    by Andreas – 19th Sep 2017

The burrow 20 is warm and superlight. Highly recommended.

  • very happy

    by Unknown – 29th Aug 2017

I am very happy with my burro 20 top quilt. Is very warm soft and lightweight. The construction of the quilt looks to be very top notch. Looks like I'll have this quilt for a very long time the way it's built. Along with my underquilt I am very warm and toasty in my hammock.

  • Used it for two weeks at Philmont

by John St. John – 2nd Aug 2017

I read and read different reviews on quilts and finally settled on a Hammock Gear top quilt. I was on an 11 day trip at Philmont in New Mexico over 80 miles with tens down to 30 F and as high as 50 F. I sleep on my side and don't find mummy bags to be comfortable. I considered a Zeno bag with stretching but eventually decided on a quilt. This was a great choice for me.

The product weighs as specified and fits in a stuff sack packed that is about 5 inches in diameter and about 8-9 inches long. I threw it in a trash bag at the bottom of my pack with a sleeping pad (thermal estate inflatable). It's fantastic, I never slept cold, the footbox is great and on warm nights I simply pulled the quilt. I washed it with nikwax down when I returned doing the cleaning by hand in a bathtub then dried on air dry with two tennis balls. The construction is of very high quality. I had a slight fear about the snaps that let you connect the top of the quilt around your neck as they are strong snaps and I feared the material might tear but it's really tough.

I realize I didn't push the temperature but for ground sleeping on a pad for a 45 plus adult who side sleeps it was like being in a bed with a down comforter.

I highly recommend the product for cold night summer backpacking both for temperature and weight on extended trips. The loft pops right up after about 10 minutes when you lay it out and it's easy to tuck under you at night to keep out drafts.

  • Why did I wait so long

    by MacCherokee – 22nd Jun 2017

Why, oh why did I wait so long to get good quilts?!
The workmanship and materials are outstanding.
    Customer service was superb.
I can't say enough good about this company and their product.
Thanks guys you have a customer for life!

  • top quality product!

    by Myrl E Rodgers – 20th Jun 2017

I ordered this for a hiking trip in the Great Smoky Mountains. I got the burrow late and had to use a couple small down blankets I have. The blankets worked great and the burrow would have been overkill. I will say I look forward to using this when fall and winter comes around. Looks as nice as my 0 degree incubator which I can only brag on. Top notch quality! Highly recommend!

  • Awesome piece of gear!

    by Ryan E. – 19th Jun 2017

Its absolutely perfect! The fabric, the colors, the stitching, the baffles, the construction and the glorious down! It lofts up so quick and so fast!! Love the stuff sacks too, very handy. I've already used the TQ once and it performed flawlessly. Super warm, super cozy! Easy in and easy out! Love my Burrow 20 and I would definitely buy another :-)

  • Warm and Cozy on Cold Nights in the Woods

    by Dan – 14th Jun 2017

I purchased an incubator20/burrow20 combo a year ago and just bought another pair for my girlfriend. They've kept me toasty on nights when my hiking partner (with different gear of the same temperature rating) was unable to sleep due to cold. The pair are fairly lightweight and are easy to carry through tough terrain. Highly recommend.

  • Great quilt

    by Tony – 31st May 2017

Great quilt. Very warm. I love the color of the blue. Also, it compacts into a very small stuff sack for such a fluffy 10 degree quilt.

Only quibble is that the button snaps were very, very tight on the foot box. I was afraid that the fabric would tear when I tried to open it. The fabric didn't tear for the first few but the last button snap broke, probably because I was gripping it wrong trying to avoid tearing the fabric. I am going to buy a snap kit, drill out the snap and then add a new snap. It's a pretty simple procedure. Just a little bit of time and about $6 cost but a bit bummed because it was during my first trip out into the Willamette Forest. I will use some WD40 on the other snaps before using again.

  • great versatile quality product

    by Aimee – 15th May 2017

Keeps me warm, dry, and easy access in and out as well as regulating my body temperature by opening up foot pouch some or unsnapping the shoulders if I get too over heated. Finally ready to make my hammock setup complete with one of their underquilt too! Great costumer service and quality products and super lightweight! Highly recommend!

  • goodbye, bulky sleeping bags

    by chance margheim – 11th May 2017

I've been using a sleeping bag for years. The problem with bags is you have to switch out for different temperature ratings. That can be challenging in the mountains, where the temperatures change quickly. I also find them really hard to get out of at night (that damn zipper!) So, I gave quilts a try. I spent a chilly night on the AT with this quilt. It was far lighter and more compressible than my down bag. I felt no draft and was completely comfortable. Plus, getting up in the middle of the night was easy without that zipper. I appreciate that this thing doubles as a blanket and a bag. The versatility is key for longer treks on the trail.

  • Game Changer

    by Brittany Polinski – 4th May 2017

These quilts have been a god send for us for camping! We like to share blankets so having our own sleeping bags didn't work. However, these quilts are perfect! We tried sharing one of the extra large ones but it just wasn't quite wide enough. Now that we have two, they will be perfect! Worth every penny!

  • Customer for life.

    by Rafael Lee – 2nd May 2017

Let me tell you a quick story. I previously had a custom Burrow 20 made by Harry and the crew. It arrived in an absurdly quick timeframe. It was amazingly warm and packable with impeccable craftsmanship. I was ecstatic. Fast forward to me taking it on a trip to the Grand Canyon and subsequently misplaced it. I was devastated. I contacted Harry for a replacement and he graciously offered a code to help offset the cost a bit. I know have another quilt and am beyond grateful to Harry. I'll be a customer for life. Have my eye on some of the economy line of summer quilts.

  • Toasty and super light

    by Jerry Willis – 23rd Apr 2017

We purchased these for my wife and I. We've never used top quilt before. Weighing in at slightly more than a pound and compressing to just larger than a nalgene bottle, these saved us so much valuable weight and pack space.

Our trip was only down into the mid 40's. But we stayed warm all night in our hammocks, but able to keep from getting to hot too. Very wide range of temp usage. Do much easier to get into and out of in a hammock than a sleeping bag!

We LOVE our quilts and the workmanship on them is stellar. Highly recommend. Emailed Hammock Gear about bottom quilts for our Hennessy hammocks. HG recommended another cottage industry vendor, as they don't make the specific model I needed.

Great customer service. Had several weeks from order to delivery, but that was expected from the info on the website. Can't recommend enough!

  • awesome company

    by joe – 21st Apr 2017

This is not really a review of the quilt cause sadly I have not had a chance to use it yet but more so praise for this company. I received a borrow 20 second hand and all the down seemed shifted to the edges and no matter what I tried I could not shift it back towards the middle. I contacted the company and with hesitation they told me to send it to them and would take a look at it. I received the quilt back extremely fast and an email stating the fixed the problem and added additional down at no charge. They also included a free stuff sack. In my opinion they did not have to do any of this for free but being an awesome company and standing behind their product they exceeded all my expactions. Hammock gear is a top notch company with some of the best customer service I have ever dealt with.

  • Wonderful, simply wonderful

    by David Haines – 15th Apr 2017

A wonderful thing to behold. Incredibly flexible design, beautifully made, warm - what a treasure.

  • Where do I start?

    by Dadburnet – 6th Apr 2017

I got a sewn foot box with two extra ounces. This thing is AMAZING. The 20 degree with the extra fill is super warm and beautifully made. I could go on and on, but the short story...buy one with some extra fill and the longevity and extra warmth is awesome.

  • Not like this quilt needs another review, but here was my experience..

    by Caleb – 6th Apr 2017

I took a two day trip on the approach trail up to Springer Mountain. Beautiful weather, but very cold. I am a ground sleeper and a recent convert to top quilts. I paired the 20 degree quilt with a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm and was surprisingly warm. Nearest town on my phone was in the low 20's. Im not sure what temperature it was at base camp but it was definitely in the teens to low 20's. My hiking partner had on all layers, 30' Gander sleeping bag, 2.5 pad (not Xtherm), and emergency blanket on top and was just warm enough to sleep after adding the emergency blanket on top. I on the other hand had on briefs, shorts, hiking socks (because I have the button footbox - put on good socks and cinch another sock in the hole at end of footbox and your good to go), and a shirt. Woke up at about 2:00 AM with a freezing head and neck... going to add a down hood from Zpacks to my arsenal to keep head warm. I put on my ultralight jacket with hoody and slept till the morning light. Really impressed with this quilt. Thanks again HG

  • burrow 20

    by Unknown – 4th Apr 2017

I love it. It keeps me warm and very light. Wasnt sure about buying since i cant see in person but am very pleased with this product. VEry well made.

  • A++ for craftsmanship!

    by Scott – 19th Mar 2017

I was thoroughly impressed, but not surprised by the quality of this item. The only reason I say this is because I already own an incubator 20 which surprised me when delivered. I have slept on the ground once with this TQ and a 3.7 R value pad. The temps dipped into the mid 20s and I was as comfortable as could be with a mid weight base layer. I'm a cold sleeper so I was pleasantly surprised by this. I've also only slept hanging once. Used both the incubator and burrow 20s with a lightweight base layer. Temps were mid 30s and I was even more comfortable than on the ground. All in all, hammock gear makes great products that deliver exactly what they state. Thank you for the excellent pieces!

  • Burrow 20f over stuff

    by Benson Burner – 14th Mar 2017

Love my custom burrow. So puffy, so comfy, I do so enjoy digging into it while on top of the incubator, snug as a bug!!

  • easy in/easy out

    by Unknown – 13th Mar 2017

A sleeping bag in a hammock is a hassle but the burrow makes it easy and With my underquilt, I slept like a baby <32

  • lightweight warmth

    by Bob V – 3rd Mar 2017

    Another Awesome product from HG.
What can I say top quality lightweight and very warm.
I have the HG 20* Incubator and the 20* Burrow to compliment it. These are very light and super warm quality is top notch.
I also have the Cuben fiber standard tarp with doors from HG same deal a 10 on quality and customer service.
    I can't recommend them enough.

  • W O W! Just W O W, the new Burrow Design is perfection

    by Chris M. Christian "Hangs4Fun" – 1st Mar 2017

Hammock Gear has great people to talk to, some of the finest materials available, high performing designs, and amazing craftsmanship, few would argue this. But their NEW Burrow design (let's call it the 2.0) is about as close to perfection as you can get.

You have to ask for the "new Burrow design". And what you get is some minor but great adjustments to their original Burrow design. What they have done is gone with baffle tubes that go in different directions. The foot box has horizontal baffle tubes which switch to vertical baffle tubes from the footbox to the head, finishing with a final horizontal baffle tube at the head end.

So what does that get me? I have found that loft is maximised through use and the down stays where you want it. In the main section over your torsoe and upper legs, being vertical keeps the down and loft right over your core. You have no settling of down off your core down to the sides. Yet at the foot box horizontal allows you to move down all around the top and sides. Even their sewn in circular bottom of the foot box is baffled. Finally, I really like how they switch back to horizontal at the head end, which creates a nice continuous cushion for your neck, instead being rows of baffles.

Whether you choose Argon 67 or 90, that material is super light, yet tough, and gives a silky feel to it. The NoSeeUm baffles makes the quilting feel like it has nothing there and allows the quilt to feel light and super soft. You will stare at their craftsmanship, and wonder how they hid all of the seams. I've only used it to 40° so far, but was very surprised that I can use it in my house (~70°). I did 2 ounces of overfill and suspect it would go to 10°, which makes it more impressive how comfy it is at inside temperatures.

I just stuff it straight into the bottom of my ZPacks Arc Haul into my dry bag, and as I stuff the rest of my gear, I've noticed that it compresses down with the HG Incubator 20° to about half the volume that my ClimaShield quilts did. This quilt calls my name and I look forward to slipping into it at the end of the day.

If you have been on the fence, I would not hesitate to purchase this quilt (in fact I ordered another one). They are a pleasure to talk to, use great materials, have high performing designs, and their craftsmanship is second to none! Be sure to ask for the new Burrow design and you will not be disappointed. For a look-see of this new design check out sector seven and another great Shug's video: https://youtu.be/xrGfSgt1w2E

  • So comfortable

    by Eric J – 26th Feb 2017

I own both the Burrow 20 (wide + snap foot-box) and the Incubator 20 (+2 oz over-fill) and they are both extremely comfortable and very warm. I have only experimented indoors so far, but I am absolutely certain that I'll be warm during my early spring and mid-summer camping trips in Ontario, Canada.
I am so pleased with both that I have ordered the Phoenix 40 with an extra ounce of over-fill as a lighter weight option as a gift for a friend..

    Love them all. Thanks HammockGear

  • Excellent warmth and comfort!

    by Hills_Hiker – 19th Feb 2017

I love this top quilt! Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail make this my favorite piece of gear. The sewn foot box is awesome and I get nice and comfy real quick in my Warbonnet Blackbird XLC very well. I love the cinch cord on the top and I draw it somewhat taut and just tuck my head underneath it instead of snapping the button around my neck. The excess shockcord when you do this needs a place to tuck away so be aware that you will have some string around your head area; I wish there was a small pouch to stuff this in to although that is a minor inconvenience and I am using the cord contrary to its purpose as it tucks inside the TQ where I have my head (if I used it as designed, it wouldn't be a bother to me whatsoever. It stays put all night and is very soft and quiet; no crinkly or stiff feeling AT ALL! Bravo, HG!!!

  • Best quilt available.

  • Very good quality Burrow 20

    by Tom Smith – 7th Feb 2017

Good service and product came as advertised. Extremely lightweight. We plan to pair it with a Thermarest neoair xlite for ground/shelter sleeping on the AT. It fits great with our new ultralight gear.

  • Burrow & Incubator 20's are awesome product!! *******

    by Charlie Norton – 6th Feb 2017

Finally got to test out my Burrow & Incubator 20's this past weekend on the AT near Spring Mtn shelter above Hot Springs NC. I couldn't of ask for anymore for the 1st test. Temp got down to 26 with a 25-30 mph gusting wind till about 3 AM. Clouds moved in and then came the sleet and a few snow flurries. I was very skeptical about staying warm. Laid down wearing base-layer, insulated pants and down jacket but quickly shed the down jacket and insulated pants. HG CF tarps and Quilts are well worth the money and the pounds of pack weight loss is a great bonus. Looking forward to getting Burrow 50 and maybe a Custom Pheonix 50 this summer. Thanks HG!

  • Better than the rest!

    by Matt Brown – 31st Jan 2017

I have purchased products from several of the cottage vendors, but always find myself coming back to Hammockgear. My burrow is one of my favorite pieces of kit. The craftmanship and service you get from Hammockgear is among the best. If you are deciding between a Burrow and something else. Pick the Burrow. You'll be glad you did.

  • Best weight savings

    by Unknown – 27th Jan 2017

This ultralight product will take your current base weight a pound or two down (Which is a lot when you already have an ultralight kit). I took it on my previous prep hike for the AT, and half way through my hike I thought I had forgotten my quilt. I cannot recommend this product enough to anyone who wants to shed easy pounds on their base weight.

  • Fantastic Service and Product

    by Mick Graham – 25th Jan 2017

Thank you for your fantastic customer service . I am in the UK and your e mails were reassuring. The Burrow 20 degree top quilt is a quality product. I used it camping in the Piney Piney Woods (thanks Shug) last Sunday. I was toasty warm in the Burrow despite the snow and ice. Comfortable to sleep in and the draw cord round the top kept my shoulders warm. One day all sleeping bags will be like this. Lighter than my Rab Ascent 500 and packs down to about half the size. Fantastic. The customs duty was a bit steep £80. in all but I love the quilt Thanks!

  • Performed above expectations!

    by Unknown – 21st Jan 2017

Bought this quilt for my brother for Christmas. Fortunately we had temps down to the single digits. He said the bad took him down to 15° before he had to add his booster bag. The bag is a perfect fit. We got the wide, long bag due to him being 6'3" 270lbs. This bag convinced me to purchase one for myself! Great work guys! GO BUCKS!

  • Burrow 20 wide

    by Gary D – 10th Jan 2017

I love it! I have been waiting to get a down overguilt for some time and now I have the best. The stitching is flawless, it comes with its own stuff sack and also a larger storage bag so that it can relax when stored for longer times, like at home. I picked purple as one of the colors and I really like it. I actually haven't used it yet so I can't say anything on its temperature rating. I would recommend that you put some paraffin or candle wax on all the snaps when you get it to make them easy to unsnap. I learned this a long time ago to help reduce pullout.

  • Awesome

    by Mike V – 1st Jan 2017

I got the burrow 20 with 2 oz of overfill and the sewn footboy for Christmas. I slept in it in conjunction with my incubator 20 a few days later. It got down to 19F that night and I was toasty warm the whole time. I look forward to using it in the woods and I would recommend it to others. Keep up the good work Hammockgear!

  • Burrow 20

    by Fred – 23rd Dec 2016

Received my Burrow 20 with 2 ounces overstuff, regular length, wide width, and snap foot box. On my scale, it weighs 22.89 ounces in the stuff sack which seems to be spot on with the website specifications.

The quality is impeccable, and I can't wait to try it out after the holidays. I ordered mine with cinnamon brown outside and black inside, which matches my Incubator 20.

I have no doubt that I will be toasty warm!

  • Seems to be quality but cold spots, underfilled

    by Jim – 15th Dec 2016

My 20f burrow is hardly that because of the cold spots. The down shifts to the sides, and I am left with not much down in the most important areas. I have never had this issue with the other down products I've had.
The weight is to spec per the site, so it's not that. The fill to baffle size ratio seems to just allow the down to constantly move around.

    Hammock Gear response:
Hello Jim, please contact us at sales@hammockgear.com about your quilt. We'd be happy to take a look at it for you, as there could be a fill issue. We hope we can resolve this for you.

  • Cozy warm

    by David R – 14th Dec 2016

Working with the Hammock Gear team is a great experience. It is very well stitched and the sewn foot boot is strong. I took it out a few times and tested it down as low as 7 degrees, with a parka wrapped around the footbox and I was warm. The quilt has a very clean and sharp look. I like my design and the ability to choose the colors just lets you match it with you gear. Thank you Hammock Gear.

  • Burrow 20 w/2 oz. over stuff

by Chet (Riverat on HammockForums) – 12th Dec 2016

Could not be more satisfied with the product and the service. The Burrow 20 shipped out on exactly the day I was told it would. I was very impressed with the quality of the item. Does not appear to be any shortcuts taken here. I used the Burrow 20 w/ 2 oz. overstuff on an overnighter in tandem with a "big box store" underquilt that i bought several months ago because I made an uneducated decision (Already ordered an Incubator 20 to replace it). The outside temp low was 31 degrees Fahrenheit and the high temp inside the Burrow 20 was 91 degrees, but it pretty much stayed around 88 constant. I had a lightweight Minus 33 wool base layer, a loose fitting pair of wool socks and wool watch cap. If your on the fence about spending the money for one of these, just do it. These are made for hammock campers by hammock campers and life is to short to be cold. Thank you to all the fine folks at Hammock Gear for providing a great product made in the U.S.A.,!

  • burrow 20

Very well made. I love the colors too!!! I can't wait to use it!!

  • light but superbly warm

    by Unknown – 30th Nov 2016

I have a sleeping bag that weighs 3 times this amount that isn't this warm! I'm 6 foot, broad shouldered guy and the regular size fit perfectly around my shoulders and feet. In combo with an underquilt there is nothing better. Highly recommend.

  • fast service great product

    by Phil – 24th Nov 2016

Ordered the burrow 20 during a sale. Received it within 2 weeks from the order. Took it out about a week after receiving it. First night it only got down to 50, then the weather took a turn for the worse the next morning woke up to snow on the ground upper 20's, I was so warm I didn't want to get out of the hammock. I also have a HG 20 top quilt that complements this underquilt, which is also a great product.

  • Kept me warm in some harsh conditions

    by john – 22nd Nov 2016

I used this with an incubator 20 and it kept me warm through a night in the mid twenties at 3500ft during a severe wind alert. There were wind gusts up to 60mph happening pretty frequently and I was doing alright in my down fortress.

    The build quality is superb!

  • Great Performance

    by P. Kelly – 15th Nov 2016

I used my new 20 F Burrow along with the 20 F Incubator this past weekend and was very impressed. I am a cold sleeper and was warm all night long. I wore a hat and long underwear with socks .On Friday night the lows got to 24 F and on Saturday night the low got to 25 F with the "feels like" temperatures on both night getting into the middle teens. With traditional sleeping bags I typically have to purchase an EN rating of at least 10 F below what I think the lowest temperature is going to be, but the Hammock Gear insulation was dead on. I highly recommend them.

  • perfect temps

    by David – 10th Nov 2016

I'm a ground dweller and sleep warm.

This is my first quilt and I was a little doubtful that it would keep we as warm as full zip, similarly rated, bag. I'm a "busy" sleeper and was also concerned I would toss out of my coverage.

After a month trekking in autumn at high elevation, I never had an issue with either.

My only suggestion (and I'm sure minimalist will disagree) - I wish it had a small pocket at the top. I've come accustomed to having a small stow for a headlamp, keys, whatever you might need in the night without fumbling around.

    by Hunt – 9th Nov 2016

So glad I was recommended this piece of gear by a friend. I'm 6 ft 2 in and got the wide and long version of the quilt. I probably could've fit a smaller size but wanted to be safe and go big or go home. I love this quilt and will continue to spread the word.

  • awesome!

    by Faison – 6th Nov 2016

Great quality and super lightweight. Thanks HG

  • Awesome

    by Bill – 2nd Nov 2016

Just ordered the Burrow 20 and it arrived in less than a week. I haven't had time to get it out in the woods since it just arrived, but we are planning to trips in the next few weeks. I did set my hammock up in the back yard and used my new incubator 20 under quilt and the burrow 20 top quilt for about an hour. Construction is top notch. I know I'm gonna love it.

  • Just amazing!

    by Andrew Benson – 28th Oct 2016

This is my second one. I've got a 40 with snaps and a 20 sewn footbox. I live in my 40, it's just amazing.
If you're in the verge, just do it. It's one of those things that you will have the rest of your life.
The craftsmanship and customer service is second to none.

  • they did it again

got my 20 degree burrow, and it is an awesome quilt , id swear its custom made just for me.

  • In a few words, please title your review

    by David Cader – 18th Oct 2016

I recently took this quilt on a six night backpacking trip in northern Ontario. Based on reviews I expected this quilt to deliver and I have to say that it met all of my high expectations. This is a great piece of gear.

I was expecting the weather to be around 5 degrees Celsius at night, but we had a warm spell and this quilt was almost too warm ... not often you wish for cold weather!

I am so happy that I no longer have to struggle into a mummy bag when using my hammock.

  • Awesome Craftsmanship and Very Conservatively Rated

    by Gottabyke – 10th Oct 2016

Quality and craftsmanship is second to none. Very conservatively rated. First night out was 28 degrees F and I was toasty warm. I would say that I could easily take this down to 0 degrees F or lower. Turnaround was about 2 weeks and customer service was excellent.

  • Better than expected on the TCT

    by Jay – 9th Oct 2016

Spent 4 days and 3 nights on the Teton Crest Trail in September. First night was in the 20s and this was my first experience using a quilt instead of my sleeping bag. Went to sleep with my down jacket on and woke up sweating. By the third night I was completely comfortable with my sleep system. Stayed nice and warm through the night and didn't even realize it was snowing all night. Woke up in upper Cascade Canyon under 5 inches of snow.

Would highly recommend this quilt to anyone looking to get the best value for your dollar. To top it all off, the service from the company is the best, quick answers to all my questions and very happy with the quality of the product.

    My setup:
Burrow 20 w/ 2oz overfill and Ground Pad attachment kit (highly recommend also)
    NeoAir xTherm Sleeping Pad

  • Couldn't be more pleased!

    by Michael Wells – 6th Oct 2016

First experience with a quilt (vs. a sleeping bag). First night in tent the temp unexpectedly dipped below freezing with a snowstorm (after a daytime high of over 100!). I was very comfortable while tent mates were struggling. I was slightly concerned about the quilt concept in advance but it works really well for me, giving much more freedom than a sleeping bag, an astonishing amount of warmth given the light weight and it doesn't slip off. I'm 6' 5" tall and was pleased to find the quilt long enough. The Hammock Gear Pillow seems less useful (too small, not enough cushioning) and I haven't yet figured out the Ground Pad Attachment Kit which I probably won't need.

  • Exactly as you would expect

    by Tom Pittman – 5th Oct 2016

This Quilt has performed exactly as expected, the build quality is good as well. I think that it would be hard to find a better light sleeping option for the price, unless you have skill in making your own gear.

  • A nearly perfect 20 degree bag

    by Jake Snider – 1st Oct 2016

I've spent probably 15 or so nights in this bag so far. Most of those nights were August in Alaska, and the last few in the upper peninsula of Michigan in late September. In the night-time temperature ranges of 40's-60's this bag has been warm enough. The versatility of being able to buckle it into a half bag or open it up all the way has made for comfortable sleeping in this range of temperatures. The build quality seems great. It seems tough enough that it will be durable if taken care of. All stitching seems solid and I haven't seen any leaking down. I ordered the extra long , extra wide with no taper and its basically like a huge comfortable comforter that still packs down small and very light. It's exactly what I wanted for my sleep system. I emailed customer service and asked if they could rush me an order in time for an Alaska trip. They got it to me in about 4 weeks in plenty of time for my trip. They were the only company willing to work with me on this and I appreciate that greatly. They seem like a quality company, I would highly recommend them.

  • My new favorite

    by Bruce Ferguson – 29th Sep 2016

I bought a Burrow 20 and an Incubator 20 for winter camping in the south and high altitude camping in the Rockies. I recently took a week-long training course that had us hiking the continental divide in Colorado. Temps in the high 20's most nights. Even on the night that it went to 19 I slept in socks pants and a thin shirt. I had to pull my arms out a few times because I was getting too warm. I think I slept warmer and more comfortably than anyone else, groundhog or hanger, in the whole group. We had a "circle stretch" one morning where you had to lead a stretch and tell your favorite piece of gear. I said " I have three because they make one system; my Warbonnet Blackbird, my Hammock Gear Burrow, and my Hammock gear Incubator"

  • Exactly what I wanted and more

    by Dave – 23rd Sep 2016

Great TQ. Ordered it the day they moved office locations. And then even changed my order slightly after placing it. HG guys were awesome, changed up my order mid stream, shipped it extremely fast, around 10 days, and had it arrive super fast. Great quilt. Will definitely order another one for other family members.

  • read the frequently asked questions

    by Unknown – 6th Sep 2016

Definitely a quality product. I ended up getting the extra long and wide version based on Hammock Gear's recommendations in the frequently asked questions section. I am definitely a quilt convert. I haven't had in cold temps yet but in 40 degrees I slept in it with just my breifs quite comfortably. I would definitely recommend the chord system they offer to help keep the quilt snug around you. I am an active sleeper and they made the difference for me. Plus I can see how in cold weather they would be invaluable.

  • Glad I pulled the trigger!

    by Ryan Vorisek – 4th Sep 2016

Finally pulled the trigger on a high quality sleep system, and love it. Paired this with a 0deg Incubator, and was toasty all night. I'm a fairly cold sleeper, so it was nice not waking up every couple hours to readjust because I was cold. Glad to support our cottage vendors!

  • In a few words, please title your review

    by JD – 4th Sep 2016

Super warm for its weight, packs down small. The Hammock Gear team did an impressive job building my order and getting to me in time for my trip to King's Canyon National Park. Fantastic company who I will be recommending to all my backpacking friends.

  • Made in the USA

    by Unknown – 2nd Sep 2016

It's great to buy a high quality product that is made local. Very light and warm. Doesn't get any better

  • Great workmanship and even better customer service!

    by Unknown – 25th Aug 2016

It hasn't been cold enough to try out my new winter quilt yet but throwing it on on the bed in the air conditioning feels amazing! The workmanship is truly great and inspires me with the confidence that this will be an important part of my fall and winter kit, in combination with my matching 0 incubator that will be here tomorrow! That being said, I am most impressed by the customer service at Hammock Gear. As a first year hammock camper it took me some time to figure out exactly what I needed. I emailed and changed my order twice and both changes were met with a "no problem, we want you to have the right quilt for your needs" . Now that is customer service! And now I have the right quilt for my needs!

  • my favorite

    by MRk Painter – 25th Aug 2016

I liked my Burrow (2 oz extra down) so much I got this one for my wife. My brother and a friend also bought this quilt on my recommendation. The only problem is the modified quilts take a while to deliver. Mine has survived 1700 miles on the PCT and several mountaineering trips and is still in great shape. I nap under it at home.

  • So much more room

    by Downhill n Quincy – 24th Aug 2016

First time to use a quilt. Always used a sleeping bag as a quilt in my Hennessy. With the 20 barrow there is more room and so much easier to maneuver around.
Costumer service is also 5 stars. I emailed questions/ concerns and I got quick replies with knowledgeable answers. Thank you Hammock Gear.

  • Compacts well. Very warm. Good price. Included stuff sack is awesome.

    by Stone Oliver – 18th Aug 2016

The quilt is sturdy, warm, fluffs well, compacts into the stuff bag well, and works nicely as a plain blanket if you get the snaps instead of the sewn footbox. I'm also amazed at how well waterproofed the stuff sack is. On an overnighter hike of the Twin Valley Trail, it poured constantly. I didn't have a pack liner and my bag got very wet on the inside but the quilt was dry as a bone. I highly recommend this product. It's also cheaper than comparable competition.

  • Favorite piece of gear

    by BP – 15th Aug 2016

I purchased a Burrow 20 about 2 years ago, so impressed with the quality and usability, especially with the snap footbox. I am a ground sleeper more than hammock, so it was a bit of a gamble to buy, but it was the right decision. I slept under the stars twice last weekend on my insulated Klymit pad at I was the perfect temp. It was in the high 30's both nights. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars, is that the down is migrating toward the edges and there seems to be no real solution.

    Response from Hammock Gear:
Hey BP! We're glad you like the gear. If you'd like us to check out the migration issue for you, please email me at sales@hammockgear.com

  • met all my expectations

    by Gonzo – 4th Aug 2016

Took these down to 30 degrees and I was toasty all night. I'm confident 20 or colder will be tolerable, maybe even comfortable. Gf got her under quilt with 2oz over stuff and said she had never been so warm while camping.

Our packs were so light that it felt weird, I had to throw in some coldies just to weigh my pack dow a little.

Worth the investment and much appreciated. Definitely recommend.

  • Puffy and warm

    by D Martin – 3rd Aug 2016

Tried my burrow 20 for the first time this week. It was warm and the down had tons of loft. Quality is top notch as always!

  • Exceeds Expectations

by Carter in WNC – 28th Jul 2016

I'm quite tall (6'6) and the long/regular width quilt is plenty roomy for me, especially in the hammock. I've been singing its praises since I first used it - super compact, warm, affordable, adaptable to a ton of uses with the snaps. Bonus points for a quick response from customer service and the product arriving ahead of schedule. Can't recommend the Burrow enough.

  • Burrow 20 topquilt

    by Lawrence – 27th Jul 2016

Have not used topquilt yet but I am impressed with the quality of sewing and material used.

  • awesome!!!

    by Mark. – 25th Jul 2016

This my first quilt and first down product since my cold weather mountain bag when I was in the Army. It always had feathers poking through and I looked like I had been fornicating with chickens when I got out of it (feathers all over me). The burrough 20 is fantastic and the customer service is great. The folks at Hammock Gear were very patient with me and understanding, even after I changed my order 3 times. No doubt one of the best companies in the business.
    Rock on and pack light.

  • great product. Plan to use it both as a top quilt for my hammock and as a top quilt for sleeping in a tent when your hammock is impractical. love this product.

  • The absolute best.

by Grant from Mississippi – 10th Jul 2016

This review comes after 2 years of field testing. First, the guys and girls at HG are incredible. Before ordering I called and spoke with someone about the product specs. He asked what kind of environment/climates I might be using it for and really cared about where and how I might be hanging. Second, the product I received was extremely well made. After using this top quilt in the field for 2 years (Maine, Indiana, all over New Mexico) in a variety of environments and climate conditions, I am very pleased! Can't go wrong with these hand-made top quilts!

  • I want this to replace my comforter at home!

    by Carlos – 5th Jul 2016

I had purchased the Incubator 20 for a new hammock setup replacing my tent/bag/pad combo I have been using for years. The Incubator kept me very warm and comfortable on a snow night/morning in the UP of Michigan early spring. I came back and picked up the Burro 20 and have used it twice so far, but I'm already digging the overall comfort, craftsmanship and space savings! Customer service was above and beyond, which I believe truly sets a company apart these days. Thanks Hammock Gear!!

  • Superior quality and value

I bought two 20 degree burrows, one to share, that has the snap footbox, and one for solo, with the sewn footbox. They accommodated my request to add 10 inche's to the width of the one with the snap foot box and still met my adventure deadline. The attention to detail, customer service, and quality of materials is unparalleled. I have had the incubator underquilt for years and love all of their products. They are lightweight, extremely warm, compressible , and durable.

Wow! what a thing of beauty, I love my new Burrow 20. This is the first time I have slept with out being to hot and clammy, I was comfortable all night because of the ventilation ability of this quilt. and what a bonus is it is so light and small when packed. Thank you for such a great product.

Just as other have stated before me, customer service is top priority for this company. Returning emails very quickly, and getting my order to me before my deadline.

My 12 year old and I spent 5 nights in the Great Smokey Mountains . We were able to shave a lots of weight by switching to burrows from sleeping bags ( we had your typical back yard bags that weigh more than baby elephant and are just as bulky) . We used a air pads for this trip, but I'm absolutely saving up for the under-quilts !

As it states in the care instructions one might notice a pungent odor while the burrow is damped or wet. Well in the Smokyes is rather humid and we did experienced the smell. However overall I am Happy Happy Happy with my purchase.

Thank you everyone in Hammock Gear !
