Hammock Gear makes some of the highest quality lightweight down top quilts for hammockers and ground dwellers available anywhere. We take pride in our materials, craftsmanship and customer service.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.
About the Burrow 40˚
The Burrow works for both hammockers and ground-dwellers alike. It is a lightweight sleeping quilt that takes the insulation of a traditional sleeping bag and puts it all on the top and sides, leaving the back (which insulation is compressed and unusable anyway) open. Many hammockers use top quilts in lieu of a traditional sleeping bag because they are easier to slide into when it's time to sleep. The Burrow is designed with a half taper, foot box and a cinched top. Comes complete with a stuff sack.
With premium quality, water resistant, 850 fill-power Hungarian goose down, the 40° Burrow is just the thing to keep you warm on the chilly summer nights.
Top Quilt Advantages
Having found the Hammock Gear website, chances are you are aware of some of the advantages of top quilts. Their growing popularity, with both the hammock crowd and ground dwellers alike, is due to their function and versatility, especially as compared to traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. Some of these advantages include:
|Fill Weight||6.6 oz||7.0 oz||7.4 oz||7.2 oz||7.7 oz||8.2 oz|
|Total Weight||12.86 oz||13.75 oz||14.94 oz||13.61 oz||14.58 oz||15.63 oz|
*Indicated lengths are for Snap closure Burrows when they are snapped and cinched closed. Burrows that are unsnapped and open are approximately 4" longer than above. Burrows with sewn footboxes are approximately the same length as shown. The standard model is designed to fit persons up to 6' tall.
We utilize the finest 850 fill power, water-resistant goose down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.
All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.
All of our quilts (except the Burrow 50) make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model. The Burrow 50, the lightest of our Top Quilts, uses sewn-through construction.
At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing a quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off.
Two options are available: Sewn footbox or Snap Footbox. The sewn option is a permanent footbox approximately 20 inches long, measured from the bottom. A sewn footbox is fully enclosed/fully insulated, and thus allows no cold spots. It is recommended for 0° - 20° temps. The Snap version allows the quilt to be fully opened and to lie flat. 5 snaps are used. It is recommended for temps above 20°. When closed the snap version, which has a drawcord closure, has an opening of approximately one inch. Some users, depending on conditions/temps, will use a clothing item or small piece of foam pad to plug this hole. Many HG customers enjoy using their quilts in the home, and love the versatility of using the quilt “blanket style” or as a “throw”, and the snap version fits the bill.
Select your choice of exterior color from our current stock. The color of the interior fabric is your choice of black or charcoal gray.
Our top quilts are built with a standard Half-Taper design. Custom work is available if you have different requirements.
Quilts come standard with attachment cord loops (these can be omitted by request).

I took my new burrow out to test it this last weekend. It got down to 20˚ with a wind-chill of 14˚ and I stayed nice and warm in my 40˚ burrow with a 20˚ incubator down to about 28˚. At that point I had to crawl out of my hammock to relieve myself and when I got back in I decided to use a cheap down throw as another layer. When I woke up the next morning it was the birds that woke me up, not the cold. I really think if I hadn't needed to use the restroom, I probably would have never added that extra layer. Even with that, it still got me down to 12˚ below the rated value, which is awesome. For reference, I was wearing a long-sleeve poly-spandex shirt, t-shirt and light fleece and long underwear with light zip-off pants.

It dipped to 35° on my last trip, didn't need to go for the thermals :)

Ordered the hammock on November 11 worried about wait time around the holidays. Quilt was on my door step 8 days later. Excellent turn around time.
Craftsmanship and fabric are top notch. Love the colors and the fact that it comes with a stuff sack as well as a cotton storage bag.
Wife is very happy with her birthday present and I'd have no reservations ordering from HG again.
by RickyBHangin – 22nd Nov 2016
Got the Burrow 40 plus 2 ounces a few weeks ago, and I'm very happy. I did a little "testing" in my backyard when it was just below 40 degrees and I can easily say I'll be toasty warm. This replaces my current 30 degree sleeping bag which weighed just under 3lbs. This is an amazing 1lb 2 ounces! Next on the list? The accompanying incubator 40! Thanks HG!!
by Christopher – 14th Nov 2016
This quilt is awesome. Very nicely put together and very warm. I've tested it down to 50 degrees with a HG 20degree underquilt and was toasty and warm, nearly sweating. HG definitely is conservative with their temp ratings. Would buy again, every time. I went with the snaps, because that allows me to open the end a bit to vent if it's warm. Packs down very small. HG includes a little stuff sac. Note that it's not a compression sac, so you can squish it into odd voids your gear wherever it fits. I went with the long/wide size since I'm a big guy and the quilt weighs 16.7oz on my scale. Totally worth it.

I ordered a Burrow 40 with 2oz overfill in Charcoal grey/moroccan blue. Service was amazing and Hammock Gear shipped the order in 2 days and I received the quilt 6 days later (i am o/s). The quilt is everything I expected and more. Sizing is accurate and the finish is excellent - I checked every seam. So far i have only used it for one overnighter but it kept me toasty warm at 45° as a ground sleeper. We are coming into warmer weather right now and I hope to use the quilt on some other trips in the next few months. I highly recommend Hammock Gear for purchases and will be recommending them to all my backpacking friends.

I can not express my pleasure in doing business with the folks at Hammockgear.com. I wrote a simple email asking for some advice and they responded quickly and went well above and beyond anything that I expected.
Hammockgear.com has earned a lifelong customer!!!

This TQ is the best quality I have seen. I also have one of the Under Quilts and it is great as well. This company's customer service is AMAZING! I will definitely be doing business again. If you are in the market for high-end hammocking gear, look no further. I did the research, let me save you the time. Just order from this company and you will be very pleased.
by Darin Kramer "Bansai" – 3rd Oct 2016
First off thanks to hammock gear for another amazing product. Amazing and speedy customer service (even thru their resent location move) thumbs up H.G.!!!!! Bought the 40degree burrow over the 20 because of my location, future hiking trip locations and that I will not be out hanging in the winter. T.Q. Came within 3 weeks of order placed. Which worked out great for testing purposes. The weekend it arrived it got down to the upper 30. ( I also got the 40 degree U.Q in this order) 38 degrees to be persise. With Med weight bottom underwear, and light weight 1/4 zip top underwear , wool beanie and socks i stayed nice and warm. I'm so excited to get out early spring next year to do so miles. And I know I will stay warm.

Great product just what I ordered vary well built

I had never used a quilt before, just a sleeping bag. Since I was backpacking in Romania, I needed something lightweight. Buying the Burro 40 was one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. The quilt was warm, almost weightless---just perfect. And the company was a pleasure to deal with. I needed my quilt in a hurry and they were able to accommodate me with size and delivery. This product is one of the best on the market. Thanks Hammock Gear and Harry Carlson for helping make my trek a huge success.

Seriously. How did they do it? How is it possible to make such a light piece of gear that keeps you so warm and cozy? Easy....magic! Totally convinced they have elves working in a corner of the shop whipping up magic down feathers from a sacred golden goose, and fabric woven from mysteriously colorful double rainbows. Its the only logical explanation. Its pretty obvious these quilts are manifested only for the coolest, most kickass people. The temp range for comfort seems to be very wide, and it packs down to about the size of a grapefruit in its last trimester. I think it actually cooked me breakfast and brought me my hiking boots one morning . I added 1 oz overfill, and an extra snap, and it was the right choice for my specific needs of saving the world, and mountaintop kung fu. The purple fabric is indeed quite groovy. Excellent craftsmanship, excellent customer service, excellent custom options....and elves. Possibly aliens. Throw your cash at these people now!
by Gary Park – 11th Jul 2016
The Burrow 40 is exactly what I was hoping for. Top quality (based on thorough inspection) throughout! I'm not a hammock user, but prefer an open quilt design for ground sleeping. The Burrow will serve me well for my upcoming Montana Beartooth trip and on return to Taiwan where I live. Just what I wanted!
by Travis....., – 8th Jul 2016
The craftsmanship is top notch. I appreciate the hard work and pride this small business puts into their product! It's a rarity to find this much anymore. I definitely will be doing more business with HG in the future!

After getting chilly using the lightweight sleeping bag I already owned, I decided that I wanted to add a top quilt to my hammock camping set up. I knew that I need look no further than Hammock Gear for a great product made by great people. I wanted something even lighter, packed smaller, and kept me warmer than what I was previously using. The Burrow 40 was the perfect fit!
In the early winter I purchased an under quilt from Hammock Gear, and could not have been happier with both the product and the service. I contacted Harry at HG and asked him a whole series of questions. He was extremely helpful and very generous with both his time and knowledge. Since I was pretty well set for my cold weather gear, I decided that the Burrow 40 should fit the bill nicely.
It was fluffy, comfortable, and exactly what I wanted to crawl under after hard days of packing through the woods. I was thrilled that it was much lighter, packed smaller, and slept warmer than the previous sleeping "Bag" I had been using. It was perfect. I couldn't have been happier with my purchase. I love everything about my new Burrow!
Hammock Gear, Harry, and all the rest... You guys are the best! Thank you so much for all of your help and I will definitely be back to buy more... I am a complete believer in your products!!!
by UtahJottoh – 28th Jun 2016
I own this Borrow 40 plus a Burrow 20. BOTH are uber-excellent in any way. They offer an extremely wide temperature range of use, terrific workmanship and compress amazingly small. Best of all they are beautiful...I suggest Cinnamon brown 100%!
by Jason Eden – 25th Jun 2016
My first quilt from HM was a burrow 20F. I used this bag for the JMT thru hike I did in 2015. It performed exceptionally. I was always warm, it dried very fast the one time it got a little damp, and it is very light. Since then I have purchased two complete sets of burrow and incubator 40F. The adjustments on the underquilt make it fit very nicely. It feels wider than other brands that I have owned which means I don't get cold spots when I move around because it is wide enough that I remain covered. I only use hammock gear for hammock and tent camping. You can't go wrong. Great stuff! Their customer service is great as well. I couldn't buy the last top quilt in time to allow for their current lead times and the date of my trip. I spoke with them and told them when I needed it by. Even though their lead times were 3+ weeks, they got it to me in a week. Pretty awesome! You don't get that kind of service every where.
by Gary – 22nd Jun 2016
I cannot speak highly enough about the functionality, quality, performance, and all-round beauty of these two quilts. I used to get excited about where I was going to backpack next, now I get excited about getting between these two slices of heaven no matter where I am. I tell people it's like being back in my mother's womb. Thanks for making fantastic quilts that exceed my expectations. And, thanks for allowing my backpacking season to increase to year-round :)
by Bobby – 20th Jun 2016
I love this quilt! I've used it for a total of about 6 nights in the back country so far and probably another 20 in hotels, and even at home.
The material seems pretty bomber, unlike my sierra designs dridown 0 degree bag which seems to have a new rip every time I use it. I sleep on the ground and therefor opted for the wide version, which provides excellent coverage.
If the temp is around 50-60, I'll start out with it in blanket mode. I usually wake up around 2 am a little chilly and end up fastening the buttons and drawcord, which is all that is needed to stay warm.
One more thing, the material seems to be resistant to staining. After a trip to the smokey mountains, I immediately left and went to the beach to stay with some friends. While at the beach, I got a bad ass hiker tattoo...well, I slept with my quilt one night and woke up to my quilt covered in ink, blood, plasma, Auquafor, and what ever else leaks out of a fresh tattoo, allover my quilt. I was able to completely wipe it off with a damp rag.
by Scott – 5th Jun 2016
I agree with everyone else, its great, just like I've come to expect. I asked for a few custom tweaks on this burrow 40 and just like the four underquilts and a custom cuben tarp it is perfect. Great craftsmanship and a wide variety of fabrics, warm below ratings. I can't say enough great things. Thanks!

I bought my GF and I the Incubator 20 under-quilts (which are showing more wear than I expected) and she bought us these top-quilts. Hers is still great. However, one of the snaps popped off mine the 4th time I used it. I have just lived with the minor annoyance ever since as it did not completely ruin the quilts effectiveness. It was just disappointing for as much as these cost.
My GF has been on my ever since to write a review and I am just now getting around to it. The overwhelming consensus seems to be that these are great, and I chose them due to the glowing reviews. So I think I was just unlucky but that is my experience. Your mileage may vary.
Hammock Gear response:
Good morning sir. We apologize for your poor experience with the Burrow. If you contact us at email@example.com we'd be happy to send you a prepaid return label to fix that snap up for you at no cost. We hope we can resolve your issue. Thanks, Harry Carlson - Production Supervisor
by Beer10t – 17th May 2016
Got to put the Burrow 40 through its paces this weekend. 3 day concert in which the temps fell below 30 at night. With a good layer of frost on the top quilt (no tarp deployed) I was toasty warm. The features of this quilt are so well thought up.
The quality of this quilt is just amazing. But it is the staff of Hammock Gear that is second to none. Prompt responses and crazy willingness to bend over backwards to help you out. Needed our quilts in a hurry. And after talking with Harry at HG, he was able to get our custom order out IN THE MAIL within 2 days!!!! This is unheard of at so many places. Thank you HG!! We will be referring you to so many people.

I was a skeptic at first because these things aren't cheap. I've switched from tents to hammocks a few years ago and it is a transition. I first purchased a KQ new river synthetic quilt for my hammock. It is a pretty nice quilt. It's reasonably priced and made well. It keeps you warm but doesn't compact well. It was honestly taking up too much of my bag space. I did a bunch of research and ended up going with Hammock Gear. These quilts are amazing. The workmanship is great. I went with the incubator 20 and the burrow 40. I love these things and have no regrets buying them. Makes my hammocking experience even better. I took these quilts down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit in my Warbonnet blackbird xlc and was toasty warm. I'm a Hammock Gear fan for life and highly recommend their products.
by Joe, Youngstown OH – 10th May 2016
Used my Burrow 40, + 2oz overfill top quilt for the first time this past weekend, 39deg low at Minster Creek PA, i was Very Warm, had to vent a bit, I'm sure with the over fill i'll be good to 30deg with it, and i'm a cold sleeper, Was also using it with my Burrow 40 under quilt, no over fill in it..
Also i went with the Wide Top quilt and glad i did, it wrapped around me really well, even tho my body size i would of been good with the Standard, i'm 5'9" 175, and a sort of side sleeper, So the Wide worked great for me, Only thing i also would of ordered Different i would of had an extra Snap added to it..

There are ample reviews here as to how absolutely well these products perform in their happy owners' many situations and varied weather conditions....
I want to let the interested reader know of the unparalleled quality of workmanship and outstanding customer service that I experienced with Hammock Gear and their products. Both my top and bottom quilt are artfully sewn, pretty to look at, compact down to nothing in my pack, and also keep this 'hanger' warm and toasty (28degrees & 50mph gusts).
And all my dealings with the staff were positive, accommodating, and professional. They fundamentally care that you are fully satisfied with their products. What a concept!
by Tony Robbins – 2nd May 2016
I have the burrow 0 and love it. The burrow 40 is just a great. I have used the burrow 40 down to 27 degrees and was warm enough to get a good nights sleep. Mine is not overstuffed and performed well below its rating so I imagine getting it overstuffed could make it comfortable down to close to 10 in a pinch.
by Tim M – 22nd Apr 2016
This is top notch gear! Super light compared to my sleeping bag. This will be perfect as my 3 season quilt.
by Rachel – 19th Apr 2016
They were ahead of time on shipping and its light as a feather :) thanks again, colors are true to pictures
by Todd S. – 13th Apr 2016
Received the quilt and can't say enough about the customer service and quality. I had an upcoming trip, and asked if I would be able to get the quilt in time. They made sure it happened and went above and beyond. Will be making future purchases with them as well!
by Mark Stanavage, Lancaster PA – 8th Apr 2016
When my Burrow 40 came, it seemed way too small (compressed) and light. I checked packing label to see if I received the wrong TQ. Called Harry at sales and he said that it was correct and that it is "disconcerting" . I tried it out in backyard. Super. Went on AT in Virginia. Snow, temperatures in 20's at night, wind advisories. Thermals, a turtleneck, second pair of socks made up the difference. Truly impressed. Love the snaps option. Could wear boots and still use while waiting for pickup. Snug as a bug. Thanks!
by Dave NC – 17th Mar 2016
The burrow 40 is my first top quilt. It is the standard standard with no overfill. It blows the green military sleep system bag away. The quality and warmth are outstanding.
by Kyle – 4th Mar 2016
I can see why so many people say great things about this company and product. I now have both the top quilt and under quilt and they are very comfortable and very well made. They compact down very small and are very light. I love both of them and very happy I made the purchase. 100% thumbs up!
by Rick – 29th Feb 2016
I had no idea how light and effective high quality down could be. I've had down quilts before for the home, but usually those are a much lower grade of down like 500 or lower fill plus feathers.
When I took this out I could hardly believe how light it was. The first night I tried it out it also was almost immediately warm. It's almost TOO light as it just seems like it wants to float away. I'm used to sleeping in my comfy bed with heavy comforters and blankets. This almost feels like nothing at all.
I will likely get a colder rated one for winter backpacking and would definitely get the sewn foot box for the colder quilt, but for the 40 degree Burrow I think the snap with the cord closure for the foot box is very sufficient.
Great product and a good price as well.
by M.C. Eli – 23rd Jan 2016
Awesome quilt. I had the foot box sewn, and it kept my feet warm down in the 30's. I sleep with my base layer and down coat on, and I was warm to about 30 degrees in this bag. I ordered the long version, and my wife got the regular; I would say hers would have worked for me at 6'2" if it were strictly a summer bag, I don't mind my head sticking out, and hers reached to the top of my shoulders. If you are going to stretch the temp rating, like I do, then I would suggest the longer version to get it up around your neck or ears. Awesome quality, and excellent customer service. Why pay another company twice as much for a heavier bag made in China?
by beaver15 – 22nd Jan 2016
such a cozy nest. Life is good in my hammock gear burrow..
by Erik Wells – 20th Jan 2016
I already had the underquilt 40, but just received the Burrow top quilt a week or so ago. The quality is excellent, as I expected from my experience with the underquilt. I like the snaps at the foot box so that it can be easily flattened out if I go to ground. For the conditions that I will likely find myself in camping, the 40 is perfect. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants a well made piece of equipment!
by coley(hombre) – 7th Jan 2016
Just hiked 3nights with temps getting down to hi 20s. Iam using a 20incubator with a 30 burrow.my hammock has a winter cover.at night I wear 2 pair socks with long undies , with jacket and toboggan. I had to put my jacket around my feet to keep warm. Overall I am well pleased.i do think I need more insulation in footbox.

Great craftsmanship and great customer service.

This is a great quilt. I talked with the guys at Hammack Gear before I purchased it, to make sure it would work in the conditions we camp. They gave me great advise on what to order. My first outing with it the temperature got down to 27 degrees, and I did not get cold. My quilt is rated for 30 degrees. I am happy with the purchase.
by JB – 30th Nov 2015
I ordered this to replace a four season modular military sleeping bag system and could not be happier. The materials and workmanship are top notch and it was received almost as soon as it was ordered. The quilt was very warm and packed well in an extra stuff sack on a recent hike. When compared to a recent overnight with the back country bed costing nearly twice as much, there is no comparison. Best sleep yet with the burrow 40.
by Henry Thomas – 29th Oct 2015
I now have 3 Hammock Gear top quilts and 3 Hammock Gear bottom quilts which cover the temperature range from 40 to 0 degrees. I hammock camp and ground dwell with my quilts and they always meet every expectation. A lot of ground dwellers are going to quilts and the is a significant weight saving. The workmanship is great and the quality is always there. I feel very confident to recommend Hammock Gear to anyone looking for, or considering down quilts.
by Sean ODowd – 11th Oct 2015
I thought I was gonna freeze. Most sleeping bags are rated to keep you alive...not comfy. The low was 41 degrees last night and we were on the AT. Everyone had a tent except me. I'm the black sheep with a point to prove. Out to prove the hammock is superior to ground dwellers. I ended up pushing this and my pheonix 40 to the brink...I stayed warm! I was still alive!
So the following is what I wore to bed:
Hiking pants (normal thin pair)
Light Columbia fleece
Thin knitted beanie. (Put on this morning while wearing breakfast)
Done.. No socks... No heated thermals.. I was warm...like could have tossed the fleece warm.. With wind chill it was in the low 30's.
by Alex Rera - Tío – 18th Sep 2015
I hiked over 2,000 miles on the PCT with my Burrow 40. I added 1oz of down fill to help stem off the colder parts of trail. It was plenty to get me through the snow pack in the high Sierra and the perking fall in the Northern Cascades. You can't beat the weight and the fabric is very comfortable against the skin, I still use my quilt even when i'm off trail. The service was very helpful and very quick, they shipped my quilt to me on trail as i needed. I am very happy.
by Resa – 18th Sep 2015
What a wonderful product you have. It is everything that I expected and more. The first night out the temps dropped into the 40's with 15 mph winds and I was just right. I got mine with 2 oz of overstuff and I have no doubt that it is going to work out for me. The temps here in the South don't get much lower then the 30's and I know this will be all I ever need. Thanks for the great craftsmanship. I am so happy that I got my Burrow!!

Being very happy and impressed with my previous purchase:
(20• full under quilt) from Hammock Gear, I called to get a summer weight Burrow and and a 40• under quilt. For an upcoming trip.
I placed the order on a Monday, and three days later it was on my porch, in time for my weekend trip.
Quality, attention to detail and helpful advice in abundance from your company.

I was honestly pretty skeptical when I got this because of how light it was, because of the shape, etc.
I had read quite a lot of good reviews so I bit the bullet on a Burrow 40 and Incubator 20 combo.
Last weekend, I headed to the top of Mt. Baden Powell with my hammock, the wind was blowing relentlessly, the temperature was above freezing, but likely not above low 40's.
Other than needing to learn how to attach it better, it worked flawlessly

I just got back from a week on the AT. Having the 40 degree burrow with me was a dream. It's so lightweight and so warm. Temps didn't get much below 60. So I really didn't need it. But having the security of knowing that if the temperatures fell, I would be prepared was invaluable.
I was pretty late to order this. But I called up and spoke to Harry and he rushed my order and had it to me with time to spare. Hammock gear is a great company and they make fine products. I already own a 0 degree burrow and 0 degree incubator. My latest order of the 40 degree burrow and 40 degree Phoenix complete my year round camping set up.
The quality of these quilts are top notch. They work great on my Warbonnet blackbird and grand trunk ultralight. Well worth the money.
by Ed – 27th Jul 2015
i purchased this for an upcoming fall thru-hike of 319 miles. I just had the opportunity to use it on an overnight this past weekend where lows were predicted to be mid-60's and the high's in the 90's. Much like most weather forecasts, the recorded low where I was camping was 44 degrees by morning but I got to give it to the weatherman, he got the highs correct. So basically at nightfall it was still in the 80's and I simply kept the quilt near me. By morning I was snuggled up and warm as can be. Awesome and fast delivery too!

I ordered the standard length, wide version of this quilt and it fits my portly 6' 280# frame well. This is my first top quilt as I have been using a sleeping bag for years. I have only had it out once since I received it and it never got out of the upper 70s so it spent the night off of me. The craftsmanship that went into this quilt is amazing. The stitching is perfect. I ordered the snap and drawstring footbox and it fits my size 13 feet very comfortably. I was surprised at how soft the material is. As soft as it is it is well made and I expect to get years of use of of it. Before I ordered the quilt I swapped emails with HG and all of questions were answered in depth and quickly. I highly recommend Hammock Gear and I am sure I will order from them again. Get yourself one.
by Chirpa – 3rd Jul 2015
My first purchase was a Phoenix 20 quilt, and I just love it, so much so that I bought another one, and two Burrows, one for me and another for the girlfriend. As always the stitching is top notch and the materials and colors are perfect. Couldn't recommend hammock gear stuff enough.

First off I want to say that Adam and Jenny`s service is unbelievable. Really top notch service. I ordered this quilt for my summer hike and I didn`t think I was going to get it in time, not only did I get this quilt but I also got my summer UQ in time for my hike too.. This is my second set of quilts i`ve gotten from them and honestly as a hammock camper, I would not go any place else. The product itself is top notch.. perfect stitching and it does what its advertised.. it keeps you warm.. i`ve actually taken this quilt down to about 35ish and I was still decently warm even though I didn`t get any overfill with it..

I bought this 40* TQ in order to extend my opportunities for using my hammock throughout the year. Previously, I was limited to use that could be called 2-season. I have not been at all disappointed.
This purchase was made at the same time that I ordered an 20* UQ, both with an over stuff of down. This past December of 2014, I went on a weekend trip that took the temps down to 15* and both quilts did not leave me at all wanting more warmth (I did sleep in my full clothing using wool baselayer, etc.). I would not have much concern for going to 10* under the same circumstances. Even during warmer outings into the low 70's or high 60's, I have not been disappointed.
My satisfaction with Adam's and Jenny's craftsmanship has only increased the likelihood that I will be asking for some expressly custom work in the very near future.

I've been camping with this quilt several times now in conditions ranging from 40-60 degrees. I got it with one oz. of overstuff because I'm a cold sleeper, and with a snap footbox to spread easier in warmer weather. I haven't been cold in this thing yet, and it's outrageously light. Awesome purchase.
by Unknown – 14th Jun 2015
Ordered the long version of the burrow with snaps and it's great. Very compact and light and love the versatility of the quilt. The long is nice even though I'm 5'9", it just gives that added comfort.

Quality in every way. Ordered two burrows for my wife n myself, couldn't be happier. Soft, warm, pack able, well made. Quickly shipped. Ordered last week in April, had enough second week in May in plenty of time for our first hammock trip. Hiked up Ledbetter on the Bertram trail up to cheoah bald n back down. Was around 40 maybe just under up top n the burrows kept us toasty. Only shorts n tee shirt for me. Shorts n a light jacket for my wife. Very comfortable, and warm. Big time hammock camping converts and the burrows def helped in the test trip

Love it! It's super light and compact. It kept me sweating all night. Temps got down to 52 that night. Recommend to anyone looking for a light weight option.

I've been using my sleeping bag for a couple of years as my "top quilt. When I received the Burrow 40 in the mail, I immediately regretted not having bought one sooner. Compared to a similarly rated sleeping bag, the size and weight of this is unbelievable. The stitching and general workmanship is excellent, and of course I received exactly what I ordered - modifications and all.
If you're on the fence about a good down quilt, I highly recommend you get one. You won't regret it.

Im not good at reviews so here goes nothing
I had my modified to a 30* TQ after a few phone call to Adam and Harry, couldn't be happier with the quality of the product and the customer service HG has it going on
I used the quilt around the house befor taking it on a three day trip the the Cranberry Wildernes it at home it both places
I would like to thank Adam and Harry you guys are the best and I really appreciate all you do for the military.
You guys are proof customer service isn't dead.
I'll be sending my friends your way

Decided to get a Burrow 40 for the warmer months after being so impressed with the Burrow 20. This time I decided to go with the snap footbox, and I'm glad I did. My first night in the topquilt the temp started out in the mid 50's. Just had the quilt sitting on top like a blanket, since I was hot when first getting in the hammock. Woke up cold and snapped things up and inserted a foam plug I made into the small footbox cinch hole. Once I cinched up the top around my neck, I stayed quite comfy the rest of the night. It was 45F when I woke up and I was only wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and socks. The quilt quality is superb, as expected. Very happy with my purchase decision - again.

I wish I had purchased this top quilt years ago, but it's never too late. I tried this 40 degree top quilt out the last two nights, at 35 and 40 degrees, along with my Hammock Gear Incubator Zero, to buffer my backside.
The ease to use this, as compared to improvising with a sleeping bag to drape over is incredibly different! With a sleeping bag, you have to pull and tug, tuck and adjust, and all through the night, you worry about cold spots because the sleeping bag fell off here or there. With the Hammock Gear Burrow 40, the confidence of getting a great, cozy, comfortably warm night sleep is assured with sticking your feet in the foot box and placing the top part over the neck. The rest of it just automatically nestles to your body. It gives you the freedom to easily turn onto your side, or move your legs without falling off, like the clumsy sleeping bag. I got an extra ounce of down in my snap quilt. I can't wait to do an actual field test, in the three areas of my love: backpacking, kayak camping, and bicycle camping. All three, I'm sure the weight of my gear, and volume will be reduced considerably! With that, if I can't find trees, I can put my pad down and just use the top quilt as a blanket! Which is only a great thing of versatility!
I'm hoping that I won't wait as long to get my zero degree Burrow. Hammock Gear! Quality, care, and good old home town reliability! I name drop this company to all my backpacking/camping buds. Thank you!

You'll no doubt read many glowing reviews about HG's products. They're well deserved. So much warmth for so little weight. Exceptional construction. True American quality and craftsmanship.
by Andrew – 6th Apr 2015
Burrow 40.... Easy with a few good lawyers had this down to a 33low with no cold spots. Spent a few years researching, reading everything I could find. I am no CEO so spending the money was not a quick decision. But the burrow is worth every penny! Highly suggest the snap foot box because the burrow 40 coveres a lot of temp ranges, and the snaps allow you to turn it into a simple blanket. Reluctant purchaser........ Amazing results, perfection needs no change, when this wears out I will order another no question
by Fred – 6th Apr 2015
I use this with my hammock and an underquilt. I got the snaps for the footbox and a 1 oz. overfill. My last hike had daytime temps in the lower 60’s and nights in the lower 40’s. I used it unsnapped for an afternoon nap and snapped it up for sleeping at night. The quilt is so light, it’s like sleeping in a cloud. With the snaps, it’s adjustable, depending on the temperature. One cool feature is the single snap at the top to keep the quilt centered over you upper torso at night. The build quality is great. It packs down into a small size and fluffs right up when you spread it out. Great product.

Let me start by saying the ordering process was easy. I picked out a top quilt from the Hammock Gear website, chose the colors I preferred and clicked "Buy". That easy! After 2-3 weeks my new top quilt arrived. After receiving my new Burrow 40 I immediately notice the fine craftsmanship, design and attention to detail. The stitching is perfect in every way.
I bought the Burrow 40 with snaps on the bottom in order to add some versatility to my purchase. At first I was afraid the snaps would pull the thin rip stop material apart, but so far so good.
I have used it in 45 degrees weather and was warm for most of the night. I got a little cool in the early hours of the morning, but not uncomfortable. So if you are cold natured you might want to have them add some more feathers.
I was so happy with this purchase that I ordered a bottom quilt from them as well. It is of the same excellent quality. Very well design and made. I am a happy backpacker!

I placed my order with a very tight deadline, but the Hammock Gear rep assured me that they would meet my requested deadline. Hammock Gear not only met my deadline by delivered my order a day earlier than expected. What a Company! However, the top quilt would have been worth the wait. I was so happy to throw the sleeping bag out and welcome the new top quilt. Super lightweight with plenty of warmth. I couldn't be happier. Hammock Gear has a customer for life in me...
by Kellan – 18th Mar 2015
I got 2oz of overfill in the footbox only (because I have cold feet). Love it, they did a great job.

Was in the market for a lighter weight alternative to my sleeping bag also have you ever tried getting in and out of a sleeping bag in a hammock, not the easiest task. I started researching quilts and after some pretty influential reviews by way of written and video reviews i decided on a handmade burrow 40. Plus through research i found out this fine piece of equipment was made in the same state as me so thats a definite plus. This quilt has thoroughly lived up to the great reviews I've read and am a true believer in this company and all their products. I will continue to use Hammock Gear for any future top quilts or under quilts.

If you are going to camp in your hammock you need the incubator and the burrow. I used the incubator the other day it was around 50 degrees nice and warm on the bottom. No cold back. Sleep like a baby. Was looking for something a little lighter and smaller than my Western Mountain bag and the Burrow 40 fits the bill. Great Quality packs very small and light. Taking it out this week should be high 30's in Sarasota, FL :)

Recently purchased a burrow 40. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I do not doubt it will keep me warm when I need it to. The build quality was excellent and it was shipped out to me in a timely manner. Great purchase!

I've ordered a Burrow 40°F last summer for my Camino de Santiago from Switzerland to Santiago de Compostela/Finisterre/Muxía (over 1,400 miles). I have been told that some of the albergues in Spain aren't heated in winter but didn't want to carry the weight of a sleeping bag, so I decided to buy a quilt instead. After my long walk I can say that most of the time the albergues have been heated indeed, but not all of them have been really warm and a few haven't been heated at all. The Burrow quilt has kept me warm from above in every condition I have met. Of course, when the mattress was rather cold, I felt a bit cold from beneath. Since I am just a bit over 6' tall and wanted (and still want) to use the quilt not only in hammocks, I have ordered the long and wide version. The size is just perfect for me. The only issue I found with the wide version is that the down tends to slip a bit from the center of the baffles to their sides over time, so you have to shake them back in place before going to bed. However, I have never been cold even in the coldest places I have encountered. I can definitely recommend the Burrow 40°F quilt and hope it will hold for years to come! :)

Awesome. I'm a Hammock Gear addict!
I use my burrow in my hammock, on the couch and in my bed.

Joining the choir for Adam, Jenny and their crew - just a wonderfully made top quilt. First its just a joy to deal with Hammock Gear! They are informative and quickly respond. This quilt is a long and wide yet remains very light. Length is up to you but highly recommend the wide as it eliminates cold spots when you roll around. Its comfortably warm. In the Southeast I just had to resist the urge to get a 20 or 0 degree bag. You could not sleep under it. This is perfect. The material is smooth-textured which is great. This smoothness allows you to slide around and allows you to slid the quilt around. Did I say get the "Wide" version? Get the "Wide" version. Snaps are nice solution and allow versatility. Thank You Hammock Gear!
by Daylan – 20th Nov 2014
I used this on a recent backpacking trip. It was well bellow the rated tempature and it still kept me amazingly warm.
by Tom – 13th Nov 2014
These things are amazing! I called Adam about adding 2 extra ounces of down to make a 30 degree Quilt, and he advised he would also adjust the width so as to allow for the extra loft. When it arrived and I took it out of the box I was astonished at how light and small when compressed it was and was worried it would not be warm enough. After holding it for just a few seconds, it warmed right up past what I could have expected. It felt almost like an electric blanket. My wife was sitting on the couch, pulled it around her shoulders and was equally impressed. I opted for the snap version, standard length and width (I'm 6-0 and 175) and it is perfect.
Much easier to get out of my hammock without dealing with a sleeping bag. The stitching , design, and workmanship is top quality .
The colors I chose (camo outside and olive green inside) look great. I could not be happier!!!!!! I also ordered the Incubator 40 in the same colors and specs and am equally impressed. Hammock Gear is the BEST!

I wanted a top quilt that I could use in the spring and fall. My concern was that a 40° burrow would be too warm. People say vent the top quilt by moving it off when it is too warm and bringing it back on you when it's too cold, but that can lead to waking up a lot in the humid south. I bought the 40° burrow (+1) with snaps and have used it from 70° -38°. I only to to vent 1x during the night at 70° which was great. At 38° I was toasty the entire time. The range of temps have been just what I hoped for. I think this will be my most useful piece of gear.
by dave – 12th Oct 2014
It is not field tested now. But it looks very good and it is build with care. All stitching is done perfect. Outer: Multicam, inner: brown, footbox with snaps.
The weight is just over 600gr because it is a 30F build long/wide quilt with 2oz overfill.
So far very pleased with it
by jcblough – 8th Oct 2014
I had a burrow custom made to a 30 degree quilt and it is fantastic. I have slept with it down into the 40's and up to the mid 60's and it stays comfortable. I really suggest the snaps on the foot box.
by Cruiser – 4th Sep 2014
If you have any questions about the quilts, don't hesitate to call and ask, I did and Adam took the time to take me through selecting exactly what I needed.
When the parcel came it so much smaller than I expected, made packing a lot easier, but I worried how can some that packs so tiny, actually keep me warm. In a word ... it is a marvel, Adams advice was right on the money, and I am literally a happy camper (and warm).
by Dochartaigh – 21st Aug 2014
I was a little skeptical when I first received this because it was so thin (even got it with 2 extra ounces of down). But the first time using it (even in my bedroom) I could tell how warm it was. I've only gone down to 46º so far, but I was toasty-warm.
With 2 extra ounces of down, built both long and wide, it weighs in at 17.2 ounces with the included stuff sack. That should be 15.2 ounces for a regular (no extra down) 79x55" long/wide version (neither of these weights were listed in the chart so hopefully this helps someone.
by Chris – 20th Aug 2014
I ordered the 40F with 2oz of overstuff. I've used it two weekends down in the 40's and my only regret was not getting a incubator under quilt! The quilt is incredible soft and warm and can't wait to get another!
by Your Name – 12th Aug 2014
Took the burrow 40 out the day after i recieved it, was just the ticket for a summers night. i will be using it again this weekend woohooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Unknown – 11th Aug 2014
Very tiny when at the bottom of your pack loose or compressed. Very lucky to have a sleeping bag so light and small! A dream to carry in my pack. I'll be sad when weathers dip much colder. When I told hammockgear I was leaving for a trip soon and asked if there was anyway I could get a quilt from them much sooner. They were very kind and had multiple options for bags I could have at my house in a short time frame. Thank you very much! I have well enjoyed this and will continue to do so on future trips of much larger magnitude.
by Fred Lorf – 10th Aug 2014
Ordered a 40F Burrow with snap foot, Wide-standard size, overstuffed with 2 oz of down. The quality is top notch, the Argon fabric feels amazing and the weight is 5 ounces lighter than my old 30F Burrow!
Love being able to use it flat in the warmer weather. I've never slept better in camp!
by Jim – 5th Aug 2014
This quilt arrived just in time for my annual Isle Royale backpacking trip. Over a week, early morning temperatures were usually around 51 - 53 degrees and unfortunately, I found myself feeling cold every single night. Apparently I'm a "cold sleeper". I finally ended up sleeping fully clothed which is something I normally don't do. The quilt is a lightweight, well made product, but apparently this one isn't the best choice for me.
by Kris – 5th Aug 2014
I have a couple of HG quilts and they are awesome. I thought the name "burrow was odd until the first time I used it, and then I understood. The quilt is so soft, fluffy and warm you just want to burrow down into it. Buy one, you won't regret it.
by Pat Combee from North Central WV – 10th Jul 2014
This is my 4th piece of downy stuff from HammockGear. I have never been disappointed.
I needed a summer TQ to fill in the gap in my quilts I have a 15 degree burrow (now called the 3-season, 20 degree) that is just too darn warm when the temps hit the mid-40's (and yes this is a compliment of the 15 degree quilt). Received the 40 degree burrow, with 1 oz of extra down, regular length, regular width, sewn-in footbox. It came in a timely manner, exactly as ordered and just in time for a weekend trip. I Have used it 3 nights. This quilt has plenty of loft. Nights were rather warm, but I do believe this quilt should take me very close to its rated 40 degrees. Workmanship is outstanding with much thought going into the design. Did I mention how light it is!? On my scales, in the included stuff sack it came in at 13 ounces. Very nice weight for this much quilt. Thank you HammockGear!
by Jax – 10th Jul 2014
This is my third down item from hammock gear. Over the past few years I have grown to love their products and this piece is no exception. I ordered my 40 degree wide and regular length. I expected it to weigh slightly more due to the extra width. Weight delivered was 15.15 ounces with stuff sack.
I live in Fl and hike a lot in GA. After two trips, the burrow has met all my expectations. Having the buttons to open it up on warmer nights was great this summer yet it kept me warm and toasty on a night that dropped down into the mid 40s.
by Jerry Bowman – 30th Jun 2014
Just back from a hiking trip with this quilt (the 40, with two ounces added down). The weather dipped to the low forties on a few nights.
Great product. I was warm down to the lowest temperatures I faced. I dressed normally (for me) on those nights--hat, shirt and socks included.
Initially, I was concerned about the quilt staying in place. The quilt is so light it feels like a puff of air will blow it away. Because of this, I placed my pad in the foot box, secured the quilt to the pad with the tie loops on the quilt, and snapped the quilt around my neck with the drawcord pulled. After the first few nights, i stopped all of these, except (on cold nights) snapping the quilt around my neck. These extra steps just were not needed, although it is nice to have the option for extra protection.
I recommend the long length and wide width, both of which help seal out any drafts. I also opted for the foot box created by snaps, rather than sewn in. This increases flexibility for warmer nights.
I actually bought another manufacturer's quilt (more expensive) and returned it immediately. This quilt is far better constructed. Highly recommended.

Received my new Burrow 40 / wide / +1oz just before departing on a multi-day trip on the GAP trail. Hammock-suitable trees were not guaranteed, so I used it as a TQ over a NeoAir mattress in a MSR Hubba. Temps got down to the mid-40s, and I was cozy and happy. This will be my go to TQ all summer, except for sweltering nights when I will use my Burrow 50. Thanks for the great service guys!
by Suede – 2nd Jun 2014
Got this top quilt a few weeks ago for the summer and fringe seasons. Had it out on a trip last weekend and loved it like all the other HG products I currently own - CF tarp, Incubator and a 20* burrow. I love the length of the short for me at 5'6" it is more than enough length and I get to save some weight. The workmanship is excellent, the argon camo is beautiful... It is WARM... I LOVE IT! Hammock Gear customer service sets a very high bar for themselves as well as their competition and I cannot say enough about Adam and Jen's commitment and execution, achieving the highest level of customer satisfaction with this customer.
by Marcelo Mora – 27th May 2014
I first got a 50 burrow and it did not meet my needs as I am a cold sleeper. Adam then nicely exchanged it for this burrow which I LOVE! Great craftsmanship, great quality , great weight ( 12 oz ) and the best price I can find around for something of this quality!
by John – 23rd May 2014
I love this quilt! Nice and soft and kept me toasty warm on two nights of 38*. An outstanding product and will bring me back to HG for future purchases!!
by Will (Savage) Fink – 21st May 2014
I love this quilt, wish I had ordered one long ago. Under 12 oz, and performs well beyond it's rating. Craftsmanship from Hammock Gear is top notch as always, and pricing very reasonable.
This TQ is ideal for hammocking, but I like the extra versatility built in. It works just as well on the ground, and you can even unsnap the foot box and turn it into a big blanket. It sheds water well, and I have no doubt it will be just as durable as the other HG quilts I have.
No winter I already plan to purchase a 0 degree burrow!
by Shaun Miller, Northern CA – 14th May 2014
First of all, not only is the product received great but Adam is also an amazing resource. Most companies don't have the owner on-call waiting to answer any questions you might have. He was very helpful in making sure I ordered exactly what I expected. I really appreciate his time in running through all my questions before making my purchase. His passion for the product really shows!
Secondly, the product itself: Wow! Excellent quality and customizable to exactly what you need. I received my custom 30* Burrow a while back and only just got to take it out into the high Sierras over this weekend... The quilts were planned as a three-season set. But, as luck would have it, we ran into a wicked cold front while at 8,400 feet. Hit by white-out snow conditions and having to set up camp quickly the DWR Argon fabric kept everything dry and the quality down lofted quickly! Used with my 2oz overstuffed 40* UQ from him I was comfortable to 22*. Yeah, I was wearing most of my layers but the quilts did more than their part in keeping me warm.
Thanks Adam! Field tested & passed with flying colors! :)
Give him a call, figure out exactly what you want and go ahead with your order! You won't regret it!

very high qaulity, well worth the money, true to the temp rating
by Simon – 17th Apr 2014
I have held off writing a review until I have had a chance to field test it. I have used this quilt for both hammock and ground camping. The quality of the Argon fabric is amaizing. It is very light and has a soft and luxurious feel. It feels great to the touch while being super-light (under 400g for the long +1oz). The workmanship is first-rate. The baffles and stitching are strong and the sewn-closed footbox that I have is well made and all can withstand a good amount of camping abuse. The down is great - the loft returns quickly after being jammed in a stuff sack all day. The cinch feature at the top is amazing. It closes in around your shoulders and can keep out cold draughts. The 40 degree burrow is 4 season worthy in Australia. This review would not be complete without thanking Adam for his help in explaining what would be the best choice for me in regards to taper and length. I'm very happy with my quilt and would recommend that if you are considering them rush out and buy one (or 3).
