Burrow 40

Hammock Gear Top Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Hammock Gear makes some of the highest quality lightweight down top quilts for hammockers and ground dwellers available anywhere. We take pride in our materials, craftsmanship and customer service.  For ground sleepers, we recommend ordering the wide width, as well as pairing your quilt with a ground pad attachment kit:  http://www.hammockgear.com/ground-pad-attachment-kit/

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Burrow 40˚

The Burrow works for both hammockers and ground-dwellers alike. It is a lightweight sleeping quilt that takes the insulation of a traditional sleeping bag and puts it all on the top and sides, leaving the back (which insulation is compressed and unusable anyway) open. Many hammockers use top quilts in lieu of a traditional sleeping bag because they are easier to slide into when it's time to sleep. The Burrow is designed with a half taper, vertical torso baffles, foot box and a cinched top. Comes complete with a stuff sack and storage bag.

With premium quality, water resistant, 850 fill-power goose down, the 40° Burrow is just the thing to keep you warm on the chilly summer nights.

Goose Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 4.5 liters, but due to the nature of goose down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Top Quilt Advantages

Having found the Hammock Gear website, chances are you are aware of some of the advantages of top quilts. Their growing popularity, with both the hammock crowd and ground dwellers alike, is due to their function and versatility, especially as compared to traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. Some of these advantages include:

  • ease of entry and exit
  • ease of movement once inside
  • ease of adjustment
  • no wasted insulation under the body
  • no undesired hood-on-the-face
  • no claustrophobia effect
  • weight savings
  • volume savings

Well, I did it. I slept on the ground. Yes, I said I slept on the ground. Used my new HammockGear 20º Custom Burrow on my Exped Downmat XP9. Neede to see if a TQ would really do the job. All Premium Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon (except for 67 taffet) which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. The weights in the table above assume Argon 67 material. Argon 90 adds approximately 0.75 oz to final weight, per shell. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.

All of our quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing a quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off.

Two options are available: Sewn footbox or Zipper Footbox. The sewn option is a permanent footbox approximately 20 inches long, measured from the bottom. A sewn footbox is fully enclosed/fully insulated, and thus allows no cold spots. It is recommended for 0° - 20° temps. The Zipper version allows the quilt to be fully opened and to lie flat. It is recommended for temps above 20°. When closed the zipper version, which has a drawcord closure, has an opening of approximately 1/2 inch. Some users, depending on conditions/temps, will use a clothing item or small piece of foam pad to plug this hole. Many HG customers enjoy using their quilts in the home, and love the versatility of using the quilt “blanket style” or as a “throw”, and the zipper version fits the bill.

Our top quilts are built with a standard Half-Taper design. Custom work is available if you have different requirements.

Cord Loops

Quilts come standard with attachment cord loops (these can be omitted by request).

  • Keeps me warm!

    by Kris – 5th Aug 2014

I have a couple of HG quilts and they are awesome. I thought the name "burrow was odd until the first time I used it, and then I understood. The quilt is so soft, fluffy and warm you just want to burrow down into it. Buy one, you won't regret it.

  • Burrow, 40 degrees of puffy warmth

by Pat Combee from North Central WV – 10th Jul 2014

This is my 4th piece of downy stuff from HammockGear. I have never been disappointed.
I needed a summer TQ to fill in the gap in my quilts I have a 15 degree burrow (now called the 3-season, 20 degree) that is just too darn warm when the temps hit the mid-40's (and yes this is a compliment of the 15 degree quilt). Received the 40 degree burrow, with 1 oz of extra down, regular length, regular width, sewn-in footbox. It came in a timely manner, exactly as ordered and just in time for a weekend trip. I Have used it 3 nights. This quilt has plenty of loft. Nights were rather warm, but I do believe this quilt should take me very close to its rated 40 degrees. Workmanship is outstanding with much thought going into the design. Did I mention how light it is!? On my scales, in the included stuff sack it came in at 13 ounces. Very nice weight for this much quilt. Thank you HammockGear!

  • burrow 40

    by Jax – 10th Jul 2014

This is my third down item from hammock gear. Over the past few years I have grown to love their products and this piece is no exception. I ordered my 40 degree wide and regular length. I expected it to weigh slightly more due to the extra width. Weight delivered was 15.15 ounces with stuff sack.

I live in Fl and hike a lot in GA. After two trips, the burrow has met all my expectations. Having the buttons to open it up on warmer nights was great this summer yet it kept me warm and toasty on a night that dropped down into the mid 40s.

  • Great quilt; true to ratings

    by Jerry Bowman – 30th Jun 2014

Just back from a hiking trip with this quilt (the 40, with two ounces added down). The weather dipped to the low forties on a few nights.

Great product. I was warm down to the lowest temperatures I faced. I dressed normally (for me) on those nights--hat, shirt and socks included.

Initially, I was concerned about the quilt staying in place. The quilt is so light it feels like a puff of air will blow it away. Because of this, I placed my pad in the foot box, secured the quilt to the pad with the tie loops on the quilt, and snapped the quilt around my neck with the drawcord pulled. After the first few nights, i stopped all of these, except (on cold nights) snapping the quilt around my neck. These extra steps just were not needed, although it is nice to have the option for extra protection.

I recommend the long length and wide width, both of which help seal out any drafts. I also opted for the foot box created by snaps, rather than sewn in. This increases flexibility for warmer nights.

I actually bought another manufacturer's quilt (more expensive) and returned it immediately. This quilt is far better constructed. Highly recommended.

  • New Burrow 40deg

    by Jim (Jsaults) – 12th Jun 2014

Received my new Burrow 40 / wide / +1oz just before departing on a multi-day trip on the GAP trail. Hammock-suitable trees were not guaranteed, so I used it as a TQ over a NeoAir mattress in a MSR Hubba. Temps got down to the mid-40s, and I was cozy and happy. This will be my go to TQ all summer, except for sweltering nights when I will use my Burrow 50. Thanks for the great service guys!

  • Burrow 40* short, 2 oz extra goodness = AWESOME

    by Suede – 2nd Jun 2014

Got this top quilt a few weeks ago for the summer and fringe seasons. Had it out on a trip last weekend and loved it like all the other HG products I currently own - CF tarp, Incubator and a 20* burrow. I love the length of the short for me at 5'6" it is more than enough length and I get to save some weight. The workmanship is excellent, the argon camo is beautiful... It is WARM... I LOVE IT! Hammock Gear customer service sets a very high bar for themselves as well as their competition and I cannot say enough about Adam and Jen's commitment and execution, achieving the highest level of customer satisfaction with this customer.

  • Very Happy customer for life!

    by Marcelo Mora – 27th May 2014

I first got a 50 burrow and it did not meet my needs as I am a cold sleeper. Adam then nicely exchanged it for this burrow which I LOVE! Great craftsmanship, great quality , great weight ( 12 oz ) and the best price I can find around for something of this quality!

  • Great TQ

    by John – 23rd May 2014

I love this quilt! Nice and soft and kept me toasty warm on two nights of 38*. An outstanding product and will bring me back to HG for future purchases!!

  • Don't know why I waited so long to order this!

by Will (Savage) Fink – 21st May 2014

I love this quilt, wish I had ordered one long ago. Under 12 oz, and performs well beyond it's rating. Craftsmanship from Hammock Gear is top notch as always, and pricing very reasonable.

This TQ is ideal for hammocking, but I like the extra versatility built in. It works just as well on the ground, and you can even unsnap the foot box and turn it into a big blanket. It sheds water well, and I have no doubt it will be just as durable as the other HG quilts I have.

No winter I already plan to purchase a 0 degree burrow!

  • Beautiful Piece of Gear!

by Shaun Miller, Northern CA – 14th May 2014

First of all, not only is the product received great but Adam is also an amazing resource. Most companies don't have the owner on-call waiting to answer any questions you might have. He was very helpful in making sure I ordered exactly what I expected. I really appreciate his time in running through all my questions before making my purchase. His passion for the product really shows!

Secondly, the product itself: Wow! Excellent quality and customizable to exactly what you need. I received my custom 30* Burrow a while back and only just got to take it out into the high Sierras over this weekend... The quilts were planned as a three-season set. But, as luck would have it, we ran into a wicked cold front while at 8,400 feet. Hit by white-out snow conditions and having to set up camp quickly the DWR Argon fabric kept everything dry and the quality down lofted quickly! Used with my 2oz overstuffed 40* UQ from him I was comfortable to 22*. Yeah, I was wearing most of my layers but the quilts did more than their part in keeping me warm.

Thanks Adam! Field tested & passed with flying colors! :)

Give him a call, figure out exactly what you want and go ahead with your order! You won't regret it!

  • fluffy

    by liam sweeney – 13th May 2014

very high qaulity, well worth the money, true to the temp rating

  • Field tested perfection

    by Simon – 17th Apr 2014

I have held off writing a review until I have had a chance to field test it. I have used this quilt for both hammock and ground camping. The quality of the Argon fabric is amaizing. It is very light and has a soft and luxurious feel. It feels great to the touch while being super-light (under 400g for the long +1oz). The workmanship is first-rate. The baffles and stitching are strong and the sewn-closed footbox that I have is well made and all can withstand a good amount of camping abuse. The down is great - the loft returns quickly after being jammed in a stuff sack all day. The cinch feature at the top is amazing. It closes in around your shoulders and can keep out cold draughts. The 40 degree burrow is 4 season worthy in Australia. This review would not be complete without thanking Adam for his help in explaining what would be the best choice for me in regards to taper and length. I'm very happy with my quilt and would recommend that if you are considering them rush out and buy one (or 3).

  • Conservatively Rated, well made

    by Graeme – 7th Mar 2014

Light, warm, comfortable. It was wonderful to get one made to my size (I'm very tall), and it comes up right past my neck and tucks under my pad so my arms don't get cold when sleeping on my stomach.

I haven't had an opportunity to field test, but I can't wait to get a chance.

  • hands down best quilt makers.

    by Unknown – 25th Feb 2014

I order this quilt for a light weight 3 season quilt. I have order a 40 with 2 oz overstuff and I've been warm to about 25-30 I am cold sleeper. I plan on ordering many more, I'm hooked on hammock gear!!!!

  • Fine and Fluffy

    by TheStinkyWeasel – 18th Feb 2014

My other HG products were amazing, and for cold nights in the desert this 40 (with 1 ounce extra) will be more than perfect. Can't say enough about HG products

  • light weight and slightly warmer than rating

    by matt – 1st Nov 2013

Decent quality and very nice stitching. The quilt seems to be made of high quality materials and as result is incredibly warm and light weight. I sleep cold and was able to take this down to 32f with absolute warmth.

  • Nice quilt

    by Kevin Okeefe – 9th Aug 2013

Service was first rate very fast shipping. The quilt quality seems to be great. The only reason I give
It 4 stars is the stuff sack its a little small and the drawl string is a little on the cheese side. Over all
Great product and I will buy from them again.

  • this thing is on my bed at home now. :)

    by eros – 29th Jul 2013

    So light. So comfortable.
My other favorite blankets have been pushed aside.

    It's perfection. Nothing more.

I love being able to flatten it out and enjoy in Palm Springs. Or snap up the foot box and be cozy on freakin cold nights.

    Thanks Hammock Gear!
And way to go on the EPIC customer service.
FYI. you shipped it on Monday from the East Coast and somehow it arrived here in LA on Wednesday!!!
Two days before my departure. Thanks so much!!!

  • Wish I could rate it higher than 5 starts because it is truly better than the best

    by Clarence Specht – 27th Jun 2013

It is supper light and very soft. I got the short wide with 2 extra
Oz of down. I was skeptical that soothing so light could be so warm.
But seconds after getting into it I had a light sweat going (it was 62!)
I opened the foot box and it was perfect.

The best thing though is the Customer service . It is second to non in any industry Adam is always polite and patient when you talk to him the phone he will take all the time you need to ask questions with out rushing you off. He will talk you through all your concerns and insure you get the best product for you even if it means making less money for him.
Hammock Gear has a customer for life..

  • Perfect summer top quilt!

    by James Harris – 20th Jun 2013

I bought the Burrow 40 for summer trips in the Southern Appalachians. I also have the Burrow 0 and the Burrow 20. I recently returned from a 3-night trip where the nights were down to 50 and was very comfortable. I love this quilt! It may actually be lighter than air. One can barely feel it when it is draped over you. The quality of all of my HG quilts are outstanding!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by Joseph – 14th Jun 2013

this quilt is absolutely amazing that is all you need to know. this is a must have if you are a serious hanger!!

  • 40F Burrow, Reg Length, Wide, Snap foot, Reg Taper, zero overfill

by Don Milligan Phx AZ – 31st May 2013

Order process very smooth, communication great, from time of order to receiving my burrow was much faster than expected.
I have used the quilt one time and it slept very comfortable for a 40F quilt in 35F temps was pushing it but I was very comfortable wearing a base layer with sleeping socks.
At the time of order I forgot to mention that I would be using it on the ground and would need sleeping pad loops, after emailing Hammock Gear the were very happy to add the loops at no charge.
Material and workmanship are excellent and I look forward to purchasing my next quilt from them.
