Burrow Econ 0

Hammock Gear Econ Top Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Burrow Econ series utilizes durable 1.1 oz / yd² Calendared Nylon Taffeta fabric and 800 fill power DWR (Durable Water Resistant) Duck Down to achieve impeccable loft and weather resistance, while still remaining light and packable.  A great top quilt for hammock campers and ground sleepers alike, the Burrow Econ series will keep you warm while not breaking your bank account.

Current Lead Times

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

About the Burrow Econ 0°

The Burrow Econ top quilt works well for ground sleepers (make sure you order the wide width) and hammock sleepers alike.  With a comfort rating of 0° you can rest assured that when those temperatures plummet, you will remain toasty warm.  Our top quilts feature a half taper design and vertical torso baffles, which helps to make sure you have proper side coverage to your hips, while also saving a little bit of weight due to the tapered footbox.  We have two options for foot boxes, zipper and sewn.  The zipper footbox is more versatile, allowing you to unzip and lay the quilt out flat.  The sewn footbox should be utilized if you only camp in cold weather, and don’t need to vent the top quilt.  Each top quilt comes standard with grosgrain loops along the sides of the quilt to allow ease of attaching our Ground Pad Attachment Kit, which comes in handy if you sleep on an insulated pad.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression / Pack Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 8.5 liters in volume, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours, and should be stored in the provided cotton storage bag, when not in use.

Top Quilt Advantages

Having found the Hammock Gear website, chances are you are aware of some of the advantages of top quilts. Their growing popularity, with both the hammock crowd and ground dwellers alike, is due to their function and versatility, especially as compared to traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. Some of these advantages include:

  • ease of entry and exit

  • ease of movement once inside

  • ease of adjustment

  • no wasted insulation under the body

  • no undesired hood-on-the-face

  • no claustrophobia effect

  • weight savings

  • volume savings

Top Quilt Versus Sleeping Bag on Ground (11:52)
Well, I did it. I slept on the ground. Yes, I said I slept on the ground. Used my new HammockGear 20º Custom Burrow on my Exped Downmat XP9. Neede to see if a TQ would really do the job. Burrows with sewn footboxes are approximately the same length as shown. The standard model is designed to fit persons up to 6'1" tall.

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant duck down on the market in our Econ Quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory and is RDS Certified.

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

All of our quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing a quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off.

Two options are available: Sewn footbox or Zipper Footbox. The sewn option is a permanent footbox approximately 20 inches long, measured from the bottom. A sewn footbox is fully enclosed/fully insulated, and thus allows no cold spots. It is recommended for 0° - 20° temps. The Zipper version allows the quilt to be fully opened and to lie flat. It is recommended for temps above 20°. When closed the zipper version, which has a drawcord closure, has an opening of approximately 1/2 inch. Some users, depending on conditions/temps, will use a clothing item or small piece of foam pad to plug this hole. Many HG customers enjoy using their quilts in the home, and love the versatility of using the quilt “blanket style” or as a “throw”, and the zipper version fits the bill.

Our top quilts are built with a standard Half-Taper design.

Cord Loops

Quilts come standard with attachment cord loops (these can be omitted by request).

    Keeps me warm

  • Glad i ditched the bag!

    by Joel – 11th Jul 2018

This is a quality product for the price. I was very worried that i would not like a quilt because i have used sleeping bags my whole life. i have been on 4 trips since receiving this bag two weeks ago and I could not be happier with the quality and comfort of this product. i find i get a much better night sleep and it is much easier to regulate temps throughout the night. beyond stoked!!

  • Great Product!

    by Michael R. – 26th May 2018

I got the 0-degree Econ bag with snap footing. I can only recommend the snap footing since you can convert it into a blanket whenever it's not too cold. It's very floofy but can be compressed into a smaller space.

  • Really light

    by Unknown – 17th May 2018

Waz worried since I went with 0 degree overstuffed to max would be heavy for hiking. Its still what O think is light when warmth matters to you. I loved they changed foot box one direction and rest of another. It can with a nice thick cotton I think bag to store when I cant hang it out in open.

  • love my burrow!

    by Karen Miller – 7th Apr 2018

I love my new Econ borrow 0 degree and have put it to the test. I was worried about warmth due to being a cold sleeper but have used it down to freezing and stayed toasty warm. I would suggest if you are interested to get the sewn foot box. I got the snaps and even though I’m a fairly calm sleeper, I cannot keep the snaps together. I also got the pillow and was surprised to see it came with a cord to attach to the hammock. This is a great feature because I tend to lose my pillow getting in and out. My hammock Gear products are all great quality. (I already own their underquilt)

  • Comfortable Warmth at ECON Price

    by Gregori – 11th Nov 2017

New to hammock camping. My ECON zero was a pleasant surprise! Easy to fit/tune, and so much warmer than my synthetic starter quilts. HG delivered for a group Hang and I could not be happier with the results....

    Thanks HG!!

  • So warm!

    by Alexa – 3rd Oct 2017

I used this for a weekend in the Adirondacks in 30 degree overnight conditions and it was perfectly warm! I'm a cold sleeper, but I stayed borderline hot up until about 6am which is way better than normal for me. I'm always freezing but this thing is amazing. By far the best sleep I've gotten in that kind of weather. I paired this with my 20 degree HG underquilt.

I purchased this item to be equipped within my budget without sacrificing quality-I am not disappointed by any means.

  • Very comfy, warm, and ventilated!

    by Unknown – 28th Jun 2017

Ive been using my Econ 0 snaps quilt for the past couple weeks while living in my car in the Eastern Sierras... I bought the Long/Wide 0 just to be covered for all different types of conditions. I'm 5'11" and it's perfect. It's only been 30-45* here at night but The Econ 0 stays perfectly warm and never gets too hot or if the sun is on me then I just stick out a leg to cool off. I can't wait to test this thing on in zero degree temps. I love my Hammock Gear quilt!

  • Love it!

Much of my comments regarding the Incubator apply to the Burrow as well:

When the Econ versions of the Incubator and Burrow were released, I picked up a set without hesitation. I already own an original set purchased almost a year ago, and they perform every bit as well as advertised. An additional set for my wife has been planned for this year, and the cost savings of the Econ line without compromising quality of materials or craftsmanship, made the decision easy!

Because I live in Alaska and can't afford a whole range of quilts, I chose 0* quilts. So far, I've used them in temperatures ranging from about 15 to 60* and slept very comfortably. It's easy to vent excess heat in warmer temps, or bundle up in them when it gets cold.

Being relatively new to hammock camping, I was hesitant to purchase a top quilt when I already owned several high quality expensive sleeping bags. I have no regrets after using these and experiencing how much better they work in a hammock without all the extra material of a sleeping bag. I chose Burrows with sewn foot boxes to maximize warmth. Once you commit to hammock camping, this should be on your short list!

Everything I've purchased from Hammock Gear has been top quality and deserving of the high reputation these guys have in the hammock community.
