Burrow Econ 40

Hammock Gear Econ Top Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Burrow Econ series utilizes durable 1.1 oz / yd² Calendered Nylon Taffeta fabric and 800 fill power DWR (Durable Water Resistant) Duck Down to achieve impeccable loft and weather resistance, while still remaining light and packable.  A great top quilt for hammock campers and ground sleepers alike, the Burrow Econ series will keep you warm while not breaking your bank account.

Current Lead Times

At the moment our lead time is approximately 5-6 weeks, from your purchase date, to ship out new made to order quilts.  Please plan accordingly, or visit our In Stock Page should you need something sooner.

About the Burrow Econ 40°

The Burrow Econ top quilt works well for ground sleepers (make sure you order the wide width) and hammock sleepers alike.  With a comfort rating of 40° you can rest assured that when those temperatures plummet, you will remain toasty warm.  Our top quilts feature a half taper design, which helps to make sure you have proper side coverage to your hips, while also saving a little bit of weight due to the tapered footbox.  We have two options for foot boxes, snap and sewn.  The snap footbox is more versatile, allowing you to unsnap and lay the quilt out flat.  The sewn footbox should be utilized if you only camp in cold weather, and don’t need to vent the top quilt.  Each top quilt comes standard with grosgrain loops along the sides of the quilt to allow ease of attaching our Ground Pad Attachment Kit, which comes in handy if you sleep on an insulated pad.

Compression / Pack Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 4.5 liters in volume, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours, and should be stored in the provided cotton storage bag, when not in use.

Top Quilt Advantages

Having found the Hammock Gear website, chances are you are aware of some of the advantages of top quilts. Their growing popularity, with both the hammock crowd and ground dwellers alike, is due to their function and versatility, especially as compared to traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. Some of these advantages include:

  • ease of entry and exit

  • ease of movement once inside

  • ease of adjustment

  • no wasted insulation under the body

  • no undesired hood-on-the-face

  • no zipper issues

  • no claustrophobia effect

  • weight savings

  • volume savings

Burrows with sewn footboxes are approximately the same length as shown. The standard model is designed to fit persons up to 6' tall.

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant duck down on the market in our Econ Quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

All of our quilts (except the Burrow 50) make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model. The Burrow 50, the lightest of our Top Quilts, uses sewn-through construction.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing a quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off.

Two options are available: Sewn footbox or Snap Footbox. The sewn option is a permanent footbox approximately 20 inches long, measured from the bottom. A sewn footbox is fully enclosed/fully insulated, and thus allows no cold spots. It is recommended for 0° - 20° temps. The Snap version allows the quilt to be fully opened and to lie flat. 5 snaps are used. It is recommended for temps above 20°. When closed the snap version, which has a drawcord closure, has an opening of approximately one inch. Some users, depending on conditions/temps, will use a clothing item or small piece of foam pad to plug this hole. Many HG customers enjoy using their quilts in the home, and love the versatility of using the quilt “blanket style” or as a “throw”, and the snap version fits the bill.

Select your choice of exterior color from our current stock. The color of the interior fabric is limited to Black Ion.

Our top quilts are built with a standard Half-Taper design.

Cord Loops

Quilts come standard with attachment cord loops (these can be omitted by request).

  • Loved it!

    by Bill – 11th Jan 2018

I picked up a 40 degree Econ Burrow at Trail Days in Damascus, VA last summer as a warm-weather quilt for tent-camping on an AT thru-hike.

Used it every night for the next three months and really really loved it. It was light, packed down small, and was the perfect amount of insulation for cool summer nights. I was sad when I reached New Hampshire and had to swap it out for my winter bag again.

Would definitely recommend this as a light and economical option for summer tent-camping. If I ever buy another quilt, I'll be sure to look at Hammock Gear first.

  • 100% Happy Once Again

    by Jeff Gandee – 19th Dec 2017

I just received my Burrow Econ 40, and wow, am I impressed. Can't wait to try it out in the wild but in the meantime...the other night my wife came in the living room to find me laying on the couch covered up in it. She just shook her head and walked away but hey, I was warm and comfortable, so I didn't care. Made very well, made a week ahead of the projected schedule, and made in Ohio. What's not to love? Thanks, HG!

  • Loved it so much I bought another for my wife!

    by Unknown – 4th Dec 2017

I went camping over the thanksgiving holiday for a few nights. The lows were in the low 30s and I stayed toasty warm every night in my tent with my burrow econ 40, a zlight pad, wool socks and long johns. Great product with amazing craftsmanship. I loved it so much I bought a 30 degree burrow for my wife.

  • Everything I expected it to be

    by DirtyWonderer – 21st Nov 2017

I bought the Econ Burrow 40 to replace my old synthetic 20 degree sleeping bag (I am a ground sleeper). I wanted to go lighter and smaller when backpacking and have a bag that I would switch out between 3 season and winter use. I used this bag on a 14 day backpacking trip in the desert and it held up to my expectations. The night time low temperatures during the trip ranged from 52-37 degrees F and I slept in nothing but underwear unless I became cold at night. One night was a low of 42 and I was not warm enough to sleep comfortably until I put on additional layers. Two other nights dipped below 40 degrees and I had to put on additional clothing to stay warm as well. So it seems the 40 degree rating is pretty accurate for this quilt. As a disclaimer, I tend to sleep warm except for my feet and I was using a sleeping pad with an R value of 3.2.

I am 6ft, 170 lbs and ordered the long and wide version and am very happy I did. I haven't had any issues with the sides of the quilt venting as there is enough material on both sides of me to seal out the cold air. The quilt is just long enough (with the foot box cinched and snapped) that I can tuck it under my chin. I tend to roll around often at night and I love how non-constricting this quilt is. I will definitely be looking into getting a quilt from HG for my winter sleeping gear. The quality of the quilt is high end and I am very pleased with my purchase.

  • 2nd Hammock Gear Quilt

    by Steve G. – 10th Oct 2017

We've got two of these quilts now. This 40 degree quilt works for exactly what's it's designed for, sleeping in a hammock in 40 degrees or warmer weather. And, I love it for that purpose. This weekend I took camping where it was in the low 30's next to a cold river, we slept in a tent. And, I was cold, shivering cold until I put on all my clothes, hat and jacket. I didn't plan well... We have two of these quilts for a reason, they're great. If you camp in colder weather, get a colder rated quilt. I will likely be purchasing a zero degree wide quilt soon if I can get one with vertical baffles because I am so impressed with this quilt. Oh, and they pack small, really small. Amazing product.

  • great comfy quilt

    by boxcar – 27th Sep 2017

Used thus econ 40 burrow quilt on my recent BMT thru hike and have to say I am very happy with it .
It was very comfortable and perfect for this trip .
I own three burrow quilts from HG and all of them are very well made products.
I was hesitant about ordering an econ quilt out of fear it might not hold up to A more high priced quilt and am glad I made the decision to order it .
What a great quilt from a great company .

  • Meets the bar

    by Steve Sylvester – 20th Sep 2017

I have a hammockgear underquilt that I've used for probably 50 nights. It's fabulous. Light, warm, just perfect. Because of my experience with the underquilt I ordered a top quilt to serve double duty. First, I will finally retire my 30+ year old Marmot down bag to use it in my hammock. The Econ 40 will just be more practical, especially as I ordered a wide. Second, I will be using the Econ 40 in place of my sleeping bag in my Hilleberg Enan. I am preparing for a Minnesota to Santa Fe to Yellowstone to Minnesota bike tour in summer 2019 with a friend. Packability and weight will be at a premium, so the Econ 40 will make perfect sense. I have not yet used my Econ 40, but I've given it the visual once over, and it's every bit a match for my udnerquilt that has served me so well for the past five years.

  • Econ 40 set

    by John N.( Kicknback) – 10th Sep 2017

I just received my 40 degree econ quilt set and I am totally impressed. This is my second set of quilts from Hammock Gear and most likely not the last! Great craftsmanship in these quilts, and good selection of colors to choose from. Most likely I will never go back to a common sleeping bag again.

  • top quality at a great price!

    by Unknown – 9th Sep 2017

I purchased this Econ 40 top quilt after I received my Econ 40 uq and I was so impressed with the quality. I bought the uq in stock (dark olive and black) it arrived in days. I love the color. So I went back to order the tq and it was out of stock:(. So I ordered it in dark olive and charcoal gray. It took the 3-4 weeks as stated. I would definitely recommend ordering it while in stock because they could be out tomorrow. It is definitely warm. Sleeping in the mid 60's this set was to warm till I vented the bottom. I like the snap footbox for venting. I'm sure this set of quilts will work for me down to low 40's no problem. The two Econ 40's fit in a 8 ltr compression sack from granite gear. This is a great product and I can't say enough good stuff about it.

  • awesome

    by Janina – 28th Aug 2017

the colour is beautiful, it's very lightweight and comfortable!

  • sweet product great value

    by Wes S. – 16th Aug 2017

I got this for a lighter setup and less space much smaller than my 20 degree bag. Yes it's only rated 40 which most of my use should be there or above. The lighter weight and small size are great. It's very warm but just received it and only tested inside with A/C blowing. It was too warm only used like a blanket. I tested it with footbox and wrapped around but would need to be near the 40 degrees for that one. I plan to use this in bikepacking and in my emergency 50 litter bag.

  • Great.

    by Unknown – 14th Aug 2017

    Very comfy and warm

  • love it!

    by Unknown – 8th Aug 2017

Got the Econo Burrow 40° with the snap collar, foot box with a shock cord drawstring on the end of the foot box. Absolutely love it. Have not been able to take it out on a over night yet but has kept me from getting hypothermia in the apartment with the AC set at 60 and the hurricane force winds from every fan going because of my wife. Give this Burrow two thumbs up!

  • Better than most bags double the price

    by Dave – 3rd Aug 2017

This Econo line quilt is just as good as bags costing double or triple its price. Excellent quality, well built and good features. So comfy. the 40 degree rating is modest IMO, easily good to mid 30's. Well worth the time to consider this quilt over everything else out there.

  • Amazing value!

    by Joey – 20th Jul 2017

I was slightly hesitant to go with the econ quilt, mostly because I've been striving to go ultralight, but I couldn't pass up such a good deal. Being 6'2" I waffled back and forth between the long or standard length as well but ended up going for standard and I'm glad I did. With my feet all the way at the bottom I can still tuck a little bit of the quilt up and over my shoulders for a perfect fit!

  • great deal!

    by Jacob – 13th Jul 2017

The quilt is very good, and it's extremely light, even lighter than one might imagine. I thought that the stuff sack it came with was too large, however. It could probably be compressed way more than it is in the stuff sack it came with. It's not a big deal though. It's a great quilt and I like how cheap it was.

  • Great buy! Get the Wide :)

    by Brad R. – 14th Jun 2017

Got my Econ Burrow 40 and tried it out over the past weekend when the temperatures dipped into the low 60s, Love it! I got mine long, wide, & with a sewn in footbox. Being 6 foot 3 I made the right choice and couldn't be happier! I was snug as a bug in my hammock with this top quilt, even with no under quilt (haven't bought their incubator yet). Very good quality, good elastic bands, stitching, fabric, etc... It is so light and soft to the touch! Definitely, recommend if you are in the market for a top quilt or looking to replace an old sleeping bag like I was! I initially had a faulty snap button on the top of the top quilt but they handled the return and replace super easily and returned it to me in time for my trip! Super Fast!! A+ Customer service

  • Top Notch and so comfortable

    by Grits – 6th Jun 2017

I saw Adam at trail days and he got my order shipped in a few days. I am back on the AT and the top quilt has made for some very comfortable sleeping. Product top quality and the service is over the top great. Thanks to Adam and all the crew at Hammock Gear.

  • Best quilts on the market

    by Anthony – 13th May 2017

Just got my econ quilt set... Wow. Absolutely nothing about these quilts says economy.
Super impressed with quality.... but not surprised. Just visit the hammock forums and you will know that Hammock Gear is the top dog for qu I lts and tarps. Bravo!

  • great quilt!

    by Dan – 10th May 2017

First time using a quilt backpacking/camping and loved it. Lightweight, warm and comfortable. Exactly what I was hoping for.

  • Very Happy

    by Bob K – 9th May 2017

I purchased the Econ 40 TQ the day they became available. Understandably, it took about a month to arrive as HG is surely very busy with new orders. It has been about two weeks or so since it arrived and I've slept in it every night. I couldn't be happier with the quilt. It's quality, weight, and price were all on point Good Job HQ.

  • AMAZING; opt for a wide if possible

    by Ricky – 24th Apr 2017

I recently got into hammock camping, and after my first night out, I realized no amount of blankets/sleeping bags would comfortably allow me to sleep on a hammock. I stumbled upon a forum praising HG's recently-released Econ quilts and snagged an Incubator Econ 30 and a Burrow Econ 40.

Used them this weekend for the first time and I couldn't be happier. I was skeptical as to the pair keeping me warm with no further insulation so i kept blankets nearby just in case the 40-degree weather was too cold for me.

nope. the few times I felt cold was because i turned slightly and my arm popped out of the quilt. Woke up perfectly toasty without breaking a sweat otherwise. I would opt for the wide if i purchased it again, but I can't complain over the standard. I'll be packing lighter next time i go camping for sure thanks to these products.

  • Excellent in every way!

    by unshavenman – 21st Apr 2017

I bought the Burrow Econ 20 for warm weather hanging and I couldn't be more pleased! The quality is outstanding, which is what I have come to expect from Hammock Gear, and the price point can't be beat. Thank you!

  • Can't beat it

    by Jim – 18th Apr 2017

Got my quilt 2 weeks ago, quality/stitching looks great.

I had it out for its first trip this weekend, it kept me warm and snug in 50 degrees with rain all night. I sleep warm and like that it didn't get too hot.

So far, no complaints. Can't beat it for the price.
