Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Incubator 0˚

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort... The Standard length Incubator 0° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 2". With premium quality, water resistaint, 850 fill power goose down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 0°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock all year around, you have found it.

The Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm. The Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system and a stuff sack.

Goose Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 8.5 liters, but due to the nature of goose down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of goose down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings

Adjusting a HammockGear Incubator Full Length Underquilt (09:53)
Hammockgear....http://www.hammockgear.com Incubator Underquilt....http://www.hammockgear.com/incubator-20/ I have been wanting to do a video on how to adjust and fit a full length Hammockgear Incubator underquilt. So, I finally got a custom one made so now I can show. It pains me when folks struggle to get the proper fit on a UQ. Hammock camping has a lot of moving pieces and insulation underneath is where most folks fail. My opinion is that UQs are the most difficult part of a hammock system for most people. Hope this gives some helpful insight. Whoooooo Buddy)))) Shug

All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.

  • Black - Argon 67 (10 denier)
  • Black - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)
  • Charcoal Gray - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)

  • Woodland Camo - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Fantastic..Lives Up to the Hupe

    by Matt – 6th Jun 2018

Bought this quilt back in 2016...just cleaning up some emails and realized I never did write a review after using this quilt. Definitely worth the money (even with our nasty exchange rate to the Canadian dollar). I've never had a cold night with it. Quality of stitching and design is great.

My only beef with this quilt (and my top quilt also from HG) is that the stuff suck is a touch too small. I know, I know, they are supposed to be a snug fit...I just find them a bit of work to get them all in as they are quite puffy (and there was a small gross grain loop on the end of both of my stuff sacks which let go and fell off) but this is an entirely minor point since it's the quilt which keeps you warm.

You will literally be toasty with this UQ beneath you! I live in Northern Ontario and take this out any time I hang just for the extra warmth.

Thanks so much for the great products HG folks!

  • Great Winter Quilt

    by Andy P – 26th Apr 2018

I used this underquilt this past winter and I will definitely be using it again next winter! It's super light and very warm. I've taken it down to 7 degrees and had no problem staying warm.

  • Warm, Warm, Warm

    by Hikenpaddleboy – 8th Mar 2018

I can't tell you how worried I was that I would be cold in a hammock in the middle of a Minnesota's winter night. Well I am here to tell you that my Incubator 0 degree put those fears to rest. After being out in it a few times I can sleep with no layers of fleece and stay as warm as can be. Great work Hammock Gear!!

  • warm, warm warm

    by Hikenpaddleboy – 28th Feb 2018

I can't believe how warm this underquilt is. Living in Minnesota it gets kinda cold in the winter nights so I ordered the maximum amount of extra down. Even in the coldest nights I can sleep with out the bulk of layers. I am confident I will stay warn no matter how cold it gets. There is an old Norwegian saying; " There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing" which can be also related as: "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear" Hammock Gear quilts are as Good as it Gets!!!

  • I gazed for days

by Oystein aka Crayons – 15th Feb 2018

My new incubator 0 has an outerwordly feel, fabric and color (I got inside moss green - outside olive green). This thing is light as feathers (no pun, yesireeBob). Tried it out last night in the Norwegian woods, temps were about 10 F below freezing. It felt really comfortable, can't wait to give it a harder test sometime soon. You can just tell this product was made and developed with both passion and great expertice. Would highly recommend!

  • Awesome piece of gear!

    by Unknown – 12th Feb 2018

This is my second HG Incubator, I have had a 40 for about 18 months now and love it. So, I knew what I was getting, but I am very satisfied with my new 0 degree. I used it for a Week long snowshoe trip in the North Cascades and I was actually a bit too warm, the temperature only got down to 15. I could have made some adjustments to cool things off, but I would rather be warm than cold, so it was perfect. I know I will be comfortable in this for years to come.

  • Superb piece of gear!!

    by Bob Moulder – 17th Jan 2018

Recently I did a trip where the first night featured 57°F temps and torrential rain the first night, followed by clearing and single-digit temps the next 2 nights. After the first night I thought the trip might be over because of all the blowing rain and thick mist that permeated nearly everything. I was shocked to find that the Argon 67 material and water-resistant did such an outstanding job repelling water that the Incubator had nothing more than some frozen drops of water on the outside, and with minimal airing-out it was completely dry. During the single-digit nights it kept me toasty warm, and I only had to get out once to cinch up the foot end a bit to close off a draft. I would not hesitate to recommend this UQ to anyone for serious outdoor use.

  • Stop thinking. Buy It!

    by Scott C. – 3rd Dec 2017

This is my second underquilt, and I can say with 100% certainty that I finally got it right. Zero degrees means zero degrees, and there is an amazing amount of adjustability to make sure you can eliminate any air gaps. String it up, lay in the hammock, and feel the fluffy cloud of warmth. I don't know how else to describe it. THEN, pair this with the HammockGear top quilt... Done. Shug Emery does a few great reviews of this product on YouTube if you want to see it in action. Additionally, you are just not going to be able to beat their customer service. Seriously, stop thinking and just buy it. You will not be sorry.

  • Incubator 0 - Awesome!!

by Kevin Piggott (UK) – 1st Dec 2017

I did extensive analysis of Underquilts and the result led me to Incubator O. Well i cannot say enough about this product, simply fantastic quality, stitching, material, cables. All made and put together with care, love and attention to detail.
I have used the Incubator a couple of times and it is as good as the reviews state simply awesome, very toasty, a good weight, packs away easily, the materials are extremely robust and the length is ideal for me (6'2"). I am extremely impressed with attention to detail, superb quality of stitching.
The product arrived in the UK it was well packed and the storage sack is a great idea.
I would say that the product is worth every penny (although it did cost me an extra £69 for UK customs) but i would buy it again and i am now looking at a Burrow to compliment my setup and i will NOT be doing any analysis as i will go straight to HG

    Thank you HG

  • Love it

    by TRBE – 1st Dec 2017

I've taken this (in tandem with an overstuffed 20F Burrow) down to about 16 degrees without issues. I'm confident this setup could go comfortably to single digits - lower if I used a bag liner or wool blanket in tandem.

HG's customer service leaves nothing to be desired.

  • Zero means ZERO.

    by Casey – 28th Nov 2017

From the customer service to the quality and value, I am absolutely blow away. I buy a lot of gear in quite a few different hobbies and it's so awesome when a company like HG gets everything right.
In short: 5 day back packing hog hunt in the mountains. Lows in the 20s. Easy setup (practiced b4 I left) and I climbed in with most of my clothes on like usual... I got up in the morning in just my base layer. I was almost too warm. You can literally feel the heat from the second you climb in! I'd highly recommend sticking to their temperature rating because the zero is way to warm for anything over 20 deg (imo) This under quilt has been a game changer for me and my hammock outings. Stop reading and buy one! Better yet, buy two if you need them. Congratulations HG on DOING WHAT YOU SAY YOU CAN and doing it at a great value.

  • fantastic quality

    by Andrew – 8th Nov 2017

Brought it to the White Mountains for my first use camped at 3200 it was in the upper teens low twenty’s and it kept me so warm just using a light bag that I didn’t want to get out of the hammock and was shocked at how cold it was outside when I did. I’ll definitely be getting a summer quilt.

  • Say Goodbye To C.B.S.

    by Jason T. – 26th Oct 2017

Cold Butt Syndrome is a thing of the past with this glorious UQ. We frequently winter camp in the Rockies and temps go down well below 0 all the time. I have yet to be cold with a HG UQ incubator and have had it through all conditions. It is well made and holds up to some rough wear for sure :)

  • Great Product, Great Seevice

    by Steve Boley – 15th Sep 2017

This is the fourth quilt I have purchased from HG. The design, fabrication, and overall quality of their products is outstanding. In fact, it is only exceeded by their commitment to the highest level of customer service. Thanks HG!!

  • warm and light weight

    by Rachel – 27th Jul 2017

I love the Incubator so far. I have taken it camping a couple of times with the lowest temperature in the 40s. I stayed toasty and pushed the blanket i had on me off. It is also light weight which is great to carry long distances.

  • So good!

    by Krystal – 24th May 2017

I used this over the weekend and this is going to make my transition to a hammock super easy! I sleep cold and this kept me very warm and comfortable all night.

  • So Far...So Good

    by Unknown – 21st May 2017

Upon opening the box I knew this was going to do the job! Pretty new to hammocking and have been testing out the hammock here at home, and Im glad I did! Would of froze to death! So now that I have the Incubator 0, I am looking forward to many great nights out under the stars. Have yet to try it in the field, but I sleep cozy and warm out on my balcony at night now. Buy it! You wont have any regrets.

  • exceeded all expectations

    by Unknown – 17th Apr 2017

What a great uq! I have tried a few different models from different manufacturers, and none have impressed me as much as this one. Besides the fact that it fit my Hennessy Jungle Explorer very well, it has kept me very toasty down to single digits f even though I set it up wrong. (Have someone help adjust it for you the first couple of times) I can't wait to get a burrow to complete the set! Thanks Hammock Gear!

  • Great product from a great company

    by Dan – 14th Apr 2017

I ordered my incubator on a tight deadline which was my fault. I put on The order when I needed it by. HG had my new gear candy in all its glory sitting on my porch the day before I left. Thanks to the awesome customer support I didn't spend my trip in the single digets freezing! My gear was great! I had watched a few videos on the product so I knew what to expect and the did not disappoint at all. I will be ordering more gear from HG.

  • Amazing Product!

    by Aron. – 10th Apr 2017

Revolutionary product for hammock enthusiasts! It's like having an electric blanket underneath you when you're hammock camping.

There's no substitute for this kind of quality.

P.S. I have the Incubator 0. No overfill. Slept in -7c with comfort.

  • Great quality & top notch customer service

    by Unknown – 14th Mar 2017

I am a total gear junky who owns way to many pieces of gear! I typically don't like to leave rewiews, but I wanted to take a minute and say that I recently purchased this amazing underquilt for my son who was coming home from college for a backpack trip and like any great father would do I pulled it out looked it over & gave it a quick one night test in our woods. I was pleasantly surprised with the great quality. I also have to confess that when I ordered it I mad a bone head move and ordered the wrong color. So I contacted them immediately & they mad the correction to my order & then expedited the order so I could have it in time for our trip...... I gave them 5 STARS on both their product & service... I will tell all my friends in the backpack community!

  • Excellent Purchase!

    by Unknown – 2nd Mar 2017

I can't believe I didn't buy this underquilt sooner. Such a great investment and much better than the air pad I had been using for quite some time in my hammocks. I'm hooked for life...thanks HG! Well made and very toasty warm.

  • Great UQ

    by Ian Bolden – 22nd Feb 2017

    Well worth the cost.

  • Best Quality, Performance, and Value!

    by Murph – 21st Feb 2017

(Review for both Incubator and Burrow 0 degree quilts) When the quilts arrived I immediately set up in backyard for a comfortable night sleep in below 20 degree weather. As I watched the snow fall past the edge of my tarp I knew I made the right choice buying my quilts from Hammock Gear.

  • incubator 0

    by Travis Lane – 15th Feb 2017

Truly awesome piece of kit to extend your comfort in the hammock in cold weather.Just used it out in the field this past week-in the Cascades in -5 degrees and was comfortable for about 6 hours of straight sleep-after that my body began to feel a little chilled and I woke up.I would rate this a 10-10 because it was doing its job.Very pleased with the quality too.

  • incubator 0 and pillow

    by Anton Butler – 31st Jan 2017

January 2017 Customer service and communication was first rate. Quality of workmanship and materials are excellent. I have used these products for 17 consecutive nights in temps ranging from 60 degrees F to 9 degrees F. After a short learning curve on adjustments of underquilt I have been warm and comfortable. I am amazed how quickly the underquilt and pillow warm up. Compresses well for backpacking and lofts back up quickly. Great products and worth every dime spent.

  • better than I thought

    by 1BigPaddle – 30th Jan 2017

I purchased this thinking 0 degree would be more like a 20 degree rating. I was surprised how warm it was. I gave it a couple of test runs at -8, and 0 degrees. I didn't use a sleeping bag just laid in my hammock and read for a couple of hours. I could feel the heat on my back. I can't imagine how warm it would be if I had ordered it with extra down! I was very impressed! Definitely going to purchase another one!

  • 0° incubator overstuffed

by Paul in NY – 24th Jan 2017

Purchased on the suggestion from Schug !
I took it on its maiden voyage for my first Hammocj experience, Adirondacks with the temperature in the teens This was the most comfortable and warm sleep I've ever had camping !' I will be using it in a few days again in the Adirondacks, supposed to be single digits. I feel completely confident taking this under quilt below zero temps. The folks at Hamic gear rushed my order out so that I could bring it to an ice climb. Much appreciated on the delivery time and workmanship! I will definitely be back to buy more products from Hammockgear. !!!

  • awesome

    by Arthur k – 17th Jan 2017

Well I have to say I got it in time before my trip. Easy set up. the incubator 0. 4 oz over stuffed. I tried it out the first night .wow it got down to 14 degrees outside. I was warm. I was surprised how well it worked out for me for someone who never did winter camping before I'm amazed buy there product I do recommend there gear

  • New Incubator 0 degree

    by Clay – 16th Jan 2017

While I have not tested the limits of my brand new Incubator, the craftsmanship is wonderful! Questions were answered very promptly and wait time was minimal. Wonderful company and would buy from again in a heartbeat!

  • Great underquilt

    by Jesse – 16th Jan 2017

Toasty, snug and very quick, easy to attach.

  • Great underquilt!

    by DrHydrate – 3rd Jan 2017

Great warmth and great product. I am a believer in a little overkill and normally don't go into 0 degree weather and have been very happy with the incubator 0. I'd rather sleep a little warm than on the cool side and that's why I skipped the Incbtr 20 for this one. Fantastic product!!!

  • Great piece of hammock warmth.

    by DrHydrate – 29th Dec 2016

Fantastic underquilt, light weight, if you have a hammock and are looking for more warmth this is the way to go. Worth ever penny!!!

  • Great product, best-in-class service

    by Jeff – 7th Dec 2016

I love my Incubator--used it last weekend in the Adirondacks with a Burrow 0 top quilt. Overnight low estimated to be 15*F, with winds of 20-30 knots. Slept very warm!
Even better was the customer service. I ordered my quilt on the Tue before Thanksgiving and asked for delivery before 9 Dec--It was sewn and shipped the next day, and I received it on the Monday after Thanksgiving. I don't think anyone could do better than that, and it far exceeded expectations. Thanks, HG, for a superior product and superior service!

  • incredible underquilt

    by Steve, Iowa. – 6th Dec 2016

I just purchased my 2nd 0 deg incubator. Superb quality, design, and performance. I have taken the incubator down to -5 deg and was still amazingly warm. It's as if there is no bottom limit. Kidding, of course, but I am continually impressed with this piece of gear. Hats off to the folks at Hammock Gear.

  • Great Buy

    by Luke – 29th Nov 2016

I got the Morracan blue inside and charcoal grey outside and it looks sick. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of this product. The 0 Degree Incubator kept me cozy in my hammock through 22 degree nights with little top covering, and I couldn't find a missed stich or flaw when looking it over. The product looks very professional and hammock gear is great to work with!

  • awesome quilt

    by Pete – 18th Nov 2016

Hands down my favorite piece of camping gear, I stay toasty warm all night long!

  • Can't beat the quilts. Great customer service.

    by Bryan – 17th Nov 2016

I just ordered my third and fourth quilt from hammock gear. Great quality all the way around. Lots of loft. Good design. These guys even got it to me super fast so I could make a trip.

  • Excellent Product & Service

    by Virginia – 17th Nov 2016

I couldn't be happier with my new zero degree Incubator! The folks at Hammock Gear were great to deal with and the quality on this quilt is exceptional. I FINALLY had a chance to use it this past weekend...it lofted up nice, was easy to attach, and kept me warm. Thank you!

  • excellent product, quickly delivered!

    by David Thomas – 31st Oct 2016

Great quilt. Lightweight and well made. Very short wait time. Can't wait to try it out in cold weather!

    by J. Cullop – 31st Oct 2016

First - Let me say, you won't find better service ANYWHERE. I ordered 2 Incubator 0 under quilts with overstuff and did not place the order in time for an upcoming trip. I called and they were more than happy to expedite the order. We received the product earlier than expected but unfortunately was unable to make the trip due to a death in the family. That said, The Service couldn't have been more helpful or professional.

On to the Under quilts.... Mother Nature has not helped with this. Each time we've attempted to use this or have used it, the weather has been much warmer than anticipated. We took the under quilts to a trip in Big South Fork, TN and used the quilts in mid-fifty degrees. THEY ARE AMAZING. My wife and I are both cold sleepers, and our bags are not that great. The'yre rated for 35 degrees, however we've been cold in 50 degrees with our bags. While using the Incubator 0, we both sweat our tails off when in the bags. The quilts are extremely warm and very easy to set up. I would love to have the 20 degree or 40 for the warmer weather, but my budget demands I choose only one. I chose the zero degree to use throughout the entire season if possible.

If you don't buy one of these quilts - you're doing yourself an injustice.

We can't wait to keep trying out the limits as the temperature drops.

Thank you Hammock Gear - we are enjoying an extended camping season thanks to you.

  • Pure Quality

    by Rich D – 31st Oct 2016

Even though I had to pay shipping and then import tax on this Under quilt. I'm glad I did as it beats any of the UK made down quilts hands down and makes main branded ones look like baby blankets. Nothing but quality!
Not tried over night yet but tested in the back yard and already know it will easily reach 0 deg. Can't wait! Thanks guys for an awesome item

  • WARM!!!!

    by Hunter Coffey – 29th Oct 2016

Great underquilt keeps you warm in freezing temps without over quilt . Great customer service would highly recommend going to hammock gear!

  • Impressive

    by Marty – 28th Oct 2016

Ordered this for my wife and think it will work excellent excited for a chance to try it out. Only 4 stars due to the 10% off sale just a couple of weeks after purchasing 2 quilts this one and a 10 degree one for myself

  • so far so good but...

    by Joshua Johnson – 26th Oct 2016

Out of the box was very nice. From the time of ordering until it arrived on my doorstep was 10 days total. They told me I was around 3 weeks out, so it was nice to see it so soon.
The stuff and storage sack is a nice touch also.

Setting up took a little time, but was pretty straight forward once I became familiar with everything. The color matching double wire-gate biners really impressed me, as well as the d clips on the sides of the UQ. I just wish the biner clips didn't have the teeth in the gate. They snag everything while hooking on my straps or hammock.

The quality of material and loft of the quilt was very nice. You can see what you paid for. The adjustment strings and elastic bands seem to hold up just fine, even if snugged up very close. Stitching looks great, I haven't found any blown out or missewn areas yet.

Unfortunately, on a day trip, at 40 degrees, I began to feel a cold spot on my right hip that wouldn't go away. Even with 2 oz overfill, I could feel about a 4x4 area that wasn't as warm as the rest of my body. It was cold, and uncomfortable. I tried fluffing and adjusting to see if that would help, but it didn't. So in preparation for my November high mountain trip, I'm going to try a backyard overnighter. I'm really hoping the cold spot is gone, or I will have to reach out to HG for support.

Overall the quilt is good, and with this being my most expensive piece of equipment, I'm ok saying I paid 307 total for this.

  • Excellent Product - Completely Satisfied, I Love My Incubator

    by Avernite – 25th Oct 2016

This underquilt from Hammock Gear is every bit as good as the other reviewers say it is (i.e. awesome). So instead of repeating their accolades overmuch I'll give you a few anecdotes. The Incubator 0° I have is standard-sized, black 90, with 2 extra ounces of overfill.

    1. The fabric and stitching are of excellent quality. I have not found any flaws and have often stopped to admire this product.

    2. I have found this underquilt, once optimally suspended, to be nearly impervious to strong gusts of freezing-cold wind even without the protection of a fly tarp. Very impressive.

    3. With the Incubator 0° installed I am able to stay comfortably warm in my 3-season overquilt down to -5°C (23°F). Using that same overquilt with my other 3-season 3/4 length underquilt I start getting cold at around 5°C (41°F). That's a big difference.

    4. I also purchased a Burrow 0° with 2 extra ounces of overfill and when I use it with the Incubator I actually find myself overheating in 0°C (32°F) temperatures with gusts of wind, and I have to keep the top of the Burrow open and pulled down to let some of the heat out. I now only use the Incubator 0° + Burrow 0° combination in -5°C (23°F) or colder temperatures. I anticipate I'll be comfortably warm down to -15°C (5°F) or possibly colder using those two quilts.

    5. My experience with Hammock Gear customer service has been great. They were happy to provide me with tips on how to optimally hang my underquilt (which is very important to get the full performance of this product). I recommend purchasing a pair of Dutch's Ridgeline Quilt Hooks along with the Incubator - they are inexpensive and help to ensure a snug fit between the Incubator and the bottom of your hammock.

  • Great craftsmanship

    by Unknown – 24th Oct 2016

This is my second UQ that I have purchased. I sold my first one to buy this one and had special work done on the new one. One the 0 deg quilt I had an extra baffle added to give me the added coverage that I wanted for my wide shoulders. With this added baffle, I love the coverage this one provides. Thank you HG for the great work.

  • Great Product!

    by Lori – 7th Oct 2016

I used my new Incubator for 2 nights in the Cascades of Oregon. The weather was periodic rains and cool temperatures of 45 degrees in the day and mid to upper 30's at night. Constant moisture in the air. This underquilt combined with my down bag worked together to provide a warm cocoon of bliss. I did occasionally pull my bag open to vent so I know I can easily do colder temps. I've never slept so comfortably in the outdoors. I have a Hennessy hammock with rainfly.

  • Excellent service & craftsmanship (incubator 0 2oz overstuff)

    by clickbelow.co.nz – 1st Sep 2016

Tested 2 nights on Hennessy Explorer Deluxe (also fits smaller Hennessy temp 0 degrees celcius). Once adjusted properly (even not and its very easy to adjust) unbelieve difference to hennessy 4 seasons kit (which just didn't do it for me even in warmer conditions). I was very warm and comfortable, looking forward to testing at -10 celcius soon. Heading to New Zealand south coast today into "storm" conditions I have every confidence in this quilt its just awesome. Quality impressive & faultless which is apparent from the moment you recieve the quilt. I was concerned with the fit on a larger hammock but its fine, may be even better suited to a hammock without size guylines but "it just works" and is considerably faster and easier than previous options which were frankly, a joke in comparison. I used the underskin which you can get for hennessy's to double up the end seals due to a cold wind during testing, thinking I didn't need to though.

  • excellent underquilt

    by Amy – 22nd Jul 2016

My boyfriend has ordered in the past and convinced me this was the company to choose for the best quilt and underquilt.
I am so happy with the purchase. Sleeping outside in New Hampshire for the past week and I'm so cozy! Still summer, so I haven't tried the quilt, but I expect the both will keep me warm all year!
Beautiful product and excellent communication with staff!

  • excellent craftsmanship

by Jaap Zeldenrust, The Netherlands – 7th Jul 2016

I won't be able to use this underquilt in cold conditions for a few months, so I don't have an opinion on the insulating quality, but the craftsmanship is beautiful. The quilt follows the contours of the hammock excellently, all the stitching is top notch, the draft strips at the ends are really well made. Money well spent.

  • The absoulute best underquilt!

    by BushManTan – 18th Jun 2016

I must first say that I am just a customer making an honest review. I first purchased a Mt. Washington 3 from Jacksrbetter and was thoroughly disappointed. Their design is flawed. The direction of their baffles allow gravity to pull the "down" down away from ur shoulders and arms leaving those parts exposed to the outside temperature. Buyer beware of that and their return policy (It's not consumer friendly and expensive to return).

Now for the Incubator 0. Honestly, everything from the stitching to the baffles to the speed which I received the underquilt is and should be a benchmark for all in the industry. It only took 5 days to receive my underquilt but I also live in Ohio which is only a few hours away. I was wanting a zero degree underquilt for cold weather applications but afraid of it being too warm for the summer. This quilt is perfect for 4 seasons no doubt. This summer I tested it with both ends open to allow more airflow and slept perfectly in a 87 degree evening. If you are in the market for an underquilt, don't make the mistake I did with Jacksrbetter. Save your time and money and get it from hammock gear. You will not be disappointed! Hope this helps! Now get out in those woods and sleep well!

Thanks again Hammock Gear! You guys rock!

  • best quilt anywhere

    by hanging free – 6th Jun 2016

As winter never really ends here in the high country of Colorado I needed high quality gear to keep up with the low temps! It took 3weeks to recieve this puppy! Not bad! And I've take. It out 3times since then. With the coldest night only dipping to 30 or so. However I was snug as a bug in a rug. And experienced optimal warmth. This underquilt is easy to adjust to eliminate gaps and packs down small. Thanks HG you have earned a lifetime customer!

This UQ kept me warm on my 5 night trip with some chilly nights with continuous rain. I couldn't ask for a better product!

  • Great piece of gear

    by Dave – 10th May 2016

When I first got it, I thought it was going to be too bulky, but being down it compressed just fine to a manageable size. No problems at all. Compared to my DYI insultex quilt it is more compressable and stays in place better as I move around in my Blackbird. Great customer service.

  • Toasty Sleeping

    by Romer – 4th May 2016

I do a lot of late fall and winter camping in the Northwest and needed something that was going to be able to keep up with those cold nights.

    This does the trick.

The build quality is top notch, it packs down small, and it keeps me warm.

If you're facing any nights where the temp goes to 0-degrees while in a hammock, this is the go-to option to ensure you don't wake up with hypothermia.

    by Bigfoot – 25th Apr 2016

  • First underquilt

    by Unknown – 24th Apr 2016

Can't really compare to others UQs but this worked great for me. Had a friend that also has an HG 10 incubator help me set it up and it worked perfectly. HG delivered my order quickly which allowed us to make a 3 day hike with some friends. Surprised at how little adjustment it took to get a good fit.

    by Chuck – 5th Mar 2016

I ordered this early February for a hang the first weekend in March. The gang at HG came through with my 0 degree incubator in record time. Wow, what a quality product. With the wind chill, the temperature dropped well below freezing and I was nice and toasty in my hammock. Now I'm saving up for a HG top quilt purchase.

Worth every penny! My first winter camp we got a foot of snow and then the temp dropped to -15 with windchill. I used this with a 20 degree bag and I slept like a baby. I have used this about 5 or 6 times now and love it. Outstanding products and customer service. Everyone I know who winter camps has one of these.

  • beautiful piece of work!

    by Nick Kunstler – 3rd Feb 2016

I haven't fully tested my incubator 0 yet! I have spent one night on on my patio with an overnight low 34(well above the UQ's rating) and felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. The craftsmanship is first rate and the customer service is fantastic. Remember these are made to order, but mine only took two and a half weeks to ship during Christmas time. Well worth the wait, I'm excited to order more from hammock gear!

  • Kept me comfortable in a snow storm.

    by Carlos – 27th Jan 2016

Got a chance to try it out in the hoosier national forest, the temperature swung from 50 during the day to low teens and single digits with wind chill at night. A rain/snow storm moved in at night as the temp started dropping, I had my tarp in porch mode and woke to freezing rain hitting my face. I should add we were atop of a windy ridge. I brought the tarp down closed the doors just to have the stakes pulled out and tarp bashed around by wind. Needless to say the underquilt did get wet but to my surprise it wicked the rain and remained dry ! By morning my tarp was covered in ice and snow but the Incubator did keep me warm the whole night. This piece of gear gives me peace of mind when I know the weather is going to be harsh and even if the temps are higher it has a great ventilating system, just loosen the shock cord via cordlock. Things I like most about the Incubator would be baffle design and the way it contours to your body, the fabric is awesome and the extra tie out points to pull it up closer to hammock is something you don't see on other quilts, and of course the high loft. It was well worth it and I'll be back at some point for a top quilt. Hat's off to the Hammockgear team!

  • 100% Awesome Sauce

    by Tim Hanlon – 23rd Jan 2016

Just ordered my 3rd 0 degree Incubator to complete what I need for my family. Great product .. You will NOT be let down by their performance and quality. Just what you would expect from a cottage industry like HG.. Why not 5 stars? --No directions or guidance on how to properly set it up on your hammock as far as the primary suspension and the secondary suspension, plus, how they interact with each other..

  • "Hot at 27 degrees"

    by Joe Sisson – 20th Jan 2016

I am not new to hammock hiking, but am new to doing it in the winter. I am hiking the Sheltowee trail with a team of hikers this year, and they all use Hammock Gear products. I purchased the incubator 0 and spent two nights out in it with the low at 27 degrees. I have a 20 degree HG over quilt on top, and woke up at 1:38am to shed the fleece I went to sleep in. I can't recommend their product any better then to say " It just works".

  • Unbelievably warm and unmistakable quality

    by Chris Emmons – 20th Jan 2016

I cannot describe how incredibly warm the Incubator 0 is under your hammock. The quality and attention to detail is top notch. I would highly recommend Hammock Gear to friends. Great quality, service and their products perform exactly like they say. I am very satisfied.

  • very warm

    by Steve – 19th Jan 2016

I purchased the 0 degree burrow and incubator both with 4oz of overfill which, going by the stuffing on the various quilts, should bring the rating down to about -10 degrees. I tested them last night at +10 degrees F and was just hot enough to worry about sweating. I was dressed only in a medium weight wool baselayer and winter wool socks. No pants, shirt, sweater, etc. Only a fleece balaclava and knit cap for my head. I am considerable cooler in my bed under a blanket with the house thermostat set at 71 degrees.

I am very satisfied with the quality. All the material and stitching looks great.

  • First time out

by Keith (Trail Medic) – 4th Jan 2016

I was advised by Warnonett that the Incubator was the best full length Underquilt for the WBBB XLC. So, that's what I went with. Out of the box the quality of craftsmanship is clear. It is top notch!

I set up my XLC out front and the Incubator fit like a glove.
Next came the sleep test. It only got down to 28 degrees, but there were no cold spots.

I'll know more in a couple of weeks after the "Hoosier Winter Hang". So check out my field review on the Trail Medic channel on YouTube for more information on this great product.

  • Love it

Did one night out near Marquette MI. Temps dropped to about 20 degrees F. I was toasty warm. I am looking to really give it a test when we start dropping into the negatives. Thanks again guys! You make some amazing underquilt and camping gear. Highly recommended.

  • A fantastic product and great people to deal with

    by Tim – 23rd Dec 2015

At first I was somewhat hesitant to purchase the product because I knew virtually nothing about under quilts. It represented a sizable investment and I just wasn't sure how effective the product would be. Boy was I pleasantly surprised!

First I did my research, which lead me here to Hammock Gear. Every review I read made me realize that the Incubator 0 was the product I was looking for.

I decided to contact HG to ask some questions and discovered that they were literally located right down the road from me. I was welcomed into their factory and Harry took me around, showed me the product, and answered virtually every question I could muster. He and all the other folks at HG were extremely friendly and helpful. They not only provided me with helpful information about their product, but were very generous with tips and helpful advice about hammock camping in general. I placed my order and left there very confident in my purchase decision.

My quilt was finished and ready far sooner than I had expected. Harry helped me get my quilt "dialed in" and showed me all of the benefits of my new quilt.

I took my quilt out on its "maiden voyage" on a night that never got above the mid 20's, and boy was I impressed. There was snow on the ground and an icy chill in the air, but I stayed completely warm and toasty in my Incubator 0! I was shocked at how comfortable I stayed. I couldn't feel better about my purchase.

I am really excited for the cold weather of late January and February to kick in. I know I will sleep warmly in the comfort of my HG Incubator 0. A great product with a great group of people behind it.... Thanks HG!

  • Easy setup, consistent warmth, adjustable

by Dan the scout Dad – 19th Dec 2015

I saved my pennies for a long time, read a lot of reviews and finally made my purchase over the summer. Got my first chance to use it on a windy October camporee night that went into the high 20's. Was very warm and comfortable. Camped out again in November, again a breezy night where temps dropped into the teens - still very comfortable. Looking forward to January and February campouts!

  • Love it..

  • Absolutely Wonderful UQ!! Top-notch Workmanship and Design!!

by Shirley aka 'Cricket' on HF – 31st Oct 2015

My husband and I are beyond pleased with our Incubator 0 underquilts! We used them a few nights in the forest already and they fit and functioned perfectly!

I ordered them Oct 6, 2015, and they shipped them USPS Priority mail on Oct 14. We had them in plenty time for our Oct 21 deadline for leaving on our trip (thank you!!).

I proudly showed them to a friend who is a professional seamstress, and she basically dropped her jaw in amazement as she examined them.

    Thank you, Hammock Gear!!

    by Bob Medows – 22nd Oct 2015

Amazingly warm and great design. Adjustability is super. I cannot believe something this light has so much loft. I am seriously looking at a Burrow 0 next year.

  • Simply works

    by White – 19th Oct 2015

Used on the AT/LT in Vermont and was astounded as to the ease of setup and the ability to keep out the cold. No more CBS for me!

  • -20* custom order

    by Joe – 8th Oct 2015

After speaking to Harry about the particularly cold weather we experience in my A.O. He informed me that he could adjust a 0* incubator to withstand -20*.

I have yet to push the quilt to those temps, but I have brought it down to about 20* so far and have stayed quite toasty!

The quilt works about as well as a full size quilt can with my asymmetrical warbonnet blackbird XLC and is a breeze to setup.

To top the cake I got my quilt less than a week after placing the order.

Between the excellent customer service, quality and craftsmanship of the product I couldn't be happier.

If you're on the fence....Buy it.

  • Incredible product/Incredible customer Support

    by Kevin – 29th Sep 2015

This is my second incubator 0. My son is now into scouting and loves his hammock and his underquilt. The quality is superb and the customer support makes the decision a no-brainer. I use this quilt if the temps will be lower than 65 and have been warm down to 19 degrees and have not doubt it could keep me warm lower. My 11 year old was able to figure the quilt out on his own and had it hooked up perfectly on his first attempt. Simply an amazing product and company. Thanks again hammockgear!

  • Versatile; If You Could Have Only One UnderQuilt....

    by Andrew BWCA – 28th Jun 2015

Experience: 10-15 nights in the backyard at temps ranging from 10degrees to 70 degrees; 8 nights in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (Northern MN); temps ranged from 45 to 55 at night.

After experiencing night-time temperature fluctuations while on a previous camping trip (55 to 30 swing), my summer underquilt did not keep me warm. I opted for the zero degree since my summer underquilt does fine at temps to 50 degrees; this was to be my back-up or my underquilt for all other seasons. Stayed warm at 10 degrees (although I needed to run paracord to help snug up the UQ to my backside. Additionally, worked great at tempts as high as 50 degrees. At this range the underquilt needed no 'dialing' in and I could simply vent it if I was too hot. In these warmer temps, I paid no attention to careful tarp placements and wind blocks and remained extremely comfortable. I set up my hammock on an extremely windy peninsula and stayed warm despite the constant wind.

Love the primary and secondary suspension set up. Allowed for easy adjustment to my Warbonnet Blackbird.

Finally, in the warmer temps of 50 degrees +, I loved having this warmer underquilt. I didn't even need to have my topquilt over me and slept comfortably. Great nights sleep.

  • best hammock sleep ever

    by jimmy – 26th May 2015

set up my Incubator right out of the box. Very simple to attach too my hammock (Hennessy Deep Jungle XL). Fit naturally and was so comfortable, that I dozed off for a quick nap. The suspension allows easy adjustments Thor tweaking the fit. Quality of construction is great.

  • It's just GREAT

    by Shawn – 20th May 2015

I used my Incubator 0 for the first time a few days after receiving it. I took it with me on a trip up to the Catskills for two nights where the temperatures dropped down into the mid-40s each night. I never felt even chilly once... Quite opposite actually. At one point on the first night, I actually unzipped my bag and got down to my t-shirt. The form and fit of the quilt is flawless. At different points during the night after moving around in my hammock doing the “sleeping bag shuffle” I'd feel over the edge certain that the quilt had shifted or moved because of my adjusting, but sure enough it was right where it should be, hugging me in a quilt of warmth. For warmer temperature nights like that you can draw open the ends of quilt to allow for a little more relaxed fit, and that seems to do the trick.

It also compresses down nicely into your pack as well. I was able to fit mine into a size small Sea to Summit dry compression sack. After getting it into the sack, and rolling closed the lid about three times, I was then able to compress it down even further. The Incubator 0 degree quilt WINS on all fronts!! Nice work to Hammock Gear, I will definitely be getting more products (like a top quilt!) from them in the future.

  • Great Product

    by Unknown – 6th May 2015

I brought the incubator 0 on my last trip and lived it. It was 15 degrees at night and i was nice and warm with the incubator. The customer service was great too. I ordered it right before my trip and they were able to get it to me within a week.

  • Best customer service ever!!

    by David Haden – 3rd May 2015

I have used my Incubator 0 in (what some would consider) extreme conditions. I live in Colorado and only just took up hammock camping a few years ago. I have used this underquilt at 10,000+ foot elevations and never once got cold. But you can read a lot of good reviews about the product all over this page. I want to focus on another subject...

I recently had to send my Incubator 0 back to Hammock Gear for a minor repair job (small hole - completely my fault). The level of customer service I received was excellent!!!!! From letting me know that they had received it, to the completion of the work requested, to shipping it back to me with a tracking number... they kept me informed through the entire process and I never had to wonder what was going on. Thanks guys and gals for the GREAT job!

  • Unbelievably Versatile

    by Stephen – 29th Apr 2015

This far exceeded my expectations. The first weekend after receiving the Incubator 0, we went on an overnight trip. The next morning it was 2 degrees. No issues at all. I did not want to get out of bed. I wanted to try it in warmer weather before I submitted this review.

I just returned from turkey hunting where it was between 55 & 62 each night. I used the Incubator 0 each night and did not get hot. I did not draw the ends and slept very comfortable with a poncho liner for my top quilt.

Hats off to Adam and his team for the quality products they produce. I just received notice my Burrow 0 has shipped. I cannot wait for cooler weather to give this a try. I have a setup that will take me 4 seasons.

You will not be disappointed with the quality of the performance.

  • fantastic under quilt

    by jon – 22nd Apr 2015

Used on nylon hammock. I got standard size and it fits me perfectly. I'm 5'7. I used it in Colorado at 8k feet April 2015. First time I've ever been able to sleep naked in my cheap bag having this incubator under me. I used two Oz overstuffed. Absolutely amazing quality. Packs down a lot for backpacking and when I have it left out hanging for storage it puffs out and is nice and lofty.

very happy to not use my pad anymore under me while hammocking. Warmer and much more comfortable.
