Hammock Gear Under Quilts
Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".
Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.
About the Incubator 0˚
The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort... The Standard length Incubator 0° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 2". With premium quality, water resistaint, 850 fill power goose down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 0°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock all year around, you have found it.
The Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down. This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm. The Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system and a stuff sack.
Under Quilt Advantages
Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of goose down under quilts. To summarize:
|Fill Weight||15.0 oz||16.0 oz||17.0 oz|
|Total Weight||25.3 oz||26.3 oz||27.3 oz|
We utilize the finest 850 fill power, water-resistant goose down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.
All under quilts are made of ARGON fabric. ARGON is a proprietary ripstop nylon manufactured for Hammock Gear. All top quilts use a 10-denier ARGON which weighs 0.67 ounces per square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.
All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.
At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

Ready to go out of the box. Took my Incubator 0 out the day I got it for a 35 deg test run and couldn't be more impressed. It is SUPER warm!! Definitely worth the wait, the quality of this product is 2nd to none.

I love my incubator. I am often cold so bought the warmest one I could find, and have found my self toasty (and sometimes hot) using it. It's incredible, and the folks at Hammock Gear are great to work with!

So far iv had my uq for a couple weeks and iv slept in my hammock as much as possible, I can honestly say that I have not been cold at all since. I actually slept in my hammock in 60 degree weather and I didn't have anything else, and I was smoldering! Drenched in sweat and somewhat uncomfortable, this was somewhat my own fault due to having my mosquito netting down and the too totally closed up. But yeah, awesome product, people were not kidding when they say you can actually feel the heat almost immediately, like the uq has it's own heat source or something. I am super happy and I can't wait till winter. Thanks hammockgear!

The gear you get from hammock gear is hands down the best, most well made gear you can get for your roughest conditions. There product quality is unmatched and they work very hard at making sure your order is to spec and fits your needs. Thank you for a fantastic underquilt and a great experience. I recommend these sellers.

I'm amazed it's so lightweight. It pack's down very small. It's a work of art. Now I just need to buy the "Incubator 40" & the "Burrow 40" & my ultralight gear will be completed..

I really can't find the right words to describe how I feel about this fabulous under quilt! I have only actually used it once, but I can tell you that I am looking forward to many more nights of pure cozy down heaven! It is so fluffy and warm!
So last week I finally got out to the woods to try out my new gear! I went alone, which was ok with me, and I took my time getting everything set up. As I was sleeping, I woke up because my shoulder was cold. I unzipped my bug net, felt beneath my hammock, and discovered that the quilt had slipped a bit. (I'll take credit for that. It was my first set up and I tend to toss and turn a bit) I just moved it back into place, zipped back up and voila! I was instantly toasty warm! I don't have a top quilt yet, but will be ordering a burrow soon! I just used a light sleeping bag that I unzipped this time. Maybe a couple of different top quilts!

Great Product. keeps you nice and toasty while sleeping or longing around in your hammock. Light weight so was easy to use on a backpacking trip. Highly recommend this for all hammock people

unfortunately, I had broken my clavicle and 6 ribs on my back in a bicycle accident. I had just received my under quilt about a week or two before, and I was waiting for a very cold night, of which none had come. to make up for it, this is my third night out in my backyard with this under quilt and it has been 30- 40 degrees these nights.
I have a down coat on and a 30 Degree Monte Belle bag just draped over me, and even midway through the night I am Not really covered over. this underquilt is phenomenal! I can't wait until next winter time.
by stephen – 14th Apr 2014
I have yet to get a chance to try the incubator in temps below 35 so far but am really looking forward to it this coming winter and am certain if its anything as warm as it is at 35 when its 15 I will sleep like a baby. I have been able to test the treated down though in temps ranging from high thirties to low fourty degrees and constant down pour of rain for two days straight and can tell you that even with such high humidity the down never lost its insulative ability to retain its warmth and was very pleased with that and the amount of adjustability to the suspension provided by hammock gear I could not think of a better piece of gear to bring along on winter trips to keep me warm at night. so far I am very happy with the new purchase and look forward to years of use on my adventures. two thumbs up hammock gear team!

great construction, very warm with lots of loft, and very packable... Couldn't ask for more so far.

This under quilt is amazing. I bought a 0 degree with two extra oz. It fight perfect on my Hennessey , you can feel the heat instantly after you lay down. If your on the fence about buying one just do it. It is worth every penny. Very well made, not one loose thread. Thank you very much hammockgear.

I love this thing. Very,Very high quality UQ. Adam took the time to talk me thru everything I needed and answered all my questions and gave me some excellent recommendations. when the UQ arrived everything was as I wanted (NO SUPRISES). I am 6-2" - 280lbs the one I ordered was a perfect fit for me and my hammock. 1st night out 21* it keep me very warm. no drafts or cold spots. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone. I will be ordering one for my wife.
by Grapenut – 11th Feb 2014
I could not be happier with this product. I ordered a 0-degree Incubator after accepting an invitation for a winter trip on the AT in the Smokies. I asked Adam if he could expedite my order and he was happy to oblige. I fell Ill with a bug just before the trip and never got a chance to hang and "fit" my new Incubator before the trip. That turned out to be a non-issue. The tapered baffles and draft collars on Stormcrow's latest design made fitting the underqult a easy as simply connecting it to each end of my 11-foot gathered end hammock. That is all I had to do! No CBS!

I have camped several times this winter in near zero degree weather, and finally ordered an incubator 0. I found it east to set up with my ENO double nest, and I had the warmest night yet. I was very comfortable all night with a low of 5 degrees F. I have slept with both a pad and homemade under quilt ....NO comparison! I can't say enough good things about the underquilt. I wish I had purchased it several months ago. Well worth the money, with good service.
by Unknown – 6th Feb 2014
I absolutely love this underquilt! I had it out in 30 degree weather and I didn't feel any cold at all! It was one of the best investments I made for my hammock! Highly recommend!
by Seb – 6th Jan 2014
I just got a 0deg Incubator a couple of weeks ago.. I bought it as an upgrade for my first underquilt, a Snugpak synthetic one, weighing 1300g! Now this baby should keep me warmer than the Snugpak quilt and that for only half the weight! I am yet to try it out, but hope to be able to pair it with my Hennessy Hammock Expedition asym zip any time soon.
I must say that I am impressed by the way it is put together, real quality stitching. The suspension system is well thought of. And last but not least: that Argon Brown fabric looks pretty cool.

I have been extremely satisfied with the 0 incubator. It's built very well and packed full of small features that make a big difference. This is truly ready go out of the box. The un boxing/first test was a low 20F night that left me with a true respect for quality gear. my other gear did not hold up that well and I wound up hanging in a bit eirly with my incubator to stay warm. If you are on the edge like I was just do it. It's more than worth it in the warmth and a huge dirence in size and weight in the pack.
by Gary Goldsmith – 27th Dec 2013
This is my fourth item that I have purchased from Hammock Gear and one word can sum it all up…QUALITY…If you are tired of freezing between the trees just do it and order. You will not be disappointed.
by Tim C - 25 Dec 2013 – 24th Dec 2013
Rec eived the zero degree Incubator yesterday. Fast and hassle free delivery to Australia. Havent had the chance to use it yet but it appears to be really well made and packs up small and light which is what I was looking for. Should keep me warm even through the coldest deer hunting over here.
by James Harris – 18th Dec 2013
I took my new 0 degree incubator (2 oz overfill) out for a three night trip on the Appalachian Trail in mid-Virginia recently. I have several torso-length underquilts but this is my first full length one. I found it very easy to set up on my 10-ft hammock as it needed practically no adjustments. I was toasty warm at 13 degrees F and I feel certain that I would have been comfortable at 0 or below. I have found my deep winter underquilt! I really enjoyed not having to place a pad under my legs. This is my 5th product from HG (3 top quilts and now 2 underquilts). The quality on this quilt and all of my others is is amazing! I highly recommend this underquilt if you want to hang in very cold weather. It would be easy to supplement with a full length pad and go well below zero.

My buddies told me to go with hammock gear because they were the best and I'm glad I did!! Best customer service around and best products!
by TheStinkyWeasel – 5th Dec 2013
Ordered a 0 degree Burrow and Underquilt together over the Thanksgiving holiday, received as soon as one could expect with holiday shipping- NO IDEA where they found the time to make this kit. And beautiful, warm fluffy kit it is.
Going to be 27 tonight, should be no problem for this setup. With a little trial and error I got it to fit snugly around my HH Expedition
ASYM TIP- Don't lay quite so diagonal - this is a big roomy taco that gives you space to stretch your limbs.
by Tony – 4th Dec 2013
A very great product! Very lightweight and easy to setup. You won't be disappointed with the warmth it provides when the temperature drops!
Totally worth the cost.

I'm a relatively new hanger, having owned and used a WBBB for the past 2 years or so. I've hung with it locally here in North Carolina, as well as in some pretty obscure places, like in Himachel Pradesh in the southern Himilayan Mountains. I. love. my. hammock.
I've been using the Warbonnet 3 season Yeti for most of my trips, but a recent trip with my sons for their Boy Scout outing pushed me to the lower limits of the Yeti - around 20-25 degrees. The following morning, with a weak 3G signal on my Samsung, I ordered this product with 4 extra ounces of extra stuffing.
What I love about it:
I love the overall quality. I'm a former design engineer for the sewn products industry - I designed equipment for industrial sewing machines and I've seen my fair share of sewn/stitched products commercially. When I got the Incubator, I immediately recognized the quality, and attention to detail in the construction of the UQ.
The materials are also wonderfully chosen. They have a nice 'hand', meaning, they feel soft against your skin when you run your hand across them. If you go into an REI or local sporting goods store, you won't find a material like this at an ENO rack.
The bias cuts are perfectly proportioned. There is more insulation up at your torso, and less towards your legs and feet where its less needed. The sides of the UQ also come up very high, past where you think you'd need them, so you immediately feel enveloped and warm.
What I didn't like:
There is a collection of elastic bands running both the length and width of the pad. The ones that run along your feet and head are in my opinion, too thin for what they do. They're 1/16" elastic, and should be thicker. I say this because the first night I used it, I thought I'd cinched it down enough but hadn't, allowing cool air to slip over the edge and cascade down into the channel below my back. This was solved relatively easily enough the next morning by cinching it completely down above my head, but again, to make it work, I'd maxed out the elastic of that 1/16" cordage.
Secondly, because this is a heavy UQ, (I ordered the extra 4oz) you can expect this UQ to hang heavy. This means the 2nd night you go to use it you'll realize what the size buckles along the length of the UQ are for....they're for running lines from one side of the UQ over your ridge line to the buckles on the opposite side to "pull up" the UQ and make it tight against your body. My friend, who'd purchased a 20 deg version of this UQ showed me the next night what he had built with some cordage and some 'beaners. For $300+ though, I think you should get 3 elastic line kits - which I went to a local sporting goods store and bought supplies for when I got back from my first trip.
I used a 4' section of 1/8" elastic cord cut into 3 equal lengths. I used a press-fit clip on used on kayaks, and then a small Nightize 'beaner on each end. Once applied, I took my new assembly and tested in the back yard on a night here in NC where it dropped into the mid-teens overnight. No cold pockets. If anything, I was sweating for a while until about 2,3AM.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending this product to anyone who was cold weather camping in their hammock. It's by far one of the best constructed pieces of equipment I own - better than my Marmot sleeping bag, in fact - so far as materials and construction go. If you cold weather camp, do not hesitate to purchase this - and get the extra down (splurge on yourself...your worth it).
I needed this for a trip, and Adam got it to me in time, also - which is consistent with what you've read above. This is a great guy - living in America, making quality products one at a time. If that's not enough to get you to buy it, you deserve to be cold at night.
I would ask that Adam look into making a Travel Hammock Sock like WBBB. I wanted to buy one of those too, and didn't see it on the website. If people are buying this UQ, they're likely to buy the travel sock as well, for cold weather excursions. If HG made one, I would have bought it, hands down.
Supplies to make the UQ support ties:
These are the ends I used on each of the cut 16" long x 1/8" elastic pieces:
These are the clips I used to connect the shock cords to the Incubator UQ:

I had my 0* UQ out in the teens with no real top quilt and I can say this product worked as advertised. I'll be ordering my top quilt through Hammock Gear as well.
The UQ is extremely easy to set up and adjust. The compression sack packs this down small as well. Just shove it in from one end, don't try rolling it up or folding it before.
by Greg – 5th Nov 2013
This is a great product, I couldn't believe just how light it is. It really did surprise me with the weight.
It is super super warm, I got the 0 model with mine a little longer, just wanted everything covered from past the head to my feet which it does.
My one and only fault with the product is the toggle tightners , there very very small and black which is very hard to see. One of mine broke the very 1st time I used it. So I replaced them with bigger ones , white which are stronger and easier to see .
I was a little disappointed with the toggle breaking strait away since the product costs a lot . But that's the only issue I had, I wouldnt hesitate to get more hammockgear stuff and everyone who is a hammock camper needs one of Adams underquilts .

Just got back from a quick overnight and this UQ worked great. I was toasty warm. Easy to set up. Quality is beautiful. Now I have to buy one for my wife.
by michael – 16th Aug 2013
This uq is amazing I know I will never second guess myself for buying this uq. I'm a former marine and know quality when I see it. This uq is something I will always use and know I can count on it to keep my but safe and warm. Every square inch of this screams quality and craftsmanship.

It's still summer so I haven't had a chance to actually test out my 0* incubator, but its my 3rd HG quilt and can say it's a work of art. As usual they are a pleasure to deal with, answering emails and questions right away and working very closely with your needs. I can't recommend them enough! If you're on the fence at all just buy one thing from them and you'll be a repeat customer, I promise.
by Dave – 12th Jul 2013
This thing is simply amazing. I was debating getting a therma rest pad for my hammock and decided to go with an underquilt, because I knew if eventually get one anyways. It did take a while for it to arrive but I wasn't in any hurry so it wasn't a big deal for me. I've tested it a few nights down to about the high 30s and it literally feels like there's a heated blanket underneath me. I did find a pin that was stuck on the inside of the bag that stuck out, but I think that just goes to show how it's truly hand made. I was able to cut the pin so it wouldn't poke through anymore and I'm glad I didn't get poked! All in all this is a GREAT quilt and is exceptionally warm and extraordinarily well constructed and built. I would buy this again in a heartbeat and have already recommended it to my friends! Thanks guys!

I am soon to be 74 and my brother is soon to be 76 - we backpack up a canyon trail and this quilt is just what we need to keep us warm in our hammocks. We learned about them by seeing young guys camped in our spot in the snow with these Hammock quilts. Old bones need extra warmth and we are just delighted to find something as nice as these quilts.

Ordered this just before Christmas when they were in a sewing frenzy trying to get all of their orders complete for the holidays. I needed it for a trip we had scheduled 1st wknd in Jan. Called to see if it was possible to get it in time. Adam (Stormcrow), the owner, answers the phone and tells me that he will overnight the UQ as that'd be the only way I'd have it in time to have a chance to dial it in before my trip. No extra charge, in fact he never charged me anything for shipping what so ever! Who/what co. does that?? Small companies dedicated to their customers and who understand and care about outdoor recreation; that's who!
I get the UQ in time to dial it in and see that there's no need for time to dial it in. It is so well engineered with the double suspension and how it hugs the hammock that all we need to do is put it on and tighten the shock cords. So far I've used it on 2 trips; lows in low teens, winds up to 40mph one night, and I was toasty warm!! -EQU: 0 degree incubator, 15 degree big agnes lost ranger bag without any pad under me (so no insulation at all under me except UQ), warbonnet black bird with hammock sock. I wore a thin fleece pants and long shirt set and was oh so comfy! Even had to open up the sleeping bag to vent when in the high teens and never had to zip it all the way mummifying myself.
Do your research; read the other reviews, and I'll bet you won't find an equal to this UQ for the same or less $$ much less with a co. who actually cares about their customers and will bend over backward to try to get you what you need when you need it! Stay awesome Stormcrow!
by Bosman – 29th Jan 2013
I ordered this for my first winter backpack trip. The materials are excellent and the stitching top notch. Of course i tried things out before heading out. This thing hugs a hammock so beautifully. I went with the zero because when it comes to winter activities it is best to over do it on insulation than come up short. Adam is very friendly and accommodated me for my trip. I researched many under quilts and found this design and his service to be a good fit. I plan to order more products from him and have been spreading the word. I did not get the overstuff option but figured it would loft and puff out a ton but it isn't super lofty like my feathered friends bag. If you want that effect then overstuff option is something i recommend but not needed.

Had this out in 22 deg weather and felt not a single draft or cold spot. Love it and so will my wife when she gets to use it. I could have easily gone with the 20 deg if it was just for myself. Great communication and wonderful customer service. Will definitely order from hammockgear again,
by Dyehard – 14th Jan 2013
This is my second Hammock Gear quilt. The craftsmanship and customer service is second to none. My 0 degree Incubator is by far my favorite piece of gear, I'm a cold sleeper but this thing keeps me toasty and warm all night.

I just started camping again two years ago after a twenty five year break . I wasnt sure at 40 I would be able to start where I had left off but then a friend of mine turned me on to the hammock. I watched Shug's videos and learned about the underquilt and here we are!I have used this UQ in 0 degrees 40 degrees 19 degrees and on christmas eve my wife and I slept outside and waited for Santa and got 6 inches of snow dropped on us (thanks Santa)! I love this quilt !!! I haven't found a condition yet that it hasn't worked for.I used this all summer too!It doesn't make you hot it just cuts the draft. I've considered getting a warmer weather version but i don't really need to except to cut weight . However this one is so light it isn't even an issue. Everyone I know says Im nuts for winter camping and don't believe me when i say i wake up hot!! Thank you so much! again I love this underquilt!!!

Got in on your Black Friday sale. First night out with it last night, 28 degrees, felt like I was sleeping on an electric blanket. I figure my "working temp" will be around 20 plus wiggle room, this is definitely the ticket. Thought you may have sent the wrong one, it was so small and light! The craftsmanship gives me not only American pride but Ohio pride! Hope you celebrate Black Friday next year, I want a burrow!
by Chad Webster (blaktee) – 14th Dec 2012
This UQ is nothing short of amazing!!! I have had it down to the low teens several times now and was crazy warm, This baby can easily go below 0. It almost feels like you have a heat blanket underneath you. My wife is a skeptic and she was so impressed she let me order another one for my son. Now we have two, and I think she is staking claim on my sons. The suspension is really easy to set up and the quality is 2nd to none. I wanted mine in red...and Adam worked with me on the phone to get the right material over to him . Now that is service, really beyond the mark of 5 star!! If you are looking for an amazing UQ that looks good and functions better than it looks, than this is the UQ for you!
by Mugen – 13th Dec 2012
Super warm under quilt! The adjustments are so easy to figure out and simple to put on or take off. I store it inside my hammock during the day then just toss it back over at night. Rings on edges combined with some shock cord make for a tight UQ on a stormy super cold night. I can use it almost any temp below 60-65 and be comfortable by adjusting the suspension. Great all around product!
by Sunshower – 26th Nov 2012
I got this as a gift this March and taken it as high as 65 and as low as 20 so far this year and have been toasty warm. I used to camp in tents and woke up half-way through the night freezing, but since converting to hammocks and this quilt I never do. It weighs less than my 20deg down sleeping bag and comes with a stuff sack. It is easy to set up on the hammock line and you can adjust it to allow for cooling off in the warmer months. I live in New England and this is the quilt for me.

If the trail still calls to you even after the leaves drop then this is your new friend. After a quick conversation with Adam, explaining my upcoming trip and my want for a lighter shell option, I was sent a custom Under Quilt that I couldn't be happier with. Not only did he consider my needs while adding some of his expertise, but he was able to get it to me on time during their busiest time of year. I can't say enough about the service from Hammock Gear !
