Hammock Gear Under Quilts
Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".
Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.
All quilts are made to order. Please inquire with email@example.com for current lead times.
About the Incubator 0˚
The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort... The Standard length Incubator 0° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 2". With premium quality, water resistaint, 850 fill power goose down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 0°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock all year around, you have found it.
The Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down. This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm. The Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system and a stuff sack.
Under Quilt Advantages
Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of goose down under quilts. To summarize:
|Fill Weight||15.0 oz||16.0 oz||17.0 oz|
|Total Weight||24.9 oz||26.4 oz||27.71 oz|
We utilize the finest 850 fill power, water-resistant goose down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.
All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.
All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.
At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

I must first say that I am just a customer making an honest review. I first purchased a Mt. Washington 3 from Jacksrbetter and was thoroughly disappointed. Their design is flawed. The direction of their baffles allow gravity to pull the "down" down away from ur shoulders and arms leaving those parts exposed to the outside temperature. Buyer beware of that and their return policy (It's not consumer friendly and expensive to return).
Now for the Incubator 0. Honestly, everything from the stitching to the baffles to the speed which I received the underquilt is and should be a benchmark for all in the industry. It only took 5 days to receive my underquilt but I also live in Ohio which is only a few hours away. I was wanting a zero degree underquilt for cold weather applications but afraid of it being too warm for the summer. This quilt is perfect for 4 seasons no doubt. This summer I tested it with both ends open to allow more airflow and slept perfectly in a 87 degree evening. If you are in the market for an underquilt, don't make the mistake I did with Jacksrbetter. Save your time and money and get it from hammock gear. You will not be disappointed! Hope this helps! Now get out in those woods and sleep well!
Thanks again Hammock Gear! You guys rock!

As winter never really ends here in the high country of Colorado I needed high quality gear to keep up with the low temps! It took 3weeks to recieve this puppy! Not bad! And I've take. It out 3times since then. With the coldest night only dipping to 30 or so. However I was snug as a bug in a rug. And experienced optimal warmth. This underquilt is easy to adjust to eliminate gaps and packs down small. Thanks HG you have earned a lifetime customer!

This UQ kept me warm on my 5 night trip with some chilly nights with continuous rain. I couldn't ask for a better product!
by Dave – 10th May 2016
When I first got it, I thought it was going to be too bulky, but being down it compressed just fine to a manageable size. No problems at all. Compared to my DYI insultex quilt it is more compressable and stays in place better as I move around in my Blackbird. Great customer service.

I do a lot of late fall and winter camping in the Northwest and needed something that was going to be able to keep up with those cold nights.
This does the trick.
The build quality is top notch, it packs down small, and it keeps me warm.
If you're facing any nights where the temp goes to 0-degrees while in a hammock, this is the go-to option to ensure you don't wake up with hypothermia.

Got the Incubator 0 with an Oz of Over Stuff for my Fiance becuase she is a cold sleeper and I wanted to make sure she would stay warm and continue to come Hammock Camping with me. Needless to Say She now says this is the ONLY way she wants to camp now! Even though it is Her Quilt it is My Favorite piece of gear! Thank you For your Amazing Product and Customer Service! As a lot of the other reviews mentioned I ordered this Quilt a little late for the Spring MAHHA, but They were amazing and made sure I had it in time!!
by Bigfoot – 25th Apr 2016
Well i ordered a blue one and asked for it just before mahha, a massive group of hammockers. Well Adam delivered and this quilt is so warm that i did without a top quilt down to 40 degrees. And it works flawlessly. Thanks again adam.

Can't really compare to others UQs but this worked great for me. Had a friend that also has an HG 10 incubator help me set it up and it worked perfectly. HG delivered my order quickly which allowed us to make a 3 day hike with some friends. Surprised at how little adjustment it took to get a good fit.

I haven't been able to go on a winter hang yet, but the quality and workmanship on the two (2) incubator underquilts I orderd for myself and my son was top notch. I will write a review after I get a chance to do a winter hang. I have all the confadence in the world I will not be disapointed based on the quality of these underquilts. Thanks Hammock Gear for producing such a first class product and filling the order quicker than expected.

I ordered this early February for a hang the first weekend in March. The gang at HG came through with my 0 degree incubator in record time. Wow, what a quality product. With the wind chill, the temperature dropped well below freezing and I was nice and toasty in my hammock. Now I'm saving up for a HG top quilt purchase.
by mike – 22nd Feb 2016
Worth every penny! My first winter camp we got a foot of snow and then the temp dropped to -15 with windchill. I used this with a 20 degree bag and I slept like a baby. I have used this about 5 or 6 times now and love it. Outstanding products and customer service. Everyone I know who winter camps has one of these.

Awesome underquilt it exceded my expectations. And the customer service is top notch
by Nick Kunstler – 3rd Feb 2016
I haven't fully tested my incubator 0 yet! I have spent one night on on my patio with an overnight low 34(well above the UQ's rating) and felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. The craftsmanship is first rate and the customer service is fantastic. Remember these are made to order, but mine only took two and a half weeks to ship during Christmas time. Well worth the wait, I'm excited to order more from hammock gear!
by Carlos – 27th Jan 2016
Got a chance to try it out in the hoosier national forest, the temperature swung from 50 during the day to low teens and single digits with wind chill at night. A rain/snow storm moved in at night as the temp started dropping, I had my tarp in porch mode and woke to freezing rain hitting my face. I should add we were atop of a windy ridge. I brought the tarp down closed the doors just to have the stakes pulled out and tarp bashed around by wind. Needless to say the underquilt did get wet but to my surprise it wicked the rain and remained dry ! By morning my tarp was covered in ice and snow but the Incubator did keep me warm the whole night. This piece of gear gives me peace of mind when I know the weather is going to be harsh and even if the temps are higher it has a great ventilating system, just loosen the shock cord via cordlock. Things I like most about the Incubator would be baffle design and the way it contours to your body, the fabric is awesome and the extra tie out points to pull it up closer to hammock is something you don't see on other quilts, and of course the high loft. It was well worth it and I'll be back at some point for a top quilt. Hat's off to the Hammockgear team!

Just ordered my 3rd 0 degree Incubator to complete what I need for my family. Great product .. You will NOT be let down by their performance and quality. Just what you would expect from a cottage industry like HG.. Why not 5 stars? --No directions or guidance on how to properly set it up on your hammock as far as the primary suspension and the secondary suspension, plus, how they interact with each other..
by Joe Sisson – 20th Jan 2016
I am not new to hammock hiking, but am new to doing it in the winter. I am hiking the Sheltowee trail with a team of hikers this year, and they all use Hammock Gear products. I purchased the incubator 0 and spent two nights out in it with the low at 27 degrees. I have a 20 degree HG over quilt on top, and woke up at 1:38am to shed the fleece I went to sleep in. I can't recommend their product any better then to say " It just works".
by Chris Emmons – 20th Jan 2016
I cannot describe how incredibly warm the Incubator 0 is under your hammock. The quality and attention to detail is top notch. I would highly recommend Hammock Gear to friends. Great quality, service and their products perform exactly like they say. I am very satisfied.
by Steve – 19th Jan 2016
I purchased the 0 degree burrow and incubator both with 4oz of overfill which, going by the stuffing on the various quilts, should bring the rating down to about -10 degrees. I tested them last night at +10 degrees F and was just hot enough to worry about sweating. I was dressed only in a medium weight wool baselayer and winter wool socks. No pants, shirt, sweater, etc. Only a fleece balaclava and knit cap for my head. I am considerable cooler in my bed under a blanket with the house thermostat set at 71 degrees.
I am very satisfied with the quality. All the material and stitching looks great.
by Keith (Trail Medic) – 4th Jan 2016
I was advised by Warnonett that the Incubator was the best full length Underquilt for the WBBB XLC. So, that's what I went with. Out of the box the quality of craftsmanship is clear. It is top notch!
I set up my XLC out front and the Incubator fit like a glove.
Next came the sleep test. It only got down to 28 degrees, but there were no cold spots.
I'll know more in a couple of weeks after the "Hoosier Winter Hang". So check out my field review on the Trail Medic channel on YouTube for more information on this great product.

It's been great not having to wiggle into a sleeping bag on top of a Thermarest.
by Traditional Yooper. – 25th Dec 2015
Did one night out near Marquette MI. Temps dropped to about 20 degrees F. I was toasty warm. I am looking to really give it a test when we start dropping into the negatives. Thanks again guys! You make some amazing underquilt and camping gear. Highly recommended.
by Tim – 23rd Dec 2015
At first I was somewhat hesitant to purchase the product because I knew virtually nothing about under quilts. It represented a sizable investment and I just wasn't sure how effective the product would be. Boy was I pleasantly surprised!
First I did my research, which lead me here to Hammock Gear. Every review I read made me realize that the Incubator 0 was the product I was looking for.
I decided to contact HG to ask some questions and discovered that they were literally located right down the road from me. I was welcomed into their factory and Harry took me around, showed me the product, and answered virtually every question I could muster. He and all the other folks at HG were extremely friendly and helpful. They not only provided me with helpful information about their product, but were very generous with tips and helpful advice about hammock camping in general. I placed my order and left there very confident in my purchase decision.
My quilt was finished and ready far sooner than I had expected. Harry helped me get my quilt "dialed in" and showed me all of the benefits of my new quilt.
I took my quilt out on its "maiden voyage" on a night that never got above the mid 20's, and boy was I impressed. There was snow on the ground and an icy chill in the air, but I stayed completely warm and toasty in my Incubator 0! I was shocked at how comfortable I stayed. I couldn't feel better about my purchase.
I am really excited for the cold weather of late January and February to kick in. I know I will sleep warmly in the comfort of my HG Incubator 0. A great product with a great group of people behind it.... Thanks HG!

I saved my pennies for a long time, read a lot of reviews and finally made my purchase over the summer. Got my first chance to use it on a windy October camporee night that went into the high 20's. Was very warm and comfortable. Camped out again in November, again a breezy night where temps dropped into the teens - still very comfortable. Looking forward to January and February campouts!

Beautifully made, warm and many adjustments. Could not imagine it being any better.

Excellent product. Top shelf business. Can't ask for anything more except a top quilt when I get the funds.
by MaineHanger – 2nd Nov 2015
It was a tight spot, trip coming up; needed a quality quilt to be warm...HG came through in SPADES! Going to be warm, truly warm, for the first time hanging in Maine!

This is an incredible piece of gear, I think I found a place to keep my money flowing to, and keep me in the woods longer being Happy.

My husband and I are beyond pleased with our Incubator 0 underquilts! We used them a few nights in the forest already and they fit and functioned perfectly!
I ordered them Oct 6, 2015, and they shipped them USPS Priority mail on Oct 14. We had them in plenty time for our Oct 21 deadline for leaving on our trip (thank you!!).
I proudly showed them to a friend who is a professional seamstress, and she basically dropped her jaw in amazement as she examined them.
Thank you, Hammock Gear!!
by Bob Medows – 22nd Oct 2015
Amazingly warm and great design. Adjustability is super. I cannot believe something this light has so much loft. I am seriously looking at a Burrow 0 next year.
by White – 19th Oct 2015
Used on the AT/LT in Vermont and was astounded as to the ease of setup and the ability to keep out the cold. No more CBS for me!
by Joe – 8th Oct 2015
After speaking to Harry about the particularly cold weather we experience in my A.O. He informed me that he could adjust a 0* incubator to withstand -20*.
I have yet to push the quilt to those temps, but I have brought it down to about 20* so far and have stayed quite toasty!
The quilt works about as well as a full size quilt can with my asymmetrical warbonnet blackbird XLC and is a breeze to setup.
To top the cake I got my quilt less than a week after placing the order.
Between the excellent customer service, quality and craftsmanship of the product I couldn't be happier.
If you're on the fence....Buy it.

I had the chance to test my incubator last week. Snow sleet wind and rain , 6 days in the Alpine national park ,warm as toast, I didn't zip up my sleeping bag the whole trip. My mates curled up in their bivvy bags could only look up with envy . Great piece of gear. Mick Talbot , Australia.

This is my second incubator 0. My son is now into scouting and loves his hammock and his underquilt. The quality is superb and the customer support makes the decision a no-brainer. I use this quilt if the temps will be lower than 65 and have been warm down to 19 degrees and have not doubt it could keep me warm lower. My 11 year old was able to figure the quilt out on his own and had it hooked up perfectly on his first attempt. Simply an amazing product and company. Thanks again hammockgear!
by Terry F. – 22nd Sep 2015
Beautiful workmanship and the warmth...oh my, you hate to get out of the hammock on cool/cold mornings.
by Al – 10th Aug 2015
Just took my Incubator 0 out for a test run for a night on the Long Trail. Warmest night I ever spent in my hammock.
42 degrees that night. Never put a blanket over me until about 4. Great quality and pretty simple to use. Can't wait to get my top quilt and having fun this winter.
by Greg N. – 25th Jul 2015
I just received my UQ and I am very happy with the purchase. It looks very well made. Since it's the Summer, I won't put it to the test for a few months, but I was surprised at how quickly it arrived and can't wait to try it out.

A well made top quality piece of kit, can't wait to get out and try it .

Experience: 10-15 nights in the backyard at temps ranging from 10degrees to 70 degrees; 8 nights in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (Northern MN); temps ranged from 45 to 55 at night.
After experiencing night-time temperature fluctuations while on a previous camping trip (55 to 30 swing), my summer underquilt did not keep me warm. I opted for the zero degree since my summer underquilt does fine at temps to 50 degrees; this was to be my back-up or my underquilt for all other seasons. Stayed warm at 10 degrees (although I needed to run paracord to help snug up the UQ to my backside. Additionally, worked great at tempts as high as 50 degrees. At this range the underquilt needed no 'dialing' in and I could simply vent it if I was too hot. In these warmer temps, I paid no attention to careful tarp placements and wind blocks and remained extremely comfortable. I set up my hammock on an extremely windy peninsula and stayed warm despite the constant wind.
Love the primary and secondary suspension set up. Allowed for easy adjustment to my Warbonnet Blackbird.
Finally, in the warmer temps of 50 degrees +, I loved having this warmer underquilt. I didn't even need to have my topquilt over me and slept comfortably. Great nights sleep.
by jimmy – 26th May 2015
set up my Incubator right out of the box. Very simple to attach too my hammock (Hennessy Deep Jungle XL). Fit naturally and was so comfortable, that I dozed off for a quick nap. The suspension allows easy adjustments Thor tweaking the fit. Quality of construction is great.
by Shawn – 20th May 2015
I used my Incubator 0 for the first time a few days after receiving it. I took it with me on a trip up to the Catskills for two nights where the temperatures dropped down into the mid-40s each night. I never felt even chilly once... Quite opposite actually. At one point on the first night, I actually unzipped my bag and got down to my t-shirt. The form and fit of the quilt is flawless. At different points during the night after moving around in my hammock doing the “sleeping bag shuffle” I'd feel over the edge certain that the quilt had shifted or moved because of my adjusting, but sure enough it was right where it should be, hugging me in a quilt of warmth. For warmer temperature nights like that you can draw open the ends of quilt to allow for a little more relaxed fit, and that seems to do the trick.
It also compresses down nicely into your pack as well. I was able to fit mine into a size small Sea to Summit dry compression sack. After getting it into the sack, and rolling closed the lid about three times, I was then able to compress it down even further. The Incubator 0 degree quilt WINS on all fronts!! Nice work to Hammock Gear, I will definitely be getting more products (like a top quilt!) from them in the future.
by Unknown – 6th May 2015
I brought the incubator 0 on my last trip and lived it. It was 15 degrees at night and i was nice and warm with the incubator. The customer service was great too. I ordered it right before my trip and they were able to get it to me within a week.
by David Haden – 3rd May 2015
I have used my Incubator 0 in (what some would consider) extreme conditions. I live in Colorado and only just took up hammock camping a few years ago. I have used this underquilt at 10,000+ foot elevations and never once got cold. But you can read a lot of good reviews about the product all over this page. I want to focus on another subject...
I recently had to send my Incubator 0 back to Hammock Gear for a minor repair job (small hole - completely my fault). The level of customer service I received was excellent!!!!! From letting me know that they had received it, to the completion of the work requested, to shipping it back to me with a tracking number... they kept me informed through the entire process and I never had to wonder what was going on. Thanks guys and gals for the GREAT job!
by Stephen – 29th Apr 2015
This far exceeded my expectations. The first weekend after receiving the Incubator 0, we went on an overnight trip. The next morning it was 2 degrees. No issues at all. I did not want to get out of bed. I wanted to try it in warmer weather before I submitted this review.
I just returned from turkey hunting where it was between 55 & 62 each night. I used the Incubator 0 each night and did not get hot. I did not draw the ends and slept very comfortable with a poncho liner for my top quilt.
Hats off to Adam and his team for the quality products they produce. I just received notice my Burrow 0 has shipped. I cannot wait for cooler weather to give this a try. I have a setup that will take me 4 seasons.
You will not be disappointed with the quality of the performance.
by jon – 22nd Apr 2015
Used on nylon hammock. I got standard size and it fits me perfectly. I'm 5'7. I used it in Colorado at 8k feet April 2015. First time I've ever been able to sleep naked in my cheap bag having this incubator under me. I used two Oz overstuffed. Absolutely amazing quality. Packs down a lot for backpacking and when I have it left out hanging for storage it puffs out and is nice and lofty.
very happy to not use my pad anymore under me while hammocking. Warmer and much more comfortable.
by Bill – 19th Apr 2015
Super lightweight, easy to set up and great quality. Kept me very warm in my hammock. I have the 0 bag but will be buying a lighter for the fall
by Jan – 15th Apr 2015
As a newbie hammock camper, I couldn't have asked for a better underquilt to start my adventures. I was amazed at how well it fit right out of the box, without me having to fiddle with the suspension. It's also super warm! I'm looking forward to getting a lot more Hammock Gear stuff.
by Unknown – 2nd Apr 2015
This is a high quality and well designed piece of kit. I look forward to testing its limits in colder weather but for now I am using it warmer temps.

Amazing Woodland Camo - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz) Material, Never felt gear so light before. I ordered the 0 dF incubator with 2 oz overfill. With the Spring officially here I was only able to test it down to 15 dF. With the Incubator and my Burrows 0 dF I was too hot. I'll have to wait until late fall /winter to see the real temps it was made for but I have full confidence I will be warm. My 0 dF rated mummy bag can not compete to the warmth from the Burrows TQ & Incubator UQ. I'm hooked on this sleep setup so as soon as I can I'm going to get a 40 dF set. Thanks Hammock Gear for the great sleep setup..
by Jerrett Shephard – 15th Mar 2015
I've only taken this on a few trips now, but none of which were above 20*F. Absolutely awesome!!! Super easy setup and adjusting it couldn't be more simple. The coldest night got to -10, didn't get cold once! (To be fair I have a pretty awesome sleeping bag, but until this quilt, hammock camping was reserved for 3 seasons. No longer!) Couldn't ask for better quality. This is the first underquilt I've owned and it seems to have what it takes to be my last! Can't wait to try the top quilt!
by Danimal – 13th Mar 2015
Got the Incubator 0 for my girlfriend and she loves it of course. It kept her toasty warm and made a recent camping hiking trip ten times better.I suggest you select different colors for inside and out as Adam had suggested to me once to help make orienting easy as possible on those cold dark nights.
by ThePantologist – 6th Mar 2015
This product was clearly made by people who really care about the quality. There isn't a stitch out of place! It was absolutely worth every penny!
by Robert Grillo – 6th Mar 2015
I bought a 0 degree incubator with 1 oz. Of over stuff and the first night I slept in it, it got down to -15 degrees and I felt like I was sleeping in a heated home! I highly recommend this product thanks hammock gear!
by Daniel Harding – 28th Feb 2015
I read a lot of reviews and watched people's videos before I committed to spending the money on my Incubator, everyone said how awesome they are, that's why I purchased one. All I can say is what everyone else already has, you're products are only overmatched by your amazing customer service! I can't wait to get one of your top quilts as soon as I save up the funds! Greatest purchase since I got my hammock!! Thank you all!!
by phoenixcustoms – 12th Feb 2015
I can rave all day about this quilt and it still won't do it the justice it deserves. Just buy it and you'll love it too.
by C A May – 11th Feb 2015
First of all, when I called to order my underquilt on a Tuesday, Adam asked if I needed it by a certain time. I told him I was going to a group hang on Friday but I wasn't expecting it to be here that quickly. I ordered it with extra fill and it came on Thursday! I took it to Merchants Mill Pond State Park for the Frosty Butt Hang on Friday. The temperature got down to 22 degrees. The only regret I had was that I didn't go ahead and order a topquilt!. It totally surrounded the underside of my hammock and kept me plenty warm. I never had to adjust it during the night. Awesome product, awesome customer service! Get one!
by John Walkington – 10th Feb 2015
Just received my second Incubator and even as a return customer i'm very impressed. Looking forward to taking it down to -12F this weekend, I'm sure she'll hold up just fine. Anyone buying any of the products sold by HG will not be disappointed. A great company owned and operated by two people who go above and beyond.
by Michael Deren – 6th Feb 2015
I personally love this quilt! It keeps me really warm without sacrificing the weight of bringing a lot of stuffing for when i go hiking. Some people say it is a little to expensive and hesitate or dont even buy it, but when you receive this quilt you will quickly realize why you paid what you did. It is nothing like machine crafted items. It is flawless and wonderful craftsmanship. If you dont buy this, for your hammock, you will end up paying the same amount if not more for other stuff that you have to keep on buying due to it not being reliable. Dont miss out on this item, that is all i can say!
by Unknown – 29th Jan 2015
This is my third underquilt from hammockgear and as always top quality and service. They are my go to for quilts and tarps! Thanks again hammockgear!
by Shemanese from Ohio – 28th Jan 2015
I used this hammock underquilt on our 2015 late January Frozen Butt hang. Slept through the night. Great service. Solid product. If you want to extend your hammock season into the colder months this piece of gear makes a frozen butt a thing of the past. Worth the expense.

Took this Incubator 0 out for it's maiden backpacking adventure - the temps only got down to 15. My water bottle froze and so did my camelbak.. but there I was, relaxing all toasty warm! I took off my wool socks and my hat too. just laid there snug as a bug in my long-johns. This Underquilt kept me so warm I was amazed. Easy to adjust and get correct hang for my setup. I can't say enough about the quality and workmanship either.
All in all.. a quilt far exceeding my expectations and well worth every dollar spent. Get one and stop reading reviews. LOL

The overall customer service is phenomenal after I received my product I used it on a weekend hiking trip and it lived up to everything It was supposed to. Hammock gear makes one heck of a product and I recommend it to all.

Many other businesses could learn from this company!
I placed an order for an Incubator 0 with this company over the weekend during the holidays. I had a few questions, as all customers do, about the product so I called and spoke to Adam. I could tell from the first few seconds of our conversation that he not only knew all there was to know about his product line but that also his positive attitude was that of someone that I would enjoy being around. He answered all of my questions and then some, including tips on how to use it that I might not pick up on my own. We discussed manufacturing times, as I understand it every item is made to order, because I had an upcoming trip and wanted to make sure it would arrive in time. As the date of my trip was nearing I hadn't received any updates as to the status of my order or the shipping which led me to call again. However unfortunately I was greated with an answering machine this time. Not to worry though because in the message there was an email address for an alternative means of contact. Of course, I emailed. My brief email was responded to within one business day much to my surprise, especially in a day and age where customer emails are most often responded to within 7 to 10 business days if they're even replied to at all. Before I received the reply to my email though I was able to speak to Adam again. We discussed my the manufacturing and shipping times of my order and he let me know that it had already been completed as well as he would ensure the shipping would be upgraded at no cost to me in order to meet my departure date. I received the automated email a few days later informing me that my Incubator 0 had shipped but... Oh no! It shipped out via Priority USPS vs. the expedited FEDEX we discussed. I immediately called, and spoke to Adam again, he must sleep with that phone or something! Upon discovering what had transpired he offered to overnight an almost identical product, differing only in the color of material, to me. Again at no additional cost! He actually trusted me to do the honorable thing and return which ever Incubator 0 I liked less. All I can say at this point is wow. He was not only extremely apologetic about what had taken place but was willing to trust that someone he'd never even met before with almost $300 worth of merchandise in order to not have an unhappy customer! I haven't even received my order yet and can already tell you that I will be a repeat customer. Businesses just don't value their customers like this anymore. Adam and his team might not have met this deadline but, they have earned a loyal customer and as many referrals I can give them! I might also add that it was a deadline that was pushed up after the fact without consideration for the manufacturing time line. I'm sure I will update this with a review once I'm able to enjoy my much anticipated Incubator 0! Many thanks to the crew at Hammockgear.com

I was recently given this quilt as a gift and my oh my, what a great gift it was! Previously I had only used pads in my hammock but the true comfort and freedom of a hammock is lost with pads. So far I've only used the Incubator 0 for a few nights in the 20s but the experience has been awesome! It felt like I was sleeping on a bunch of hand warmers but without the odd lumpiness that would entail. It is such a nice feeling to wake up perfectly warm when everything else is frosty. The underquilt is very simple to use and adjust and the quality is amazing. If you have the cash, both these things should justify the price as compared to other underquilts on the market. I highly recommend it and look forward to using it more in the future! Happy Trails.

Wonderful piece of equipment. Great design to fit to the contour of your body. Great quality item. I'm waiting on some nasty weather to really test it. It's been real toasty down to 16*.
I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Great people, great quality, great product!!!! Buy American First Quality Hand-made Goods.

I'm a petite woman and usually sleep very cold-- I typically use my 32* bag all summer long. I switched from tent to hammock this year and bought an incubator 40 and 0 (2 oz over fill). Man, these things are warm! I've hung in temps in the 30's with the 40* and only had to drape my sleeping bag around my shoulders. Combine the warmth of the UQ with the comfort of a hammock and I was in camping heaven. I took the 0* out in single digits and slept cozy with just down pants and jacket with the sleeping bag only half over me and was glad for a slight breeze. (Previous reviewers are correct in that the overstuffed 0 hangs low and needs extra support to close all the gaps.) I could never achieve that level of comfort and warmth in a tent without carrying twice the weight in gear. Based on the performance of the UQ, I sold my -20 sleeping bag (4+ lbs) and ordered a Burrow 0 (1+ lbs). I'm super confident I'll be comfortable and safe all winter long and gear of this quality will last for years. Thanks Hammock Gear!
PS: Shug is correct--breakfast in the hammock wrapped in downy warmth is heavenly. Especially when watching your tent using hiking buddy try to get comfortable sitting in the snow with his!

Great underquilt. Love the included adjustable components. I first used it for a week on the SHTA at the end of Nov. The temps started in the 30's and got as low as -13 with 35mi/hr wind. I used it with my SD +12 degree bag and z-rest, and all of my close for the -13 with wind night. That was my threshold. The underquilt was a must. For winter hammock camping. It was worth the money, especially compared to my friends other brands.
Enjoy the world!

Took this underquilt out the day after Thanksgiving for a Boy Scout trip and was blown away. It was about 20 degrees overnight and I stayed warm and comfortable. I was wearing a base layer (Columbia) and only my feet were cold. I suspect I just need to hang the quilt more toward my feet and it would have been fine. Otherwise, no cold spots at all! The build quality is superb and the the turnaround was less than a week! I recommend this product without reservation and am confident I would have been warm at even colder temps. Setup was intuitive and quick. Like I said, the only change I will make in the future is hanging it further down on the foot side. Excellent product and first class customer support.

This is the seconf underquilt I buy form Hammock gear and I also own a quilt as well. I have not had a chance to use it yet but can see that it is as weel made as the other 2 I own from them.
Compared to other products I own you can see the craftsmanship is superior and well thought out.

After trying so many underquilts, my search is finally over. For the first time I have found a UQ that actually works great in a wbbb xlc. The incubator is the best!

What more can I say that hasn't been said before, Quality is outstanding, customer service is also outstanding. I got it back in July but am just now getting to use it .
Used it for three nights lows in the mid 20's and winds about 15-20 mph. It worked so well that I had to remove my top quilt several times in the night to cool down.
Keep up the great work there and you have a customer for life. Thanks

Wind chills were in the single digits and I was snug as a bug. Construction is studry but lightweight, and underquilt packs up very small. I use a Yukon outfitters 11-foot hammock and a brooks range 30-degree sleeping bag as a top quilt. For warmer weather camping I plan to vent the quilt to avoid overheating. For now, bring on the cold!!

Ready to go out of the box. Took my Incubator 0 out the day I got it for a 35 deg test run and couldn't be more impressed. It is SUPER warm!! Definitely worth the wait, the quality of this product is 2nd to none.

I love my incubator. I am often cold so bought the warmest one I could find, and have found my self toasty (and sometimes hot) using it. It's incredible, and the folks at Hammock Gear are great to work with!

So far iv had my uq for a couple weeks and iv slept in my hammock as much as possible, I can honestly say that I have not been cold at all since. I actually slept in my hammock in 60 degree weather and I didn't have anything else, and I was smoldering! Drenched in sweat and somewhat uncomfortable, this was somewhat my own fault due to having my mosquito netting down and the too totally closed up. But yeah, awesome product, people were not kidding when they say you can actually feel the heat almost immediately, like the uq has it's own heat source or something. I am super happy and I can't wait till winter. Thanks hammockgear!

The gear you get from hammock gear is hands down the best, most well made gear you can get for your roughest conditions. There product quality is unmatched and they work very hard at making sure your order is to spec and fits your needs. Thank you for a fantastic underquilt and a great experience. I recommend these sellers.

I'm amazed it's so lightweight. It pack's down very small. It's a work of art. Now I just need to buy the "Incubator 40" & the "Burrow 40" & my ultralight gear will be completed..

I really can't find the right words to describe how I feel about this fabulous under quilt! I have only actually used it once, but I can tell you that I am looking forward to many more nights of pure cozy down heaven! It is so fluffy and warm!
So last week I finally got out to the woods to try out my new gear! I went alone, which was ok with me, and I took my time getting everything set up. As I was sleeping, I woke up because my shoulder was cold. I unzipped my bug net, felt beneath my hammock, and discovered that the quilt had slipped a bit. (I'll take credit for that. It was my first set up and I tend to toss and turn a bit) I just moved it back into place, zipped back up and voila! I was instantly toasty warm! I don't have a top quilt yet, but will be ordering a burrow soon! I just used a light sleeping bag that I unzipped this time. Maybe a couple of different top quilts!

Great Product. keeps you nice and toasty while sleeping or longing around in your hammock. Light weight so was easy to use on a backpacking trip. Highly recommend this for all hammock people

unfortunately, I had broken my clavicle and 6 ribs on my back in a bicycle accident. I had just received my under quilt about a week or two before, and I was waiting for a very cold night, of which none had come. to make up for it, this is my third night out in my backyard with this under quilt and it has been 30- 40 degrees these nights.
I have a down coat on and a 30 Degree Monte Belle bag just draped over me, and even midway through the night I am Not really covered over. this underquilt is phenomenal! I can't wait until next winter time.

I have yet to get a chance to try the incubator in temps below 35 so far but am really looking forward to it this coming winter and am certain if its anything as warm as it is at 35 when its 15 I will sleep like a baby. I have been able to test the treated down though in temps ranging from high thirties to low fourty degrees and constant down pour of rain for two days straight and can tell you that even with such high humidity the down never lost its insulative ability to retain its warmth and was very pleased with that and the amount of adjustability to the suspension provided by hammock gear I could not think of a better piece of gear to bring along on winter trips to keep me warm at night. so far I am very happy with the new purchase and look forward to years of use on my adventures. two thumbs up hammock gear team!

great construction, very warm with lots of loft, and very packable... Couldn't ask for more so far.

This under quilt is amazing. I bought a 0 degree with two extra oz. It fight perfect on my Hennessey , you can feel the heat instantly after you lay down. If your on the fence about buying one just do it. It is worth every penny. Very well made, not one loose thread. Thank you very much hammockgear.

I love this thing. Very,Very high quality UQ. Adam took the time to talk me thru everything I needed and answered all my questions and gave me some excellent recommendations. when the UQ arrived everything was as I wanted (NO SUPRISES). I am 6-2" - 280lbs the one I ordered was a perfect fit for me and my hammock. 1st night out 21* it keep me very warm. no drafts or cold spots. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone. I will be ordering one for my wife.
by Grapenut – 11th Feb 2014
I could not be happier with this product. I ordered a 0-degree Incubator after accepting an invitation for a winter trip on the AT in the Smokies. I asked Adam if he could expedite my order and he was happy to oblige. I fell Ill with a bug just before the trip and never got a chance to hang and "fit" my new Incubator before the trip. That turned out to be a non-issue. The tapered baffles and draft collars on Stormcrow's latest design made fitting the underqult a easy as simply connecting it to each end of my 11-foot gathered end hammock. That is all I had to do! No CBS!

I have camped several times this winter in near zero degree weather, and finally ordered an incubator 0. I found it east to set up with my ENO double nest, and I had the warmest night yet. I was very comfortable all night with a low of 5 degrees F. I have slept with both a pad and homemade under quilt ....NO comparison! I can't say enough good things about the underquilt. I wish I had purchased it several months ago. Well worth the money, with good service.
by Unknown – 6th Feb 2014
I absolutely love this underquilt! I had it out in 30 degree weather and I didn't feel any cold at all! It was one of the best investments I made for my hammock! Highly recommend!
by Seb – 6th Jan 2014
I just got a 0deg Incubator a couple of weeks ago.. I bought it as an upgrade for my first underquilt, a Snugpak synthetic one, weighing 1300g! Now this baby should keep me warmer than the Snugpak quilt and that for only half the weight! I am yet to try it out, but hope to be able to pair it with my Hennessy Hammock Expedition asym zip any time soon.
I must say that I am impressed by the way it is put together, real quality stitching. The suspension system is well thought of. And last but not least: that Argon Brown fabric looks pretty cool.

I have been extremely satisfied with the 0 incubator. It's built very well and packed full of small features that make a big difference. This is truly ready go out of the box. The un boxing/first test was a low 20F night that left me with a true respect for quality gear. my other gear did not hold up that well and I wound up hanging in a bit eirly with my incubator to stay warm. If you are on the edge like I was just do it. It's more than worth it in the warmth and a huge dirence in size and weight in the pack.

This is my fourth item that I have purchased from Hammock Gear and one word can sum it all up…QUALITY…If you are tired of freezing between the trees just do it and order. You will not be disappointed.
by Tim C - 25 Dec 2013 – 24th Dec 2013
Rec eived the zero degree Incubator yesterday. Fast and hassle free delivery to Australia. Havent had the chance to use it yet but it appears to be really well made and packs up small and light which is what I was looking for. Should keep me warm even through the coldest deer hunting over here.

I took my new 0 degree incubator (2 oz overfill) out for a three night trip on the Appalachian Trail in mid-Virginia recently. I have several torso-length underquilts but this is my first full length one. I found it very easy to set up on my 10-ft hammock as it needed practically no adjustments. I was toasty warm at 13 degrees F and I feel certain that I would have been comfortable at 0 or below. I have found my deep winter underquilt! I really enjoyed not having to place a pad under my legs. This is my 5th product from HG (3 top quilts and now 2 underquilts). The quality on this quilt and all of my others is is amazing! I highly recommend this underquilt if you want to hang in very cold weather. It would be easy to supplement with a full length pad and go well below zero.

My buddies told me to go with hammock gear because they were the best and I'm glad I did!! Best customer service around and best products!

Ordered a 0 degree Burrow and Underquilt together over the Thanksgiving holiday, received as soon as one could expect with holiday shipping- NO IDEA where they found the time to make this kit. And beautiful, warm fluffy kit it is.
Going to be 27 tonight, should be no problem for this setup. With a little trial and error I got it to fit snugly around my HH Expedition
ASYM TIP- Don't lay quite so diagonal - this is a big roomy taco that gives you space to stretch your limbs.

A very great product! Very lightweight and easy to setup. You won't be disappointed with the warmth it provides when the temperature drops!
Totally worth the cost.

I'm a relatively new hanger, having owned and used a WBBB for the past 2 years or so. I've hung with it locally here in North Carolina, as well as in some pretty obscure places, like in Himachel Pradesh in the southern Himilayan Mountains. I. love. my. hammock.
I've been using the Warbonnet 3 season Yeti for most of my trips, but a recent trip with my sons for their Boy Scout outing pushed me to the lower limits of the Yeti - around 20-25 degrees. The following morning, with a weak 3G signal on my Samsung, I ordered this product with 4 extra ounces of extra stuffing.
What I love about it:
I love the overall quality. I'm a former design engineer for the sewn products industry - I designed equipment for industrial sewing machines and I've seen my fair share of sewn/stitched products commercially. When I got the Incubator, I immediately recognized the quality, and attention to detail in the construction of the UQ.
The materials are also wonderfully chosen. They have a nice 'hand', meaning, they feel soft against your skin when you run your hand across them. If you go into an REI or local sporting goods store, you won't find a material like this at an ENO rack.
The bias cuts are perfectly proportioned. There is more insulation up at your torso, and less towards your legs and feet where its less needed. The sides of the UQ also come up very high, past where you think you'd need them, so you immediately feel enveloped and warm.
What I didn't like:
There is a collection of elastic bands running both the length and width of the pad. The ones that run along your feet and head are in my opinion, too thin for what they do. They're 1/16" elastic, and should be thicker. I say this because the first night I used it, I thought I'd cinched it down enough but hadn't, allowing cool air to slip over the edge and cascade down into the channel below my back. This was solved relatively easily enough the next morning by cinching it completely down above my head, but again, to make it work, I'd maxed out the elastic of that 1/16" cordage.
Secondly, because this is a heavy UQ, (I ordered the extra 4oz) you can expect this UQ to hang heavy. This means the 2nd night you go to use it you'll realize what the size buckles along the length of the UQ are for....they're for running lines from one side of the UQ over your ridge line to the buckles on the opposite side to "pull up" the UQ and make it tight against your body. My friend, who'd purchased a 20 deg version of this UQ showed me the next night what he had built with some cordage and some 'beaners. For $300+ though, I think you should get 3 elastic line kits - which I went to a local sporting goods store and bought supplies for when I got back from my first trip.
I used a 4' section of 1/8" elastic cord cut into 3 equal lengths. I used a press-fit clip on used on kayaks, and then a small Nightize 'beaner on each end. Once applied, I took my new assembly and tested in the back yard on a night here in NC where it dropped into the mid-teens overnight. No cold pockets. If anything, I was sweating for a while until about 2,3AM.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending this product to anyone who was cold weather camping in their hammock. It's by far one of the best constructed pieces of equipment I own - better than my Marmot sleeping bag, in fact - so far as materials and construction go. If you cold weather camp, do not hesitate to purchase this - and get the extra down (splurge on yourself...your worth it).
I needed this for a trip, and Adam got it to me in time, also - which is consistent with what you've read above. This is a great guy - living in America, making quality products one at a time. If that's not enough to get you to buy it, you deserve to be cold at night.
I would ask that Adam look into making a Travel Hammock Sock like WBBB. I wanted to buy one of those too, and didn't see it on the website. If people are buying this UQ, they're likely to buy the travel sock as well, for cold weather excursions. If HG made one, I would have bought it, hands down.
Supplies to make the UQ support ties:
These are the ends I used on each of the cut 16" long x 1/8" elastic pieces:
These are the clips I used to connect the shock cords to the Incubator UQ:
