Hammock Gear Under Quilts
Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".
Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.
All quilts are made to order. Please inquire with email@example.com for current lead times.
All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.
About the Incubator 20˚
The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort... The Standard length Incubator 20° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”. With 850 fill power DWR Treated Grey Goose Down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 20°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.
The Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down. This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm. The Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system and a stuff sack.
Under Quilt Advantages
Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of goose down under quilts. To summarize:
|Fill Weight||11 oz||12 oz||13 oz|
|Total Weight||20.25 oz||22.0 oz||23.39 oz|
We utilize the finest 850 fill power, water-resistant goose down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.
All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.
All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.
At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

Just took my new incubator out on a camping trip where the overnights hit the low 30s. Stayed warm and comfy with the 20 degree incubator. I had done the sleeping pad in the hammock previously because I didn't want to spend the money on an underquilt (thought I didn't need it). If you are on the fence about buying one like I was, do it - it's worth every penny!! It's a world of difference and you won't regret it.
Simple to setup and easy to adjust - couldn't ask for more in an underquilt.

It's here because of the Shug, Went for the short version with black outer and blue inner. 2 oz over stuff. Fits just perfect and i love the soft fabric. Super light and saves me 700 grams on my old kit! Out of this world stitching and super soft fabric. Remember don't let the wind steal your heat pop a UQ protector on and your beautiful HG UQ is protected and gives even more of the Cosy Cosy. thanks guys. Greetings from Scotland.

I have not had a chance to use the underquilt yet, so only going with 4 stars. I'm sure after using it I would go to 5!!! 1st, I was amazed at the quick response/ship time! I ordered it on a Sunday night, and it shipped Thursday! Received it by Saturday!!!! When it arrived I actually thought I got an empty box because it was so light! Opened it up and was impressed by the quality of the stitching. Overall this looks like a great piece of gear, and it took a very short time to fluff up. I ordered the Aragon 90 inner/outer just because I felt it would wear better and it looks/feels amazing. can't wait to put it to use on several trips planned for this year in the Colorado backcountry!!

Loving my under quilt! Haven't been to the woods with it yet, am going this weekend with 32 for a prediction of low temps. Have used it in the yard with the kids watching the stars and am impressed!
by Jim H – 7th Mar 2017
I bought this quilt based on a recommendation from a friend. It exceeded my expectations. Great quality and still very light. I've used it once at around 30 degrees. It kept me toasty warm all night. I could feel the trapped warm air between the hammock and the quilt. I highly recommend this for cold weather hammocking.
by Kent Crawford – 6th Mar 2017
I read about this company on Hammock Forum. Decided to purchase it instead of using pads on my Hennessy Jungle Expedition. I have had it down to 15°, with 20 mph. winds and i was warm. I am usually a cold sleeper! I am very glad i purchased this product. It shipped exactly when he said it would. I will definitely be purchasing other products from Hammock Gear! All workmanship is flawless on this quilt.

Love this thing! I got mine with 2oz overfill and was comfortable in my Warbonnet blackbird xlc hammock with Superfly tarp down to 25 degrees and 30mph wind. I believe it could have dropped down to 15 degrees and still been comfortable. I didn't even need heavy layers to sleep in! The adjustment was very easy and getting it to ride right was easy considering this is my first underquilt. Big improvement from sleeping with a pad. Love this product and very pleased with the service and quick replies to emails.

Like so many other people on this site, I called and asked about delivery before an upcoming trip. My underquilt was delivered just in time for my trip. A great hike through the mountains of Virginia. Snow on the ground and I was warm and comfortable. I had been sleeping on my pad from the tent. No comparison to the comfort and range of sleeping positions. No cold spots. No trying to stay on the mattress during the night.
If you have been looking for a while like me, just go for it. You will be pleased. And the personal service and knowledge that you are buying from real people who are part of this hammock community is rewarding as well.

Took this out along with my 40˚ burrow this last weekend for a little field testing. Got down to 20˚ with a 14˚ windchill. Never got cold underneath. My burrow did well over 10˚ under it's rating and I'm sure the incubator will have similar results, but lately we haven't seen a lot of temperatures consistently that cold around my neck of the woods anyway. Can't wait to get it out again!
by Chris G. – 26th Feb 2017
Bought my incubator 20 in prep for my AT thru hike. Have taken it on several trips and the only issues I had was having to remove clothing to keep from sweating the underquilt was so warm. I also use it inside as I sleep in my hammock probably 3 nights a week. That underquilt and a light sheet is the perfect combo for inside sleeping. If i had to buy another underquilt tomorrow it would be the incubator no questions asked.

I'm new to hammock camping and while the winters where I live are mild, I seem to always sleep cold. First time out with the Incubator 20 I did not have it close enough to the hammock, and it was obviously a little drafty. Temps were in the high 30's and I was chilly. This was 100% user error-- continue reading!
Second time out I was snug as a bug, got down to the low 50's and I was almost too warm with my 50 degree bag as a top quilt. I recommend watching Shug's video on how to hang and adjust the suspension, it helped me a lot.
There IS a learning curve with this thing. I wish I had gone to the park, or someplace nearby to test it out before taking it overnight the first time. I recommend you practice before camping, but once you get it right you'll be very happy.
So glad to support a small biz and handmade, technical kit like this. Thank you, HammockGear!

This is my first "real" underquilt and its amazing the difference in comfort and warmth from my old "trying to get by" underquilt's I have had before !!
The attention to detail is impressive ! It's obvious that there was a lot a R&D that was put into the design of Incubator quilt and I couldn't be happier with my purchase !
One last thing....
As I said before this was my first "real" quilt and I had a bunch of questions that I needed answers to before purchasing and the friendly staff was very helpful and explained them all very clearly to me so my only decisions where what colors did I want.....???
Great product....Great customer service and in my opinion a great purchase !
No more cold nights for me !!!
This was my first purchase from HammockGear but it definitely won't be my last !!!

Tested my Incubator 20 (no overfill) in the Dolly Sods, WV in late January. 16 degrees one night and I was toasty! Hiking + hammock sway + 20 degree top and underquilts is like trail magic! I slept 11 hours each night I was out there. Get one, you won't regret it!
by Justin P. – 30th Jan 2017
I placed my order on a Friday and had my very own multicam short incubator 20 w/ 2 oz of over stuff by the following Saturday. I took it out in some cold windy conditions the following weekend. Lows in the high teens - low twenties for 2 nights and I was so toasty warm. Woke up to a bit of snow on sunday morning and just laid there in my hammock, snug as a bug watching the snow fall. I believe in the HG Incubator!!! It is awesome, service was fast and pleasant. Thank you for an awesome product.
by Travis S – 29th Jan 2017
I had this underquilt out several times in November and December, and the temps got down in the 20's. I kept wonderfully warm the entire time, and even caught myself sleeping in in the morning! Can't imagine a more comfortable or easy to use setup. Well done, HG!
by Brantley – 26th Jan 2017
If you are looking for an incredibly lightweight and quality under quilt for hammock camping, then you're looking at the right one! Compresses very nicely to fit any size ruck and is simple to use. Have not had cold butt syndrome since using. Well worth every penny.
by adapperdemon – 26th Jan 2017
I'll start by saying that I sleep in my Hennessy Hammock full time indoors. Even when sleeping indoors I am prone to "CBS", so I used a pad to minimize this. Putting a pad in your nice comfy hammock is a terrible choice! I constantly woke up sweaty or worse with a sore back...or hip...or shoulder. Then I decided to actually take care of myself by buying an underquilt. After countless reviews online, I decided on HG. I have owned two $500 sleeping bags and they can't hold a candle to the craftsmanship of my incubator; every stitch is perfect, every tie out perfectly tied. This is a quality product! Buy an underquilt from HG and prove that you actually love yourself.
by Will M. – 16th Jan 2017
Received the Incubator 20 for a birthday gift and have since used it once in 15-degree weather and once in 50-degree weather. It worked excellently in conjunction with a sleeping bag in the cold weather and in the milder weather, I did not need to use a sleeping bag.
This was all with the ENO Doublenest.
I've so far been very satisfied with the product and it has met my every expectation.
by KnotHere – 11th Jan 2017
Let me start off by telling you that I'm have been a cold-butt, pad finaglin', DIY, dirt cheap, hammock hanger for 6 years now. I have tried every quick and easy solution for cold butt syndrome in that time. Emergency blankets, truck sun reflectors, warm water bottles, but to no avail. I didn't want to admit that I needed a "commercial product", and I certainly didn't want to spend the money. My addiction to hiking and hanging took me towards winter hiking, now seeing as that I don't have much butt to begin with, I really can't afford to freeze any of it off. I took a deep breath, swallowed my pride, and lubed up my wallet.
I ordered the Incubator 20 Underquilt. I had several questions about my order and Harry Carlson was quick to reply, and super helpful. Before I even got my UQ in the mail, I could feel the warmth of this company. A couple anxious weeks later it came and like a kid at Christmas I couldn't wait to play with it. I work 24 hour shifts and had my girlfriend bring it to me at work. The box was surprising large, yet light. Once opened I realized it was shipped in a large canvas bag so it didn't become compressed. I laid it out on the table and gazed at quality, beauty, and craftsmanship. A hiking partner of mine was building a DIY and we compared the amount of loft mine had, nearly 3 times as much! In the back of Fire Station 11, I hung a DIY hammock and tried it out. The temps were about 35 degrees and I felt an immediate warmth. The suspension system was simple, and very effective. So far, so good but I wanted to REALLY test its limits. A few days later, the temps forecasted 0 degrees with a slight breeze. Well you know I'm going to do this, right??
So there I was, 8PM, hanging my Hennessy A-Sym, with my HG Incubator 20 next to my buddy with his DIY setup. Both rated for the same temperatures and both using the same rated sleeping bags and inflatable pad (can't give them up). As we settled in, friends and family are frantically texting and commenting on social media that we are crazy. Perhaps so, my beer was frozen solid within 2 minutes of opening it. I resigned to zipping up and tucking in after looking at my temp gauge which read 3 degrees. An hour later, my buddy bailed, overcome with his back frozen and defeated but his own DIY creation. I smirked, rolled onto my side and slept like a baby still in a warm fetus of down.
So there it is. I spent the money, got a great quality product, perfect customer service, foolproof suspension, and warm to well below its rating. I can't ask for anything more. I'm excited and feel comfortable headed out to the annual Hammock Forums Mount Rogers winter Hang and a 2 day hike in mid February in the Virginia mountains.
PS, I've repurposed my old reflectix pads as pot coozies which suits me much better!
by Bob V – 25th Dec 2016
woodland Camp Incubator20* with one ounce of overstuff. This quilt works perfect on my Warbonnet XLC, first setup took less then ten minutes to make sure everything was adjusted properly on both ends.
the next time I used it I only needed to clip on the s-biners and I was ready to use it. I also have a Cuben fiber tarp from HG. can't say enough about their commitment to quality.
if your having any doubts about purchasing one of these products you won't be sorry.
by Rick H – 16th Dec 2016
HG products have such a great reputation for a reason; I have had my incubator 20 for a couple weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it. All I'm going to say is that if for some reason you are hesitating, DON"T. The product is worth every penny, and is backed up by some really great folks.
by David R – 14th Dec 2016
The Incubator is a very high quality product. Upon receiving it I tried to find a loose thread or a bad stitch and I just couldn't. I was impressed with the craftsmanship. The HG build team takes pride in their work. I spent a few days communicating with the sales team with a few slight modifications I wanted on the Incubator and they were extremely accommodating and quick to respond. If anyone is on the fence, I recommend reaching out to the sales team with your concerns because they will listen and take care of you. I personally got a color strip down the middle of the incubator for a sharper look and a little overstuff. The sewing is just amazing. The lowest I have gone with is so far is 7 degrees and I may push it a little further with a pad. Thanks Hammock Gear and your customer service team is amazing.
by James Amyx – 13th Dec 2016
Shug was right. Hammock Gear is the best! My Incubator 20 kept me toasty warm in 30 degree weather. I have zero complaints about this product. This underquilt is a MUST HAVE. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
by Ethan Z – 30th Nov 2016
In my trial week, I used this all the way down into 12 degree weather with 15 mph hour winds. As long as I kept it wrapped under the parts of my body that were touching the walls, I didn't feel even a little bit of cold get in through this underquilt.
by Joe Baker – 14th Nov 2016
Just purchased this 20 degree underquilt for my recent hike of the NPT trail in the adirondacks. It got pretty cold, 2 nights it was in the low teens (my boots were frozen solid). I was toasty the whole time in my hammock thanks to this underquilt. Took a little bit to find the sweet spot with the suspension but once you find it your set. Can't speak for the durability yet but it seems like this will work just fine for my AT thru hike in march.
by Jeff (KW) Kirkwood – 14th Nov 2016
Just used my new 20 deg incubator over this past weekend and what can I say... I will never hang without one again. Even though the temps this weekend got down to the 30s, I was still snug as a bug. As a topper I used an old Army poncho liner. In the middle of the night I reached between the hammock (WB BB XLC) and the UQ and it was toasty warm. I had about a 2 inch gap, which seemed to be plenty. The quality of workmanship is second to none, I did not notice any odd stitching minute holes or any of the other nuisances that one might encounter, The fit and finish is I dare say perfect. The incubator is very well thought out and designed. From end to end, clip to clip everything works seamlessly together to provide you with the best possible fit.
Remember... TAG TO THE HEAD END!!!!

I absolutely love my incubator 20. I have tried to do everything myself ever the under quilt. I just couldn't justify spending the money for a "store bought " quilt. Man was I wrong! The incubator 20 is the best upgrade I have made. It is well worth the price. I was comfortable at 30 degrees and had to shed clothes to keep from sweating.
by Pete – 8th Nov 2016
The HG folk are wonderful to work with, and the quality of their product is top-notch. On the first hang with by 20, it got to 35 degrees with wind and fog. I didn't even notice. Setup was a breeze, I'll be making HG my first stop for future quilts.
by Grumpy Redneck – 7th Nov 2016
My son and I each have an Incubator 20 for winter (Oklahoma) camping (along with a couple Burrow 20 top quilts). The combination is amazing. They are accurately rated - 20 degrees means sleeping comfortably at 20 degrees. It does NOT mean "you will barely stay alive if you also put on all the clothes you brought" like some other manufacturer's ratings.
I've slept comfortably down to 16 degrees wearing long johns & a down hood.
Ask for 3-4 oz of over-fill. Not because it's needed for the warmth. Get the over-fill because it will help keep the down in place as it gets dirty / ages. It's a small additional cost.
Buy this - you won't be disappointed.
by jennifer – 5th Nov 2016
I sleep cold. Iceberg cold. Received my Incubator 20 this week (less than 2 weeks from order to my doorstep - wow!) and tried it last night in a very damp 39 degrees. It proved to be the first night that I slept straight through - usually, I wake around 3 a.m. due to cold spots. I am very impressed and so very grateful.
The craftsmanship on this underquilt is beyond words. I have looked at every square inch and it is perfection! Thanks, HammockGear!
by Steve K – 4th Nov 2016
Worth every penny! Had borrowed a 40 degree from a friend and finally spent the money to get my own but went with the 20 degree. Had a 2 nighter shortly after ordering this and HG was able to work with me to make sure I had my gear on time to use before we set up. Great customer service.
If you are thinking about getting any of these, you can't go wrong with getting the extra long. You'll never saying in the back country that you wish you had a little less coverage by your underquilt.
by John F – 2nd Nov 2016
This met and exceeded my expectations.
The warmth is incredible, it feels like an electric blanket.
The suspension system is intuitive and well thought out.
I would highly recommend this to anyone considering an UQ
by Bill – 2nd Nov 2016
Just ordered the Incubator 20 and it arrived in less than a week. I haven't had time to get it out in the woods since it just arrived, but we are planning to trips in the next few weeks. I did set my hammock up in the back yard and used my new incubator 20 under quilt and the burrow 20 top quilt for about an hour. Construction is top notch. I know I'm gonna love it.
by Marty – 28th Oct 2016
Very impressed cant wait to get it in the woods, 4 stars due to the 10% off sale just a couple of weeks post purchasing.
by CDH – 25th Oct 2016
This makes hanging in the cold an exquisite experience. I now prefer the cooler months, because this makes a hammock into a warm cocoon of awesome. Very possibly the most comfortable I've ever been. Better than a warm bed by far. Buy it, you won't regret it.
by Richie - New York – 21st Oct 2016
Frist of all, thank you so much for the expedited delivery. I have been hammock camping for about 5 years now in all 4 seasons even in temperatures as low as negative 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Why in the world have I waited so long to get this underquilt (Incubator 20). It was the warmest and most comfortable sleep I have EVER had in a hammock. I am definitely purchasing the Burrow 20 very soon. Thank you Hammock Gear for a top notch quality product. I am already looking forward to my next cold weather outing.
by Your Name – 20th Oct 2016
I received my hammock in time for my camping trip which was amazing considering it only left ten days to be made and arrive at my place. On the first night of my camping trip the temps dropped to around 30 degrees and I was perfectly comfortable with the Incubator 20 under my hammock and an old unrated sleeping bag on top like a blanket. This was definitely worth the purchase and I can't wait to use it on my road trip west and all the winter camping adventures to follow. Thank You!
by Brandon Eastland – 15th Oct 2016
I used this on a back country hunt where the temps got down to low 20's and the wind was gusting up to 30mph, not once was I even remotely close to being cold. I think this could easily be used in temps below 20. Adjustment was easy and the quality of construction was perfect. I had everybody in camp that was using sleeping pads really jealous. I bought the standard length and standard fill.
by Gottabyke – 10th Oct 2016
Quality and craftsmanship are second to none. Very conservatively rated. I added 2 oz. of overfill. first night was 28 degrees F and i was toasty warm. I would say that I could easily take this to 0 degrees and below. Turnaround was about 2 weeks and customer service was excellent.
by Thomas – 9th Oct 2016
Seems very well built and works pretty good even if the genius using it puts it on the wrong way around. My legs were plenty warm.
by Austin – 5th Oct 2016
This UQ is the best quality I have seen. I also have one of the Top Quilts and it is great as well. This company's customer service is AMAZING! I will definitely be doing business again. If you are in the market for high-end ham mocking gear, look no further. I did the research, let me save you the time. Just order from this company and you will be very pleased.
by L. Parrish – 3rd Oct 2016
Was not going to be needing my Incubator as soon as I ordered it but trip dates changed and Hammock Gear got it to me on time. Was not disappointed in quality or workmanship as I already have the Top Quilt.
by Bruce Ferguson – 29th Sep 2016
I bought a Burrow 20 and an Incubator 20 for winter camping in the south and high altitude camping in the Rockies. I recently took a week-long training course that had us hiking the continental divide in Colorado. Temps in the high 20's most nights. Even on the night that it went to 19 I slept in socks pants and a thin shirt. I had to pull my arms out a few times because I was getting too warm. I think I slept warmer and more comfortably than anyone else, groundhog or hanger, in the whole group. We had a "circle stretch" one morning where you had to lead a stretch and tell your favorite piece of gear. I said " I have three because they make one system; my Warbonnet Blackbird, my Hammock Gear Burrow, and my Hammock gear Incubator"

Vary well built product looking forward to using it
by Wilson Allison – 22nd Sep 2016
As usual, my quilt from HG is PERFECT! This is my second quilt from HG and it's as perfect as my first quilt. The craftsmanship is unparalleled. They also met my timeline for an upcoming trip with ease.
Don't hesitate, just ORDER ONE!

There is nothing to say that hasn't been said it is simply great THANK YOU
by Fred Lorf – 22nd Jul 2016
Received this in just under 3 weeks, and the quality is excellent, as always. Have not been able to get out and use it yet as it is so hot right now, but I have no doubt it will go great with my HG Burrow!
by Don Burton – 14th Jul 2016
I finally bit the bullet and ordered my Incubator 20 and I love it. It took awhile to decide to purchase it though given the price. By the time you factor in the cost of materials and labor to make it I guess it's a good deal after all. The quality is fantastic. Not a flaw in it. I'm tired off fooling around with my blue pad. It just never stayed in place. I didn't mind the month wait to get it since I ordered it early in the season. Thanks a lot HAMMOCK GEAR!
by J. Carter – 7th Jul 2016
I love my incubator! I had always used a sleeping pad and had to carry a heavy sleeping bag to compensate. Who doesn't want to intelligently lighten their load when on the trail!?! The craftsmanship is remarkable on this quilt and it's easily one of the lightest on the market. It sets up easy and making adjustments when needed is simple. It's well known that a quilt is the way to go when hammock camping and hammockgear has the best quilts. You won't be disappointed...
by Brian Goode – 23rd May 2016
I had 2 main problems with my previous 3/4 length underquilt.
Cold feet from kicking away the foot pad at night and couldn't get the hang I wanted. It was either too tight and caused the underquilt to slide too far up increasing the cold feet problem or too loose causing cold butt syndrome.
The incubator instantly hung perfect with zero effort to correct cold spots or too far up or down.
I liked it so well I ordered a Zero degree as a second use one for my daughter and a 2 month cold season use for myself.
by Patrick – 14th May 2016
I've been hammock camping for about four years now and just recently purchased this UQ. If I had to do it all over again, I would have bought this at the same time as the hammock. It's easily adjustable and simply works. The workmanship and attention to detail is great and I expect this quilt to last for years to come.
by Unknown – 13th May 2016
At first it kept slipping off and to the side. I kept waking up with a cold butt. And having to rearrange it. I finally got out to take a look and I didn't hook it at one end right so it was applying tension to one side, which is why it was slipping off and to my side. I fixed and got back in and was warm all night after that. It made a huge difference. Very well made and looks great.
by Kyle N. – 10th May 2016
Wow, this 20 degree underquilt is well worth the money! Super warm, easy to set up, and much more comfortable than using a pad in the hammock! My next purchase is going to be the Burrow top quilt to complete the set!
by Adam Boyd – 10th May 2016
I have nothing but good things to say about this under quilt so far. The attention to quality and detail is outstanding! I can tell a lot of research, testing, design, and user feedback went into the development of this product so far. The warmth on a 40deg night was great! The standard length fits my WBBB xlc perfect. I don't have to use any pads with this under quilt, it covers all 6'1" 250 lbs of me.
Also, I informed them i had a trip coming up and they went above and beyond to ensure I got my underquilt fast! It's a no-brainer in the future, all my quilts will come from HG. I was not given a discount, I paid full price with my own money for this item. I just like it enough to leave a well deserved rating!
by Bob (OhMrBob) – 9th May 2016
I got my new underquilt 2 weeks ago. I played with it at the house for a few days and I was fascinated by the build quality and the softness of the material. The under quit is incredibly well thought out, deigned and made.
I used it this past weekend on my Warbonnet Black Bird XLC... it was perfect. It fit like a glove after a couple of adjustments and it kept me warm with out being too hot.
I am incredibly happy with my purchase.

If you like the idea of elevated camping, you want a hammock. For me, there is no better sleep than the sleep I can find in a hammock. I sleep like a stone in it. But what about cold weather? Well, don't bother trying to keep an insulation pad under you. Forget it. It's so annoying and not even a wide pad is wide enough in the hammock! You need an underquilt. I owned the ENO underquilt and for two seasons I was under the impression that there was nothing better than that. However, once my wife came along on a hiking trip to the Lost Coast Trail in California, we needed another one. I ordered the Incubator 20 with 2 ounces overfill, and it's just fantastic! This thing is so much warmer that I had to trade it with my wife on our first trip. It's way more lightweight (better down quality) and a-symetrically shaped. The craftsmanship is also superb. I actually wonder how it's possible to price this item so reasonably! Try to get a Western Mountaineering sleeping bag for a price like this. Maybe you can find one dirty old bag on e-bay with a burned hole in it. Really, trust all the reviews it's a top product. It will make you sleep tight!
One little suggestion I do have though: You always have to look for the "HG" logo to find the top end of your hammock ( it's a-symetrially shaped). The a-symetrical shape is unobtrusive, not easy to see which end is for the head and which end is for the foot. Since you don't want to sleep with your head in the foot compartment, I would suggest a more easy visual clue to find the top end of the hammock. Maybe a color strip at the very end of the quilt would make the orientation more obvious.
Thanks for this great product!

Quality of material is exceptional. Installs in seconds, adjusts very easily, warmth is also exceptional. Cannot recommend enough!!!!!

I have the multicam version and it is soooo warm! Very high quality! Thanks for the great quilt HG!

The Incubator 20 performed flawlessly on the first night in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Windy conditions with temps in the low 40's. It was simple to hang and kept all the warmth right where it was needed. You will not be disappointed with any purchase from Hammock Gear, top quality stuff.

After the first 800 miles ground camping the PCT in 2015, I sent the air mattress home. The Incubator 20 with no overstuff kept me snug as a bug in a rug in northern California Oregon and Washington. I looked forward to making camp every night because of this wonderful under quilt. Thanks, hammockgear!

I just got back from hiking the Snowbank Loop in the BWCAW with a few friends over the weekend. We had temperatures below 28 F. Only two out of five were able to stay warm--myself and another friend who has also purchased an underquilt.
I had read all of the reviews and was starting to think the UQ sounded too good to be true, but my Incubator was worth every penny. On our second and coldest night out, I gave my Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat Pad to one friend, and my clothes to another friend so that they could make it through the night. I was left with nothing but boxers and my Big Agnes (left the pad insert at home), but still slept like a baby.
This was, hands down, my best camping purchase. I will never hang without this underquilt again. The craftsmanship is impeccable and it WORKS. Additionally, I had a tight deadline for receiving my UQ before this trip. The great folks at HG made that happen for me. I could not be happier.

Outstanding outstanding outstanding. Been using it every weekend since I received it. Down to 26 degrees so far and not a problem. Like that they color coded the S biner so its easier to find the different ends. Thanks for the improvement.
by Tim M – 22nd Apr 2016
All the reviews on this UQ are spot on. I got this with 2oz overstuff and am very pleased. The customer support was great. I had a few questions before ordering and they did a great job in steering me in the right direction.

The Incubator 20, simply put, makes hammock camping into a whole new experience. If you're using a pad in your hammock, stop what you're doing and order this underquilt. You'll never be sorry.
Service is excellent and if you need the gear for an upcoming trip, put the dates in your order and HG will do their best to get it to you on time.
Compare weight/performance/cost with Eno. HG is a better value and from what I've seen, superior quality.

This is my second set of quilts. Outstanding quality. Like the colored S biners to indicate head and foot end. I hang almost every weekend and have never been let down by this product.
by Unknown – 20th Apr 2016
Love it it keeps me warm but when I order my next one I need to make it wider. Im a side sleeper that curls up so it's just to shortbij the width for me, but would still recomend it to anyone
by Unknown – 15th Apr 2016
Got down to the low 20s my first night in it and was just as warm as friends in their tents with tent warmers.
by Buck – 12th Apr 2016
Spent my first night out in the hammock with the incubator 20 with 2oz over stuff. After some initial adjustments due to a few cold patches. I got it dialed in and it was perfect. It got down to about -1 degree C (30 degree F) was warm and comfy all night!

Purchased this UC after several reading reviews and doing some research. Ordering was a breeze came, lot sooner than expected. Finish and quality of workmanship great. Took it right out for a last-vestiges-of-winter hang on the AT. Set up was a real easy, fit my Hammock Bliss like they were made for each other. Temps got into the lo-mid 20’s with a steady breeze; very warm and comfy. Only reason for not giving 5 stars; can’t say how it holds up over the long haul. But aces so far..

Just returned from a soaker in a rain forest on the Oregon coast. Rained the whole time tempo in the low 40s. I usually use a sleeping pad and sleeping bag in my hammock. Never again. I had my best hammock sleep ever. I used a synthetic top quilt which wasn't as warm as it claimed. Thank goodness for the underquilt. I will be purchasing a burrow soon. I imagine I'll never be cold sleeping again.

I got two of these Incubator 20's for my wife and I. We took them out this last weekend and it got down to 15 degrees! I was only in my boxers and my wife in some sweats and we we so warm!! Not even one cold spot!! The quilts are amazing and the customer service is top notch!! I've already ordered a third set and will be ordering four more sets by years end for my family! Thank you Hammock Gear!!
by Corey (Mr. Three) – 15th Mar 2016
I love this under quilt, it is simply amazing! I've been out in it two nights now and have stayed plenty warm. We have had a really mild winter this year so I don't know how far I will be able to take it down, however as soon as I got into it I could feel my backside get nice and toasty :) ! I love it so much that I instantly got the burrow 20 to replace my synthetic 20 degree mummy bag. Thank you so much Adam and Jenny for a awesome, warm and comfortable night sleep.
by Quitman – 7th Mar 2016
Beautiful product. Quality made product. Feels great and very warm. You can't go wrong with this quilt. Temp rating seems very accurate. Shipping was less than 3 weeks from order to my door. I will buy my next quilt from Adam & Jenny!

Good price for quality. Really warm

After much research, I decided to buy the Hammock Gear Incubator 20 over the ENO Blaze. Price was much better but my concern was the long lead time due to a camping trip in 2 weeks. After a phone call to HG, they promised it would arrive in time and it did, actually a few days early! Spent 3 nights in the Linville Gorge in NC. Setup was super easy, quality was exceptional, and best of all, I stayed very warm all night. Temps were in the low 30's with a strong wind. This quilt is SO much nicer than a sleeping pad in my hammock on cold nights. Highly recommend this product and this company! Thank you so much!
by Scott – 3rd Mar 2016
Used it twice now in low 30° F temperatures. Very warm all night. I am 5' 11" and I ordered a regular length. I am very happy with the underquilt but wish that I would have ordered a long. I like the idea of having a little extra coverage without having to adjust it perfectly. Works great on my ENO singlenest.
by John – 1st Mar 2016
It performs exceptionally well kept me extremely warm without over heating in temps of 30 this far. I expect it go lower then 20 with how well I stayed warm in a short amount of time with the high winds also beating on me. Can't wait to eventualy delve into the other good they make!
by Ronald Ellis – 29th Feb 2016
Quilt was easy to install on my Hennessy Explorer Deluxe right out of the box. The most easiest piece of gear to use of all my gear. well built. Excellent quality. Ordering and shipping was spot on. Great customer service. highly recommended.

Great product. Put mine in the dryer for 20 min on air only with tennis balls in white socks to fluff it up. Works perfectly have spent a few night in it the name incubator says it all. I add 1 ounce of down. Set up was super easy just watched a hammock video had it dialed in 5 min
by GOOSE – 9th Feb 2016
Excellent quality. WARM!
I've been using a Jacks R Better UQ for a few years, and the HG Incubator 20 is a MUCH superior product!
by Mix – 8th Feb 2016
This uq is awesome. It has kept me warm down to 18°, and it's only rated to20°.
Got this one for my son, as I have used mine nightly in colder months for the last 2 winters since i gave up tents, and beds in August 2014.
I look forward to it every night I use it.
Quality is superb.
by troy gilliam – 28th Jan 2016
I ordered the incubator 20 degree with 3 ounce overstuff. When I received this bottom quilt I was amazed on how well it was made. Wow! I will be ordering a top quilt soon. Very light weight and compact. Small package but with a big difference in weight and comfort . This company is an awesome company with great work ethics and heart for their customers. I highly recommend Hammock Gear and their families .
by Big Fish – 27th Jan 2016
I did my research and decided that HG has the best UQ's. I was not disappointed. In the south east we have cold wet winters. At a recent trip, we got down to 16* and a zero windchill with 35 mph. Paired with a Superfly tarp and a Feathered Feiends Raven UL10... I was toasty warm. I'm a rookie so I didn't understand how to keep the shock cords a little loose or how to use the Dutch ridge line clips, but now I know. Regardless, the UQ performed great!!! The ground dwellers in my group froze with their Fly Creek tents and Helium bags. I slept like a baby. Thanks guys!!!

I'm the proud owner of TWO incubator 20s. (One for me, one for my wife). For anyone who has discovered the joys of sleeping in hammocks, you will NOT be disappointed with the incubator under quilt. The craftsmanship is top notch. The performance to weight ratio is amazing. I've taken this out in well below 20 degree conditions and have slept toasty! The customer service is superb. Highly recommended.

My college aged son camps 3 seasons here in the PNW in his Hennesey Asym and he is one that NEVER asks for anything for Christmas. On Dec 15 he mentioned an UQ might be something he would like so I educated myself on them and narrowed it down, but then realized as I went to order December 16 they are all custom made nowhere near the PNW and this might be a problem for Christmas ordering!! These folks were sooooo helpful!! On December 23 I received a beautifully made, heavenly lofty feeling UQ custom made in my son's school colors - he was ecstatic! I can't recommend this company/product enough!!!! My son said it is a perfect match for his hammock and looks forward to much more warmth come chilly early Spring 2016 camping season! Thank you HG from a mom who rarely gets to make a home run like this !

I used to make my own clothes and make some of my own gear now. I know enough about fabrics and sewing to know when something is made well.
The workmanship and attention to detail on the Incubator is unreal. The seam-work and joining is absolutely perfect. The design, likewise, is incredible. It's like tiny robot aliens put this thing together.
I chose the Black/Black Argon 90 material. it's plenty lightweight, so don't get scared off jst because they offer the 67 as well. The stuff sack it came with was a little large, but I can easily just compress it more if I have to.

This is my third Hammock Gear quilt and the craftsmanship and quality show in every inch of the quilt.
by Satur Martínez – 16th Dec 2015
Incredible, everything I've read does not describe the quality and performance. My underquilt Incubator 20, at low temperatures responds very well. Furthermore, HG has fully complied with the deadline that I needed. Thank you very much. Satur from Spain.

This is my 3rd quilt purchase from HG and by far my favorite. I don't need to tell you all the awesome benefits of this item, because you can read the other 160+ reviews for that. I'd like to explain how simple, efficient, and pleasant the product is. I do a lot of fall and winter camping. It's my favorite time to hit the trails! So what did i use for warmth? A $40.00 closed cell foam pad in my hammock. Yes you can save a lot of money and go this route, but i promise you, there is NO COMPARISON to this underquilt. The comfort level while sleeping with a pad is around a 3-4 out of 10. Your arms get cold, your feet get cold, if and when you slip off the pad in the middle of the night you get cold. It just doesn't really work like you hope. That is not the case at all with this product. Imagine 11 hours of uninterrupted, peaceful, warm sleep on a chilly 28 degree night. That's exactly what i get when i use this product. Do yourself a favor and TREAT YO SELF!!! Buy one of these and then once you fall in love with it, promote the crap out of this company. I can't say enough good things about them or their products!!!
by Adrian Penner – 1st Dec 2015
Just purchased the Incubator 20 to go along with my Burrow 20 for a three day, two night backpacking trip. Temperatures dropped to low 20s and winds reached speeds of 40 miles per hour (gusts). I have never slept in these types of conditions and been so warm. I will admit the underquilt needs the protection of a tarp (which I had, but I need a bigger one) from the wind, but I was plenty warm in the low 20s. These top and bottom quilts along with a hammock have changed my way of thinking when it comes to backpacking. I may never sleep in a tent again!
by Luis Garcia – 29th Nov 2015
I used it on a night that hit 28 degrees and it was amazing. It was my first time to use it and I'm sold that this under quilt will always be there for me to keep warm.
by Steve Skinner (Mule) – 17th Nov 2015
I was amazed at how much 2 ounces of overfill filled the quilt up. I love it.
by smklogic – 16th Nov 2015
Like the other reviews state, their products and services are top notch. I ordered the first quilt thinking it might be a little short but they are true to their claimed sizes and I overestimated what I needed in length. I contacted them immediately and requested an exchange for a slightly shorter quilt to save a few grams and also added few custom modifications. Harry contacted me directly and confirmed the custom order and said there would be no charge for the inconvenience. Wow! He also remembered I needed this before a planned hike. They quilt came the morning of the hike, would’ve been the day before but USPS messed up in routing the package. I tested it on the AT that weekend when the temps dropped to 30 degrees. I also ordered their Burrow 40 top quilt. I had to take off an outer top layer I was too hot! Just a wool t-shirt, and super light wt fleece and long pants, no base layer and had to loosely cover myself with the quilt or I would start overheating. The under quilt easily adjusts to have a snug fit up under your shoulders and legs to keep out the draft. That’s key. Great job guys! Thanks much!

I purchased the incubator 20 in the long version because I'm 6,4. I have used it now twice and love how light it is and how easy it attaches to the hammock. The temps were in the low 40's one night and low 30's another night. I was comfortable and warm each time. I weighs a little more then a pound and packs down small. I highly recommend this product!
by Ken Reeves – 14th Nov 2015
Excellent workmanship! Delivered product to me in half the time promised. Just had it on an outing with upper 20's first night and -4 second night. First night was warm as toast, second night a little cool. I added 2oz of fill to standard spec which I recommend. GREAT PRODUCT!.
by Todd – 14th Nov 2015
Purchased the Incubator 20 with 2 extra ounces of fill. Had a trip coming up fast and needed it earlier than the planned date. Harry was very accommodating and was able to expedite the order to meet my date. Personal pickup allowed me to see the production and meet the dedicated employees who make these great quilts. I was able to test the quilt immediately with temps in the 30s and was perfectly comfortable. I can't wait to push the limits of this quilt as winter approaches.
by Marshal Kline – 13th Nov 2015
I'm not yet an experienced hammock'er, but as compared to my first underquilt purchase from another maker (which is also of very high quality), this quilt is even better in terms of quality and design. Based on a lot of shopping and research, you can find good quilts for a little less, but when you add in HG qualities and features, I don't know of anyone better.
by Tim – 12th Nov 2015
I just got my incubator 20 with 2 ounce over stuff. Now I have to say that it looks great the craftsmanship is excellent. I was a little surprised to see that even with 2 ounces of overstuff and the regular 15-20% overstuff that HG says goes into each UQ it did not seem to be too stuffed. I hope that it can take me down into the -15C range as I am planning a winter trip this year. I well review more after my trip.
by Matthew – 10th Nov 2015
Though I haven't used this quilt in extreme temperatures yet, I will be soon. It's kept me cozy warm for several weeks now in temps as low as 30° and I intend to spend the entire northern Ohio winter outdoors in the Incubator20.
I was previously using a yoga mat and sleeping bag, but this is far more comfortable, and much warmer. I have a top quilt on the way, and I'm sure this will keep me toasty far beyond its rated limit.
