Incubator 20

Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

About the Incubator 20˚

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort... The Standard length Incubator 20° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 2”.  With 850 fill power, water resistant goose down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 20°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system and a stuff sack.

All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Used it twice--loving it!

    by GOOSE – 9th Feb 2016

    Excellent quality. WARM!

I've been using a Jacks R Better UQ for a few years, and the HG Incubator 20 is a MUCH superior product!

  • CBS is a thing of the past.

    by Mix – 8th Feb 2016

This uq is awesome. It has kept me warm down to 18°, and it's only rated to20°.
Got this one for my son, as I have used mine nightly in colder months for the last 2 winters since i gave up tents, and beds in August 2014.
I look forward to it every night I use it.
    Quality is superb.

  • awesome product

    by troy gilliam – 28th Jan 2016

I ordered the incubator 20 degree with 3 ounce overstuff. When I received this bottom quilt I was amazed on how well it was made. Wow! I will be ordering a top quilt soon. Very light weight and compact. Small package but with a big difference in weight and comfort . This company is an awesome company with great work ethics and heart for their customers. I highly recommend Hammock Gear and their families .

  • A Generous 20* Raiting

    by Big Fish – 27th Jan 2016

I did my research and decided that HG has the best UQ's. I was not disappointed. In the south east we have cold wet winters. At a recent trip, we got down to 16* and a zero windchill with 35 mph. Paired with a Superfly tarp and a Feathered Feiends Raven UL10... I was toasty warm. I'm a rookie so I didn't understand how to keep the shock cords a little loose or how to use the Dutch ridge line clips, but now I know. Regardless, the UQ performed great!!! The ground dwellers in my group froze with their Fly Creek tents and Helium bags. I slept like a baby. Thanks guys!!!

  • Top notch all the way around!

    by Unknown – 5th Jan 2016

I'm the proud owner of TWO incubator 20s. (One for me, one for my wife). For anyone who has discovered the joys of sleeping in hammocks, you will NOT be disappointed with the incubator under quilt. The craftsmanship is top notch. The performance to weight ratio is amazing. I've taken this out in well below 20 degree conditions and have slept toasty! The customer service is superb. Highly recommended.

  • amazing customer service and product!

    by Kristi – 5th Jan 2016

My college aged son camps 3 seasons here in the PNW in his Hennesey Asym and he is one that NEVER asks for anything for Christmas. On Dec 15 he mentioned an UQ might be something he would like so I educated myself on them and narrowed it down, but then realized as I went to order December 16 they are all custom made nowhere near the PNW and this might be a problem for Christmas ordering!! These folks were sooooo helpful!! On December 23 I received a beautifully made, heavenly lofty feeling UQ custom made in my son's school colors - he was ecstatic! I can't recommend this company/product enough!!!! My son said it is a perfect match for his hammock and looks forward to much more warmth come chilly early Spring 2016 camping season! Thank you HG from a mom who rarely gets to make a home run like this !

  • Crazy well put together

    by Mystic – 18th Dec 2015

I used to make my own clothes and make some of my own gear now. I know enough about fabrics and sewing to know when something is made well.

The workmanship and attention to detail on the Incubator is unreal. The seam-work and joining is absolutely perfect. The design, likewise, is incredible. It's like tiny robot aliens put this thing together.

I chose the Black/Black Argon 90 material. it's plenty lightweight, so don't get scared off jst because they offer the 67 as well. The stuff sack it came with was a little large, but I can easily just compress it more if I have to.

  • Hammock Gear does it again. Another quality quilt!

    by Tony F. – 16th Dec 2015

This is my third Hammock Gear quilt and the craftsmanship and quality show in every inch of the quilt.

  • My first UQ and my first hammock experience

    by Satur Martínez – 16th Dec 2015

Incredible, everything I've read does not describe the quality and performance. My underquilt Incubator 20, at low temperatures responds very well. Furthermore, HG has fully complied with the deadline that I needed. Thank you very much. Satur from Spain.

  • Simply put....Epic purchase

    by Jason D. – 4th Dec 2015

This is my 3rd quilt purchase from HG and by far my favorite. I don't need to tell you all the awesome benefits of this item, because you can read the other 160+ reviews for that. I'd like to explain how simple, efficient, and pleasant the product is. I do a lot of fall and winter camping. It's my favorite time to hit the trails! So what did i use for warmth? A $40.00 closed cell foam pad in my hammock. Yes you can save a lot of money and go this route, but i promise you, there is NO COMPARISON to this underquilt. The comfort level while sleeping with a pad is around a 3-4 out of 10. Your arms get cold, your feet get cold, if and when you slip off the pad in the middle of the night you get cold. It just doesn't really work like you hope. That is not the case at all with this product. Imagine 11 hours of uninterrupted, peaceful, warm sleep on a chilly 28 degree night. That's exactly what i get when i use this product. Do yourself a favor and TREAT YO SELF!!! Buy one of these and then once you fall in love with it, promote the crap out of this company. I can't say enough good things about them or their products!!!

  • Backpacking will never be the same!

    by Adrian Penner – 1st Dec 2015

Just purchased the Incubator 20 to go along with my Burrow 20 for a three day, two night backpacking trip. Temperatures dropped to low 20s and winds reached speeds of 40 miles per hour (gusts). I have never slept in these types of conditions and been so warm. I will admit the underquilt needs the protection of a tarp (which I had, but I need a bigger one) from the wind, but I was plenty warm in the low 20s. These top and bottom quilts along with a hammock have changed my way of thinking when it comes to backpacking. I may never sleep in a tent again!

  • Like a Charm!

    by Luis Garcia – 29th Nov 2015

I used it on a night that hit 28 degrees and it was amazing. It was my first time to use it and I'm sold that this under quilt will always be there for me to keep warm.

  • As usual, exceeded exceptions

by Steve Skinner (Mule) – 17th Nov 2015

I was amazed at how much 2 ounces of overfill filled the quilt up. I love it.

  • Service and products beyond compare!

    by smklogic – 16th Nov 2015

Like the other reviews state, their products and services are top notch. I ordered the first quilt thinking it might be a little short but they are true to their claimed sizes and I overestimated what I needed in length. I contacted them immediately and requested an exchange for a slightly shorter quilt to save a few grams and also added few custom modifications. Harry contacted me directly and confirmed the custom order and said there would be no charge for the inconvenience. Wow! He also remembered I needed this before a planned hike. They quilt came the morning of the hike, would’ve been the day before but USPS messed up in routing the package. I tested it on the AT that weekend when the temps dropped to 30 degrees. I also ordered their Burrow 40 top quilt. I had to take off an outer top layer I was too hot! Just a wool t-shirt, and super light wt fleece and long pants, no base layer and had to loosely cover myself with the quilt or I would start overheating. The under quilt easily adjusts to have a snug fit up under your shoulders and legs to keep out the draft. That’s key. Great job guys! Thanks much!

  • Easy to use and works great!

    by Thomas P. – 14th Nov 2015

I purchased the incubator 20 in the long version because I'm 6,4. I have used it now twice and love how light it is and how easy it attaches to the hammock. The temps were in the low 40's one night and low 30's another night. I was comfortable and warm each time. I weighs a little more then a pound and packs down small. I highly recommend this product!

  • You wonte regret it

    by Ken Reeves – 14th Nov 2015

Excellent workmanship! Delivered product to me in half the time promised. Just had it on an outing with upper 20's first night and -4 second night. First night was warm as toast, second night a little cool. I added 2oz of fill to standard spec which I recommend. GREAT PRODUCT!.

  • Superior quality and personal service

    by Todd – 14th Nov 2015

Purchased the Incubator 20 with 2 extra ounces of fill. Had a trip coming up fast and needed it earlier than the planned date. Harry was very accommodating and was able to expedite the order to meet my date. Personal pickup allowed me to see the production and meet the dedicated employees who make these great quilts. I was able to test the quilt immediately with temps in the 30s and was perfectly comfortable. I can't wait to push the limits of this quilt as winter approaches.

  • Exceptional quality

    by Marshal Kline – 13th Nov 2015

I'm not yet an experienced hammock'er, but as compared to my first underquilt purchase from another maker (which is also of very high quality), this quilt is even better in terms of quality and design. Based on a lot of shopping and research, you can find good quilts for a little less, but when you add in HG qualities and features, I don't know of anyone better.

  • Looks great

    by Tim – 12th Nov 2015

I just got my incubator 20 with 2 ounce over stuff. Now I have to say that it looks great the craftsmanship is excellent. I was a little surprised to see that even with 2 ounces of overstuff and the regular 15-20% overstuff that HG says goes into each UQ it did not seem to be too stuffed. I hope that it can take me down into the -15C range as I am planning a winter trip this year. I well review more after my trip.

  • Far more comfortable than a camp pad

    by Matthew – 10th Nov 2015

Though I haven't used this quilt in extreme temperatures yet, I will be soon. It's kept me cozy warm for several weeks now in temps as low as 30° and I intend to spend the entire northern Ohio winter outdoors in the Incubator20.

I was previously using a yoga mat and sleeping bag, but this is far more comfortable, and much warmer. I have a top quilt on the way, and I'm sure this will keep me toasty far beyond its rated limit.

  • Wife is HAPPY!!

    by Andy – 2nd Nov 2015

Purchased this after reading all the reviews. Jenny helped get my order out quickly. THANK YOU, JENNY!!! Wife is happy! She said it was instantly warm on a cold windy day. Setup was easy, used Ridgeline hooks to help stabilize UQ under hammock. Great product and EXCELLENT service! Keep it up, guys!!!

  • Toasty warm

    by Todd – 29th Oct 2015

Received my incubator 20 quickly and just love it!

  • incubator 20 uq with 2 oz overstuff

    by Unknown – 27th Oct 2015

Only had two nites on this AT trip
After 2nd nite, felt like i had her dialed in well
Had practiced set up/adjustments at home but in very warm temps
The trail at this time was unusually warm, only down to 40 or so
The uq performed well and was significantly more comfortable than the blue pad i was using
Was very satisfied with my purchase

  • Stop looking and just order it.

    by Unknown – 14th Oct 2015

Like everyone else I will tell you to just order it, you absolutely won't regret it. I've only had the opportunity to try it once so far but it got down to 30° outside, I woke up to a nice frost on the ground but toasty warm inside my hammock, had to uncover a few times because I was sweating. Quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and customer service are top notch. Can't wait to use it again next weekend at the NEHHA Great Pumpkin hang.

  • great workmanship

    by Jesse G – 11th Oct 2015

Recently purchased this underquilt and wanted to wait to use it before reviewing it. The product itself appears to have been produced with care and attention to detail. The materials are light weight and effective. There was a bit of dew on the issue of the uq this morning but a simple pat and it was dry. It kept me warm throughout the night (though operating well above its rating) and at times I could almost get away without using anything else (ie sleeping bag).

The only negative I have found is the lack of instructive materials. Though relatively straight forward, I feel I would have benefited from having some guidelines on how to affix it to my hammock.

  • Don't Look Any Where Else

    by Ian C – 10th Oct 2015

I needed an underquilt fora spur of the moment trip and Harry told me they could get it done. Sure enough I got the hammock in time and wasn't charged any rush fee - so I'm very impressed with the customer service!

The underquilt worked amazingly well. I was up at 8000 ft north of the San Francisco peaks in AZ, with overnight lows at freezing temps and wind was blowing me to nearly 30 degree angles during the night - but I was ridiculously comfortable. Hammock Gear won my future business hands down!

  • Less weight, more warmth!

    by SC20 – 10th Oct 2015

Awesome product! I bought one to replace the cumbersome, much heavier Hennessy Super Shelter underquilt system and man am I glad I did! Although Hennessy makes a great product, this surpasses it when you consider the weight to warmth ratio. As many of you know, every ounce counts when back packing but you'd rather not have to compromise warmth and comfort, well here is the answer! You will NOT be disappointed! HG, Adam and Jenny are a pleasure to work with! I'm buying another one for my son! :)

  • Excellent, but one suggestion.

    by Isaac – 5th Oct 2015

I just spent a week in 20-40 degree temps in Alberta. Incubator 20 worked great and i'm confident would have taken me to much colder conditions (i slept in my underwear only with a 20 deg. sleeping bag as an overquilt). Only reason for 4 stars is that the first night was uncomfortable because I didn't connect the S-Hooks high enough up the hammock suspension, which created too much sag. After fixing that and adding a small 8' bungie connection between the side triangle hooks toward the foot end, I had a perfect set-up. Would be great if Hammock Gear offered some set-up instructions/suggestions on website or in packaging. Nights 2-7 were excellent and I'm very confident that my future use will be as satisfactory.

  • Wow

    by alpinepete – 27th Sep 2015

Love this quilt. Never a cold spot. Flawless construction.

  • like sleeping in a downy cloud of warmth

by Steve wolfsburg armstrong (United Kingdom) – 25th Sep 2015

After much research and general knosing around I decided to order the incubator 20 from hammock gear all the reviews had me more excited than a kid before Christmas but until you actually lay in one you will never know the true bliss of its downy goodness! Also can I just say the hammock gears sales team are some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to deal with nothing was too much trouble and the turn around for a custom quilt was almost super human thanks Hammock gear!

  • very nice!

    by Unknown – 24th Sep 2015

After doing research and reading reviews I purchased an incubator 20...took about 3 weeks to get it and I'm impressed...I haven't got to try it cause it's just not cold enough yet where I live...but the quality is second to none...

  • Yup!

    by Mike – 23rd Sep 2015

I have tried a number of lesser priced alternatives to staying warm in my hammock...you think I would learn already! My Incubator 20 is by far the best piece of equipment that I put in my pack when I head out into the woods. Awesome quality and great service! Thank you guys!!!

  • Wow

    by Kevin Parenteau – 23rd Sep 2015

The incubator 20 is the first under quilt I've owned, I feel lucky someone recommended HG. I saved a little money but the greatest thing is I got a superior product. I love the color combo, and material is amazing, can't wait to hit the woods this fall to use this incredible product, Hammock Gear you've earned & got a lifetime customer out of me!!!

  • must have!

    by Unknown – 20th Sep 2015

Ive tried it all with hammocks and these underquilts r the only way to go! Sleep like a baby in the cold! I have 2. One i use with an eno and one with jungle hammock. Took them on motorcycle trip. worked perfect. The one ive owned over a year now. Made it through a 9 day elk hunt trip in colorado rockies. Stayed above 9000 ft, and worked great!

  • Incubator 20

    by Joachim Kreutzfeldt – 18th Sep 2015

I brought my incubator 20 on a three day hike to sweden as soon as it was delivered. I didnt have time to test it, and was a bit nervous because it was my first experience with an uq.
I had no problem with the setup, and slept like a baby. Great product, and super customer service!! I will definately never go back to using a pad.

  • Don't go backcountry without it

    by Michael Breitenstein – 11th Sep 2015

I ordered my UQ 20 with an extra oz. of down to use in the Sierras at 7,500ft and up from spring through the fall. I used it for the first time this past Labor Day weekend on a night that got down to 36F, not extremely cold but a good chance to try it out. It was really easy to set up on my Hennessy Expedition Hammock. By 9pm after some star gazing I was ready to turn in. To my surprise I was way too hot at first but a little loosening of the suspension to allow a little more air through and I was comfortable all night. No more cold butt! The quality is excellent and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. Looking forward to using my UQ as the temps begin to drop and see how low of a temp I can remain comfortable in.
Thanks Hammock Gear for the quick turn around on my order and the great craftsmanship of your product.

  • Great UQ, would buy again...initial odor however...

    by Will – 8th Sep 2015

A well made quilt that I would definitely buy again. First use was in a very humid climate and the odor from the down was quite powerful. The odor has started to subside and will be a non-issue in a little while.

I am 6'2" and 185lbs and the standard size is perfect.

  • It's a must have

    by John White – 19th Aug 2015

I just purchased my UQ 20 and it is flawless. The quality is top notch. I have only tested it out in mid 70's temp. Can't wait for it to get cooler so I can temp test it.

Now to those on the fence about getting one... Just do it... it's a must have for Hammock campers. Yes it is a expensive piece of gear and it is the most rewarding piece of gear. HG underquilt has exceeded every expectation from shipping/quality/warmth/satisfaction. I will be getting my top quilt next.

  • Top quality gear

    by Unknown – 5th Aug 2015

Excellent quality on the under quilt . Very easy to attach to hammock and adjust as needed. Very light weight. Customer service is excellent as advertised. Had a slight problem with the suspension cord and was shipped out a new one. Could have shipped the under quilt back to have HG do the repair but I didn't want to part with it as it was a simple fix. I would highly recommend if your thinking of an under quilt to go with HG. Price is as awesome as the product. 5'8" and went with a standard with no overfill as I am a very warm sleeper. Should be perfect for the fall and spring hikes maybe even some winter hanging!

  • 3+ Seasoned uder quilt.

    by Slowski – 4th Aug 2015

Well made and very easy to adjust to my hammock. A bit too warm for summer use but should be adequate for fall and early winter use in the Northeast.

  • High Quality

    by Sarah – 21st Jul 2015

So happy with the Incubator 20! The quality is amazing! Every stitch is perfect. It's very light and easily packs up and sets up. I got my order quickly and was super happy with the purple color! Love it! I'm glad I emailed before ordering to get help deciding what size to get... I'm 5'4" so I got the Short and it's perfect.

  • No pads needed

    by Scott Payne – 13th Jul 2015

I Have been using pads since I started hammocking. It is a large investment for the under quilt. I have been working on a budget and learning how to make my own equipment but the under quilt was something I was not comfortable doing. I made one attempt to make a synthetic under quilt but wasn't happy with results. I am very happy with my purchase. What a difference. Thank you for the excellent product.

  • awesome

    by Eric Mathieu – 9th Jul 2015

    What else to say?
The service and communication are at the top. The quality of the product is perfect.
In the 2 weeks I had mine, I did a 2 and a 3 day trip. Ordered a second one for my wife who took mine. I will not go back to a pad for anything. The comfort, the adjustability of the quilt is marvelous. I cannot thank HG enough. And the shipping time was less than 3 days after ordering. We are talking custom order now. I will order my 3rd one for my kid as soon as I can. Looking at jumping for the top quilt hopefully next year. I am converted to HG.
Did I say I love it?

  • Non-stop satisfaction!

    by Eric Owens – 29th Jun 2015

I bought this 20* UQ in order to extend my opportunities for using my hammock throughout the year. Previously, I was limited to use that could be called 2-season. I have not been at all disappointed.

This purchase was made at the same time that I ordered an 40* TQ, both with an over stuff of down. This past December of 2014, I went on a weekend trip that took the temps down to 15* and both quilts did not leave me at all wanting more warmth (I did sleep in my full clothing using wool baselayer, etc.). I would not have much concern for going to 10* under the same circumstances. Even during warmer outings into the low 70's or high 60's, I have not been disappointed.

My satisfaction with Adam's and Jenny's craftsmanship has only increased the likelihood that I will be asking for some expressly custom work in the very near future.

  • Very cool design updates!

    by Fibby – 19th Jun 2015

I ordered this for my boyfriend based on how happy I am with mine. I am very impressed with the draft collars and double elastic suspension. Mine is an older model and I am very happy with its performance but I am a little jealous of the new mods. Can' wait to give it a real test!

  • Double Down on HG!

    by Benjamin/T-minus@hammockforums.net – 18th Jun 2015

I ordered a 20Incubator (Dark Olive Drab/Black short) For my WBBB XLC, Top marks, exceeds all expectations and would say hands down the best piece of gear I owned until I received my 20Burrow (Multi-camo/ Burnt Orange Wide/Standard Sewn), now they both are the best gear I own. I received my orders fast, (9/6 Days Inc/Burrow) and beyond the quality I visualized from the pictures I've seen in making my selection, and I'm Super Pleased, They even matched the stuff-sack per my request. I love it. Thanks HG, you Have added warm fuzzies to my hart and to my Hang. I'm glad I double downed.

  • HG

    by Jason Hribik – 16th Jun 2015

You can never go wrong with any HG product, fast, perfect sevice everytime. The incubator is exactly as expected, warm, light and compact.

  • Great quality

    by Unknown – 15th Jun 2015

Looks great, packs down easily and looks warm. Can't wait to get out and try it.

  • Feeling hot, hot, hot...

    by Johan / born2roam – 15th Jun 2015

I bought my incubator in 2013, after more then 2 years of great service, I finally took the time to write this review. First of all because I promised to leave a review, but most important of all, because the people at HG deserve big BIG complements for creating such a fine product.

With custom (signal) orange on the inside {just in case] and black on the outside this has been the centre of attention on many a hang! It packs small, is super warm and of great quality.

The several options of hanging and adjusting the underquilt got me confused for a bit but I quickly got the hang of it (sic) :-)

Highly recommended! I use it all the time, unless the season calls for my Baby Orca used on its own. Which, by the way I add to the incubator if temperatures drop sufficiently.

  • Home Improvements, worth doing

    by Neil's in... – 5th Jun 2015

Hi all, I purchased this to replace my inadequate Hennessey 4 season kit. Many cold nights suffered before biting the bullet.

So this is my first down filled under quilt, still haven't had a chance to test it in the cold cold, my hammock is currently my home for the next 6 months and this home improvement pays for itself. Last night I was sweating in the mountains of Washington (Chinook pass).

My word of warning to those who have not used one of these quilts before, be sure to tighten the elastics crazy tight, previous night was experiencing a midnight chilly patch due to insufficient tightness.

  • nothing here to dislike

by SP from Utah – 17th May 2015

I was on the fence for a long time about getting an under quilt. I don't get out as often as I'd like so was avoiding dropping the coin and just using a pad. It was adequate and better than being on the ground, but fussy even with a pad in a double layer hammock. So bit the bullet and went with the Incubator, figuring that these have an excellent reputation such that potential resale wouldn't be a problem. Have had it out for several nights in the Rockies, including a night with mixed cold rain, hail and snow. Slept comfortably and warm in the 20 degree Incubator. First time setup was actually very easy with minimal tweaking. Nothing to complain about here...

  • finally no cold

    by Bill Y – 14th May 2015

Tried all the cheap ways to keep the cold (even cool) out. Finally bit the bullet and bought this UQ. Should have years ago. Finely made, great service, great quality.
    Go ahead and buy one.

  • great

    by L.h. – 12th May 2015

So far so good! It's definitely warm! I've only tested it out a few times but I'm about to take it on a trip to Colorado. I only wish it came with slightly clearer instructions or a video demo online since I'm still not sure if I have it set up right with the cords on the end, but I figured out something that seems to work. I also wish the blue color was a brighter blue but the color doesn't matter that much. Seems like a great quality product, I'm very happy I got it!

  • review for my second Incubator Underquilt

    by Scott Turskey – 2nd May 2015

Simply said...top notch and well done....great service....if I was going to buy another. ..it would be a product from Hammock Gear. ...just might do that soon...for my third hammock. Cannot go wrong with this company! !! Just Exceptionally done.

  • Second Incubator even better...if its possible

    by Henry Hibbs – 30th Apr 2015

About 2 years ago, and after a lot of research, I pulled out the money I been saving up and bought a 20 degree Incubator Underquilt to use with my Warbonnett Blackbird hammock. My decision to get the full length Incubator vs. The Phoeunix was based on the weight spread and simplicity. To me the weight spread wasn't worth the hassle of taking foam padding and worrying about my lower legs. In backpacking many times in late fall, winter and early Spring in the Southern Appalachians with this UQ, I found the 20 degree rating to be very accurate. At 15 degrees I was still warm. Adam guaranteed me the rating was conservative and he was exactly right. I am a cold sleeper in the winter and a hot sleeper in the summer...but this 20 degree quilt is great for a long packing season through 3 seasons at least. I sewed Dutch quilt hooks onto my Blackbird to keep the Incubator exactly where I want it particularly on my left shoulder and feet in the foot box. It saved me a lot of tinkering on the coldest nights.
A few weeks ago I ordered another Incubator...this time with black Argon 90 on the outside and Cinnamon brown Argon 67 on the inside. I also added 2 oz. of down overfill but Adam also altered the baffles to a 10 degree "cut. The quality on both these quilts is just extraordinary. When we arent backpacking or camping, my wife and I use these Incubators as a personal full length personal quilts. Ive had the 10 degree I cubator on a 4 day pack trip on my Blackbird XLC and I have not doubt it will take me down to the 5-10 degree range . Thank you Adam for the integrity you bring to the hammocking community. When tent campers ask me if they can give my hammock rig a try my only concern is that when they snuggle in between my HG Incubator and my Zero degree HG Burrow they may never want to get back out. Mornings in the on the trail , I hate to get out of my hammock because I feel like I'm floating in a envelope of warm down.

Never hesitate to select Hammock Gear products ...they have always retained the best reputation because they never will do you wrong . Their gear will last a lifetime.

  • The best

    by Tim – 28th Apr 2015

First I would like to say I'm not good at writing reviews and don't write many but after using this quilt I had to.

Hands down the best customer service in the business spent time talking with Adam and Harry to get exactly what I needed.

The quality of workmanship is great not a stich out of place no down leakage it's perfect.
The best thing of all it worked as advertised kept me very warm on a cold wet (very wet ) night in the Cranberry Wilderness , the best piece of gear ive taken to the woods in a long time

Adam, Harry I woul like to personally thank you, HG is my one stop shop for my outdoor gear. It people like you two that make my 30 years of service in the military worth it.

    Thank you Tim.

P.S. I'll be sending more people your way.

  • tremendous service, high quality

    by Unknown – 17th Apr 2015

I originally made an order for a 30 degree quilt, but the next day I had second thoughts and asked if they could make it a 20. Not only did they change the order for me but I still got my quilt six days after I ordered. And not only that, the quilt is tremendous quality. Top of the line service, top of the line craftsmanship, and a super low price considering the quality and materials.

  • One and Done

    by Johnny B – 16th Apr 2015

This is my first under quilt and more than likely my last. Being new to hammock camping I did an extensive search through didffernt forums, websites, YouTube channels and found nothing but praise for the Incubator. After camping two nights in the outer banks of NC, I now know why, this thing is awesome.
Taking it out of the box I was leary because it's so lightweight and can pack so small. After allowing it to loft for a few minutes I attached to my Nylon Hammock and immediately noticed how warm this UQ was. I've only used it twice so far but can't imagine it getting worse. The nights got to a low of 52 and all I needed was a sheet over the top of me. This UQ alone was all I really needed to keep and maintain warmth.
I like how easy it is to adjust and move/slide while laying down. No need to get out. I only attached it to my cinch buckles and have o need to secure it to my ridgeline.
The company went above and beyond to make sure I would have this in time for an upcoming trip. I will definitely keep coming back for any other hammock camping needs I may have.
If you are skeptical about the price... why buy something you'll regret later and end up spending more money? If hammock camping is something your into, this is a necessity.

  • loving the incubator 20

    by Unknown – 10th Apr 2015

It have only used my incubator 20a few times as yet, but so far it is absolutely wonderful. The first time I set it up it took a while to figure out the new suspension system. After some trial and error I got the set up I needed for the way I sleep. Adjusting it while in your hammock is as easy as racking around and giving a tug here or a pull there. That first not it was 41 degrees and I was almost too hot. The next night it was low 40s again and I was very comfortable. The last two nights I spent we had some severe thunderstorms. I was a little uneasy hanging between 2 trees with all that lightning flashing around me. I was swinging in the wind but never lost the insulating comfort of the incubator. I eminence it highly. I liked it so much that I bought the burrow 20 top quilt to go with it. It arrived today in the mall. I plan on spending the night in my hammock using them both. Thunderstorms on the radar again. Wish me luck.

  • Awesome Product

    by Chris M – 6th Apr 2015

I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of shopping. I wasn't really sure about dropping the cash on an underquilt. I took the plunge and between the Incubator 20 and my Sierra Designs down sleeping bag, I slept very comfortably all night down to 25 degrees F. I probably could have taken it down another 15 degrees and would have been just fine.

The product is well made. The suspension works great at pulling the underquilt up underneath you with no air pockets.

My only complaint is that it took 3 weeks to get to me. In this day of 2-day-Amazon-shipping, I have high expectations. But I understand the nature of this product and this company. I highly recommend HAMMOCK GEAR!

  • Anyone who owns a hammock should get one.

    by Greg – 5th Apr 2015

I just finished a two week job at a remote lakeside cabin. I had to leave before the underquilt arrived. Using a closed cell foam mattress underneath me that was only 20" wide left me having quite a bit of cold spots throughout the night. I came home for a night and my new quilt showed up. I was excited to use it and let me tell you.. This thing was perfect. So easy to set up and the fit was great with my single person hammock. The last two nights I used it the temperatures dropped down into the low to mid 30's. My face was cold but it kept me warm and toasty. I was using my 15 degree sleeping bag as a top quilt but I will be purchasing a hammock gear top quilt here soon.

If you are having trouble deciding whether or not to get one? I did and I wish I would have purchased one sooner. Great quality and easy to use. I will never sleep on the ground again if I can help it.

  • Nice and toasty!

    by Laura D. – 4th Apr 2015

I went camping last weekend and the temperatures were between 20° and 30° and windy. Half of me was really warm - the half lying against the hammock. Unfortunately, the rest of me was cold, even with a good sleeping bag.
The underquilt's material is very thin, it makes me think of plastic grocery bags. It appears to be able to withstand abuse, but I don't intend to test that out. What is really impressive is how easily it packs down to such a small size. I associate stuff sacks with struggling to get the last bit in, but not with the underquilt!
    I highly recommend this product.

  • Like sleeping on a warm cloud

    by Earle J – 1st Apr 2015

I bought the incubator 20 short for my partner. Haven't given it to her yet.. Still "testing" it. She's a cold sleeper even in the warmest of nights. I think she will be very pleased with this product. Your craftsmanship is second to none. Loved the draft tubes top and bottom . Better order myself one so I can surprise my partner with this awesome fluffy warm cloud. Cheers

  • Amazingly Warm

    by Tommy (Eagle) – 30th Mar 2015

Have used the Incubator 20 for years now, been down to 10 before and still was very comfortable. Just purchased a new one for my son to use, it was 17 this past weekend and he was so amazed at how warm he stayed. The quality is second to none!!!

  • Simply the Best of the Best!

    by Sardog1 – 14th Mar 2015

First impressions of the Incubator 20° Long (Woodland Camo) are nothing but positive. Close inspection reveals stitch perfection, attention to detail and a well thought out design. The suspension system allows for nearly infinite adjustment with no unwanted sag. Since I just received the UQ, I can't honestly comment on performance in various temps but at first glance, I know it's going to perform well.

Thanks to the crew at Hammock Gear for producing top notch gear and their stellar customer support for the hammock community.

  • Very Warm

    by Mattgyver – 7th Mar 2015

This quilt is amazing, kept me way warmer than my friend in his 300 dollar ENO quilt. Temps got down to the mid 20's, with snow and freezing rain, kept warm all 3 nights! Quick delivery, and very good customer service. They were able to get it to me way before my planned trip, and at short notice. Thank you guys! I will be recommending you guys!

Thank HG for your exceptional services, allowing me to continue on adventuring!

  • What to improve on...

    by Unknown – 13th Feb 2015

The good: stitching, baffles, fill power, customer service, speed.

Needs improvement: Pictures, Pictures, Pictures. Underquilt Could be a little wider.

    The bad: nothing.

This one or the competition.? For an underquilt I sligly liked this one better. I liked the profile of the quilt including the differential cut, the baffles, the lighter fabric.

  • Awesome Product

    by Piratekiller – 6th Feb 2015

Love it!!! I got my incubator a couple of weeks ago and finally got to take it out. My buddies and I went up to Newport State park in Door County, WI for the weekend. It was dark the first night when I set it up so of course being my first time with it I did it wrong and froze :( The next morning when it was light out. I noticed my problem and was able to set it up correctly. It dropped from 40 deg down to 12 that night. I was toasty warm in my hammock that night! Long story short I love this under quilt and recommend it to anyone looking at getting one. I cant wait to get back out to use it.

  • Simply the best!

    by Bryan – 5th Feb 2015

My brother and I each got a 20 deg. incubator. They are amazing! We both researched independently and came up with this UQ. Look around and compare. These are the best, period! We've used them down to 19. Been in the 20s multiple times, and I always sleep well. I've also used as warm as the upper 50s and am still comfortable. Super well made! Is $250 a lot of money? Sure, but look at comparable sleeping bags and UQs. The Incubator is a BARGAIN given the quality. And top-notch customer service to boot. Stop reading this and order one now!!

  • Top Quality

    by Robert C. – 2nd Feb 2015

I have not had a chance to take this into the field and have only used it once in the back yard. The temp was in the low 30’s and when I laid in the hammock I could immediately feel the warmth coming through. I was wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants and new immediately that I would be warm all night. This is a high quality piece of gear and great customer service. Jenny and her crew took the time to answer my questions and help me out with the proper selection and size. My only suggestion would be the addition of larger storage bag for the time between hikes. This piece of kit is highly recommended!

  • Incubator 20 +2oz overstuff

    by Richard – 30th Jan 2015

After reviewing different styles and types of underquilts, I finally chose hammock gear. I am glad that I did. The worksmanship is exeptional, and easy to adjust.

I took this on a hammock hang with some friends. This year was not as cold (32 degrees) with light wind. I purchased the Incubator 20 with +2 oz Overstuff. It performed well and I was warm.
Be sure to hang your hammock at the recomended 25-30 degree angle or manufacturers specs. Not doing so may allow some of the bundle to be tighter than the rest, resulting in lifting. Or causing some of the hammock to bear the weight while the rest sags some. The side of the quilt that goes against the hammock is flat. You want to be sure your hammock is flat against it.
I am planning on using my hammock inside my apartment and it can be a year around thing.

  • Incubator 20

    by Craig Lambert – 28th Jan 2015

Every now and then you run into a product that the class leader.....the Incubator is one such product. It is unquestionably designed and constructed at the highest quality possible. It is evident that Adam and crew have incorporated extensive research and testing into the design and build. I highly recommend the incubator for any hammock camper. The unit comes with a packable bag that in minimal in size and of high quality construction. One suggestion would be to add a larger storage bag when quilt is not being packed for the trail. I have not used the quilt in the field yet but do not anticipate any problems based on extensive previous reviews. I did have trouble receiving the exact quilt that I ordered and had to return the first shipment. For some reason I received different colors than ordered and the gross grain was coming off the corner of the quilt. However, exchange was quick and painless; return shipping was covered by Hammock Gear. Again, this is class leader and is highly recommended.

  • I Love It!!

    by Rifleman – 15th Jan 2015

I tried the pad method, but did not like it. Finally took the plunge and bought the Incubator 20. So far I have slept through a 26 deg night and was toasty warm. (That is the coldest temps I have seen in my part of Texas since I got it.) Took me a bit to save for this purchase, but it is well worth it. Thanks!!

  • Hammock Bliss!

    by AndyU – 8th Jan 2015

Ordered the 20 with 2oz overstuff for my nx-250. Customer service was awesome but overshadowed by the greatness of the under quilt. I finally tested it last night in 3 degree temps and howling wind. I used my 15 degree bag as a top quilt. I had on long underwear and a down sweater. I was cozy all night. It fits perfect on the clark and was easy to adjust. The little plastic d rings on the quilt makes it easy to adjust if needed. I see a 0 degree in my future.

  • No More Cold Butt Syndrom

    by Patty Gaunce` – 3rd Jan 2015

I purchased the Incubator 20 Short with 4 extra ounces of fill. I am normally a cold sleeper even in the summer. Not any more. My plan to use my hammock every month is now possible. No matter how cold it is outside. Inside the hammock with the Incubator underquilt. there will be no CBS. Used it for the first time just after Christmas 2014. at 22 degrees F. Slept straight through the night no problems. Thank you Jenny for the great customer service and prompt replies to emails. Hammock Gear Rocks!

  • Great Customer Service

    by Kaytieann – 2nd Jan 2015

I ordered the Incubator 20 for my nephew only 2 weeks before Christmas and didn't really expect it to arrive in time for Christmas. When I ordered the item I was told that these quilts are made to order and it normally takes three weeks to assemble and ship them. The gentleman I spoke with said he would try his best to get it shipped in time for Christmas but it probably wasn't very likely to happen. The item was shipped in less than a week and arrived in plenty of time for Christmas. Thank you so much Hammock Gear!
The quilt is compact and light weight and seems to be of good quality. I can't comment on how well it works in the cold, as my nephew has not yet used it.

  • Quality Assembly

by Runs with Sissors – 24th Dec 2014

I ordered the Incubator 20 with +1oz of fill to satisfy my curiosity. I am traditionally a MYOG kind of guy, always tweaking everything and never satisfied. There is a lot of talk about the Incubator 20 being the "GO-TO" UQ. I had to try it out for myself.

I have to say this quilt was put together well. The stitching is not only functional, but purdy too.

I tried it out the same night I received it in the Linville Gorge. It did not get cold enough to really put it through the paces. I was hoping for some low 20's or teens, but no luck. I initially had some cold spots and had to play around with the suspension, but that's the case with any UQ.

By my nature, I already have some mods in mind. I hate all the cordage on UQs, so I have some thoughts to incorporate some of Dutch's hardware into my UQ set up to eliminate the cordage. It's in my head right now, but I'll post an update on the forum when I figure it out. Again, nothing wrong with the quilt, just my constant urge to tweak everything.

The quilt is quite compact and light. Much lighter than my DIY UQ.

It didn't loft as much as I expected, but I don't care as long as I hit my expected temps.

I tried my Incubator 20 on my Hennessy Explorer Dlx and my DIY gathered end hammock. It work fine with both with some adjustments.

Praying for some downright fridgid temps for my hike in January at Uwharrie with my TLUSA troop.

Thanks again Adam for the quality work! I will be back for my next top quilt.

    Walk Worthy!

  • hg incubator 20 +1oz

    by runswithsissors – 24th Dec 2014

I received my HG Incubator 20 w +1oz and strung it up for a camping trip to Linville Gorge that very weekend. Adam worked with me because of a shortage in my 1st choise of fabric because of supply issues. I'm not picky, so I chose another subdued color an he got it right out to me.

I already see some improvements I want to make to fit my own liking. Nothing wrong with the quilt, I'm just particular. I don't like any corded suspension system an am thinking of incorporating some of Dutch's hardware to my UQ to attach directly to my hammock. It's all in my head right now, so I'll work it out and post on Hammock Forum. I'm a DIY kind of guy, but wanted to try the incubator since it has such a large following on the forum.

I have used it with my DIY hammock and my Hennessey Explorer Deluxe. Both work fine.

Stitching is to notch! It's no only functional, but purdy, too.

This was what I expected. I was hoping for colder temps to put it through its paces. But I can't control the weather.

Great job Adam! I'll be back for my next TQ.

    by Josh Camp – 19th Dec 2014

I have bought a lot of products from "cottage manufacturers" and although I have had nothing but awesome experiences, this purchase exceeded all my expectations. I'm truly appreciative with regard to the high level of attention to detail and overall customer service. I ordered a 20 degree Incubator in black (which I would guess is their most popular model) on a Sunday with a note included that I was hoping to use it on a trip just 8 days later. Honestly, Considering that it was a specialty product shipping from Ohio to Georgia, I did not expect to have it in time for my trip. I was extremely impressed when it showed up on day #5. I was able to use it on my trip to Seattle where I spent the night at Ranier and the Olympic National Forest in temps down to the 30's. It was super easy to set up and I was toasty every night with nothing more than an open sleeping bag. Thank you so much for the attention to detail and logistical efficiency. You have a customer for life.

I used this under a Warbonnet Black Bird fit easily and as snug as a bug.
I was using the 20 Incubator around the 50'S so of coarse I was perfectly warm. I can not wait to give it a try close to the true temperature rating.. I set this up so easily

  • Accurate temp ratings

    by Tucker – 27th Nov 2014

After one night out using my Burrow 20 TQ and a foam pad in the high 30s and ending up with a cold back, I decided to pull the trigger on an Incubator 20. I took this out backpacking in WV last weekend and slept VERY comfortably in the 20s. I was toasty warm all night. I thought it had only gotten down into the 30s at night, but when I woke up to my water bottle frozen solid I realized it had gotten pretty cold. Sleeping with an underquilt is so much more comfortable and hassle free than sleeping with a pad. If you are thinking about buying a top quilt and holding off on an underquilt, don't. You don't know what you will be missing out on. The build quality on this quilt is 100% perfect. I even lost the stuff sack after testing it out one afternoon and they shipped me a new one free of charge after I ASKED to buy it from them. That is what I call customer service!

  • First time out - 24 degrees

by Bill in Georgia – 18th Nov 2014

I just bought two 20 degree incubators - one for me and one for my 14 year old son. I bought it based on the recommendations of a friend who has been hanging with an incubator for a year or so. The underquilts can in the mail about 2 weeks ago. When we unpacked them, I was impressed with the build quality. I set up my hammock and new Incubator in the back yard and lauded in it for about 15 minutes before I had to deal with a work issue. Dang job!

The first real time we got to use the Incubators, was on a Boy Scout camp out this past weekend. As luck would have it, a cold front moved in and the temperatures dipped into the mid 20s. It got down to 24 degrees . Previously, my son was using pads and I had a 3/4 length underquilt. Both of us slept nice and warm all night long (including using a hot Nalgene water bottle for a little extra warmth). Even with a breeze coming in off the Lake, I was comfortable all night long. For me, Hammock Gear's product temperature ratings are conservative.

I would highly recommend Hammock Gear's products. I look forward to many season's of use out of my Incubator.

  • Does what it says

by Blaze (Hammock Forum) – 15th Nov 2014

After speaking with Adam I decided to order the Incubator 20 degree underquilt for a quick November over night. Adam was able to get the order to me quickly and once getting it in the mail I headed out after work the next day. I ended up having to hike in the dark with a misting rain and temps in the high 30s. Once at the camp site and with cold hands I found the setup extremely easy and intuitive even for me who hadn't ever used an underquilt before...out of the bag, attach two S clips, pull the ends tight and you're set...that easy.

So you'll ask, "did it keep me warm?" Yes. It got down to 32 degrees and I never got "cold butt". I'm 6'2" and the standard length and fill was just fine. The sides come up and around you nicely so I felt surrounded by warmth all night long. Oh, by the way, the wind blew 17mh all night long and I still didn't feel it in the Incubator.

Adam, great job! The product is great and the quality of your work is perfect.

After playing around and getting this under quilt dialed in I stayed very warm on my last section hike on the AT. Very easy to get dialed in on your hammock. Great product and customer service!

  • Better than advertised

Ordered to Incubator 20s for an upcoming trip. I reached out to HG for some advice on use with a specific hammock. I received immediate communication and was asked to take a few measurements of my hammock and email them in. HG then made some adjustments at no cost to me to ensure that the quilt would fit properly. Amazing service. In addition to no cost adjustments, HG also shipped my quilt to me in time for a shorter trip so that I would be able to check the fit and send it back for any necessary adjustments, also at no charge. Well I didn't need to send it back because it fit perfectly the first time around. The performance of the quilt is well documented and I will say that it is warm just as promised. Purchased an Incubator 20 with 2oz of overstuff and I was so warm in 30deg temps I had to pull my topquilt down. Customer for life. I wish I could give them 10 stars.

  • My first UQ

    by Henrik J. alias Snowball on Hammockforums.net – 23rd Oct 2014

I am a new ”hanger” but only two trips with pads convinced me it wasn’t the solution for me. I was considering a DIY under quilt but after a few YouTube videos with down all over the place I was convinced otherwise. Some YouTube videos and reviews later HG products was on top of my list mostly due to craftsmanship. When it arrived I wasn’t disappointed! I know quality when I see it. It is truly craftsmanship. I am impressed by the stitching in this ultra thin material and the details.
I selected the Incubator 20˚ (-6.6°C) with 2 Oz overstuffing because realistically I don’t think I will be hanging much during the winter time and if I do 20°F (-6°C) should be sufficient for most of the time. Winter nights rarely gets colder around here.
For me it was expensive due to import tax but HG is not to be blamed for that. BTW I am from Denmark.
It has been used several times for napping in my “hammock lab” but sadly I haven’t had a chance in the woods yet and won’t get a chance in the next months or so but I cannot imagine I will be disappointed.
I did not really know what to expect regarding the temperature in a UQ because I did not have anything to compare it to. Did not think I could compare it to a sleeping pad and I was right. The first time I tried it was a big surprise like a fire below the hammock for a moment and then the temperature stabilizes. No regrets here.

    Keep up the good work.
    Greetings from Denmark
