Incubator Econ 0

Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Incubator Econ 0˚

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Incubator Econ 0° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  With 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 0°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Incubator Econ comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Incubator Econ comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, storage sack, and a stuff sack.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 8.5 liters, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)
Adjusting a HammockGear Incubator Full Length Underquilt (09:53)
Hammockgear....http://www.hammockgear.com Incubator Underquilt....http://www.hammockgear.com/incubator-20/ I have been wanting to do a video on how to adjust and fit a full length Hammockgear Incubator underquilt. So, I finally got a custom one made so now I can show. It pains me when folks struggle to get the proper fit on a UQ. Hammock camping has a lot of moving pieces and insulation underneath is where most folks fail. My opinion is that UQs are the most difficult part of a hammock system for most people. Hope this gives some helpful insight. Whoooooo Buddy)))) Shug

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant grey duck down on the market in all of our Econ quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

That is one reason why I will only buy from HG, because of the great customer service and the quality and craftsmanship

  • High Quality Product-MADE IN USA!

    by AdventureRex – 24th May 2018

I am very, very proud of this product. It is well worth the wait. For once, I have a Made in USA quality product, not a product of the Chinese Government. Second, Hammock Gear clearly is proud of their products and backs it. Third, it works great in the field. I have no problems staying warm with this product. Thank you for making a commitment to quality, and keeping it here in the USA! I highly recommend this to anyone who owns a hammock.

  • Top quality craftsmanship

by grumpy old man – 21st May 2018

I love the design! The craftsmanship is just unbelievable! I would have expected to pay more for this level of quality.
    Nice Job!
    One very happy customer!

  • WARM

    by Rev – 15th May 2018

Chose to go with the eco under quilt to save a few dollars even though it was a few oz heavier. Used it 3 times, coldest weather so far around 39 degrees so nothing real cold, but what I can tell you is there was no cold spots and you wake up WARM! In fact one night had to fall asleep with no overbuilt because the under quilt was radiating so much heat. I will be buying more products from Hammock Gear for sure!

  • Econ 0 underquilt

Woke up in the morning and felt like a butterfly just coming out of it chrysalis . Couldn't be happier ! Highly recommend this product. Look no further just buy . HAPPY TRAILS , John

  • Top Notch! winter camper? you need this UQ!

    by Unknown – 24th Apr 2018

Proven and tested in a back pack, kayak, friendly helpful service. Was on time and when it was promised! I've borrowed this quilt from a friend that could make the trip and it feels awesome to have my own well done!!!!! Been in this at 8 ° Did NOT WANNA get out of my top quilt and hammock!

  • Fits the bill

    by Jacob Beaven – 1st Apr 2018

For the price of these underquilts it can't be beat. I use it with a Dutchware Chameleon and always staying in place. Have used only twice and each time it got down to the upper 20s and I was extremely toasty each time. Quality and craftsmanship is top notch.

  • Amazing warmth and fit!

    by Greg L. – 26th Mar 2018

First of all, THANK YOU to the HG team!! I needed a bit of a rush on this to make a trip without bumming gear from friends. HG came through in a big way and I've used the UQ a few times since. Once I got it cinched up nicely it worked like an electric blanket! Having an economic version was a huge selling point for me because I don't mind the extra weight/size for the price savings. It's always nice being able to get the top notch gear but it's also nice when you can get a very similar piece of gear without breaking the bank.

  • Best Winter Camping investment!

    by Nathan G. – 19th Feb 2018

I could not be happier with my new Incubator Econ 0! The first night I used this underquilt we hiked deep into the Boundary Waters on the Minnesota/Canadian Border. The outside air temperature dipped to -18 degrees with a strong wind. I was very nervous before climbing in that I would be unable to stay sufficiently warm. Especially since the last time I slept outside in a hammock using only a sleeping mat for my backside I shivered most of the night at 15 degrees. This time at -18, using the same sleeping bag, I slept so warm I had to remove layers throughout the night. I’m embarrassed to say I actually slept in till 1:30pm, this was very frustrating to the rest of the guys as they slept very little that night. The quality is impressive, in fact it’s the best piece of sleeping gear I own.

  • Awesome

    by Robert E Reeser – 4th Feb 2018

Better than I expected. Cannot beat the price for the quality you get !!! Will always shop HG first...

  • Surprisingly light

    by Heather – 1st Feb 2018

I just got this quilt, tried it out back in a shady spot. Its 30degrees today and I was surprised that with just a light blanket on top I started to feel the warmth underneath almost right away. It was also a whole lot lighter than I thought it would be, which has already made me consider getting a top quilt from here too!

  • incubator econ 0° long

    by andrew r – 25th Jan 2018

I started out ordering a 20° and before my order was filled I decided I wanted to change it to a 0°. Hammockgear customer service was top notch in the change order and very communicative throughout the whole process. This is by far the easiest setup of any under-quilt I’ve owned. Without and true adjustments to ensure ends were cinched up 100% properly, I’ve used it on my dream hammock dangerbird for an overnight event at work down to 30° and was toasty. I woke up after a nap to snow all around and it was nice to be warm with that easy setup. I can’t wait to have a friend check and cinch it properly while I lay in hammock and then test it to it’s limits. I feel confident it’ll handle 0° pretty easily. Very happy customer. I’ll be buying a topquilt soon!

  • I never knew a quilt could be this great!!!

    by Ross G – 24th Jan 2018

This is my first real underquilt. I have tried diy, and mass produced synthetic filled quilts. I will never go back. When I first picked up the box on my door step I was absolutely amazed at how light weight it was. And warm, so warm. I can't wait until my top quilt arrives!

  • Excellent product. Quality care

    by Seth – 24th Jan 2018

I was referred to the hammock gear website from an rei worker... Who claimed this is where he gets all his stuff for winter camping. I can see why! Yes under quilt are expensive, but when you sleep out side as much as I do... It's work the price.

Also, the customer service here is outstanding! They answer any of your questions, by phone or email, and they are very responsive. I'm already a repeat customer.

  • Just buy it.

    by Unknown – 12th Jan 2018

I’ll try to keep this short... I’ve had this quilt for a couple weeks now and spent a few nights using it on some short trips. It performs far better than I thought it would, and is easier to set up than some other reviews led me to expect. I’ve tested it down to about 15 degrees (farenheit) and not a single inch of me felt cold all night. This is the ultimate luxury for hammock camping in cold weather. Also, I had some special requests regarding my order, and these guys went far beyond everything I asked of them. Top quality product from a top quality customer service provider. I wouldn’t consider buying any quilt besides a hammock gear quilt.

  • awesome customer service

    by Unknown – 9th Jan 2018

I made this purchase as a birthday present for my brother who is experiencing some very serious health issues. Hammock Gear was very accommodating with getting the Underquilt to me quickly. The underquilt has great craftsmanship and will be utilized for warmth for years to come.

  • Good Deal and Quality

    by Adam – 3rd Jan 2018

You won't find a deal like this for an underquilt anywhere else. The quality is the same to comparable UQ's but for a fraction of the cost. You have to carry a few extra ounces but for this price and quality you won't find anything else like it.

    Great company and great products.

  • Great Company to buy from . Will buy other products from them again

    by Greg Wamsley – 2nd Jan 2018

Top notch company. Very helpful! Bought Incubator Econ 0 UQ. for Eagle Scouts. Excellent to deal with and impressed with order!

  • Awesome!

    by Tim – 27th Nov 2017

I have only had the opportunity to use mine once but it was amazing! Very easy to set up and adjust! I am glad I purchased the long because I had a few inches above my head and past my feet! I was toasty warm down to 30 with just sweat pants and a top fleece blanket. I am taking it out this weekend for a couple nights in the 20s. I will let yall know how it goes.

  • Comfortable Warmth at ECON Price

    by Gregori – 11th Nov 2017

Received both my TQ/UQ just prior to a Fall Hang in Northern Michigan. I was impressed how toasty warm I was without having to fiddle with setup/tuning my quilts. Beyond expectations, have had no second thoughts after a week of hanging experience to confirm how good these quilts really are.

    Thanks HG!!

  • Great product at a great price

    by Nicole – 6th Oct 2017

During a recent section hike, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to try out all of my new gear. The underquilt was extremely comfortable and easy to adjust so there was no draft. I get cold easily and the temperatures varied between 50 and 60 degrees, but the underquilt kept me warm. Can't wait to test out the underquilt in colder temperatures.

  • Warm even in the Rockies

    by Steven – 24th Jul 2017

I recently upgraded to the Incubator Econ 0. I have been thrilled with the purchase! I have never been more comfortable in the hammock. I tested it in the Rockies at 12k ft (usually on the east coast AT) and was very warm. Even the wind was cut by the underquilt. It packs down small enough for my bag and is super easy to set up. Anyone who asks about my set up hears about the Incubator Econ 0 first. Thank you Hammock Gear for making this an affordable option on a non-profit's salary. Keep up the good work!

  • Light, compact, warm!

    by Neil – 12th Jul 2017

I used this down to about 40 degree weather, so I've not had a chance to test it in the blizzards of the mountains, but I was finally warm on the bottom of my hammock after a year or two of trying other options.

I wish I would have just skipped the DIY attempts at things far inferior and had just gone straight with this option. So snuggly!

  • Best Guilt money can buy

    by NC Gene – 22nd May 2017

Love the quality and price. Easy to hook up and adjust, I like it so well I am going to order the Incubaror Econ 40 for the summer months. Hammock Gear made the Incubator Econ 0 and the Burrow Econ 0 and shipped them in only a few weeks. Excellent product and great quality. Thanks Hammock Gear.

  • Snug as a bug

by Johnnie (Hashrowns) Astgen – 18th May 2017

I am totally pleased with the Econ Incubatior 0. I purchased two--one for myself, one for my trail parter/life partner. Super quality, easy to attach and adjust, incredibly snuggly. They just arrived last week, so the only test has been backyard introduction. Lookiing forward to a 3-night wilderness hike this weekend. We will be at 5000-6000 feet--right at the snowline for this time of year. I am confident that nights will be warm!

  • Great Deal

by Thomas (Bankheadboy) Graham – 20th Apr 2017

You can't go wrong with this economy underquilt. It's just as awesome as the more expensive one. If your on a budget this one is made for you and if your not it's still just as Great!

  • Same excellent quality at a better price

    by AlaskaChad – 4th Apr 2017

When the Econ versions of the Incubator and Burrow were released, I picked up a set without hesitation. I already own an original set purchased almost a year ago, and they perform every bit as well as advertised. An additional set for my wife has been planned for this year, and the cost savings of the Econ line without compromising quality of materials or craftsmanship, made the decision easy!

Because I live in Alaska and can't afford a whole range of quilts, I chose 0* quilts. So far, I've used them in temperatures ranging from about 15 to 60* and slept very comfortably. It's easy to vent excess heat in warmer temps, or bundle up in them when it gets cold.

I found that it takes a bit of research and practice to adjust the Incubator properly, but there's good information available. See Shug's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrGfSgt1w2E

Everything I've purchased from Hammock Gear has been top quality and deserving of the high reputation these guys have in the hammock community.
