Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Lead time at the moment is approximately 5-6 weeks, from your purchase date, to ship out new made to order quilts

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Incubator Econ 10˚

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Incubator Econ 10° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  With 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 10°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Incubator Econ comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of goose down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Incubator Econ comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, storage sack, and a stuff sack.

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 8.5 liters, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)

Down

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant grey duck down on the market in all of our Econ quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

Fabric

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

Baffles

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Outstanding!

    by SM – 27th Nov 2017

Outstanding craftsmanship by Hammock Gear! Kept me plenty warm (along with a 20 degree Econ Burrow) on a 3 night trip on the AT in North Carolina where the lows were around freezing each night. Highly recommended to anyone who needs an under quilt.

  • Quilt is 5 stars, stuff sack is 0

    by Dan – 26th Oct 2017

Just used this underquilt. It was great! I'd highly recommend the product. It didn't get as cold in the nights as I thought it would. It was probably only in the 30s. I will be trying it out again later this winter to test the lower limits. The design is very good and easy to use - I'm a bit worried that the cinches in the suspension will fail over time but so far no evidence of that. It is not difficult to get the quilt snug up against my body. Customer service was very prompt and helpful. The only issue was the stuff sack that the company provided. This stuff sack split immediately the first time I was packing up to leave. Fortunately I had another one lying around that I could use. So don't count on using their stuff sack. Other than that, I'd go ahead and get the quilt.

    Response from Hammock Gear:
Thanks so much for the review Dan! We'd happily replace that defective stuff sack if you contact us at sales@hammockgear.com

  • Great Googly Moogly this is AWESOME!

    by Lou – 25th Sep 2017

I got the 10* as a 3/4 season quilt. I have had it under my hammock a few times, and every time I end up taking a nap within a few minutes. The workmanship is top notch. After the 2nd time hanging it under me, I ordered a 20* TQ to match it.

  • nice

    by kyle – 23rd Sep 2017

This is my first underquilt (Econ 10) and I have to say it worked amazing for me in Idaho had nights anywhere from 60-20. F. And I slept great, I had a tarp which I would pitch lower on the cold nights and layer up, but in the future I'll probably buy a warm 0-10 degree topquilt. But overall very impressed with the craftsmanship. Thanks hammock gear!

  • With Hennessy Deep Jungle Asym. Zip

    by Curt – 11th Sep 2017

First off, the quality is superb and the quilt arrived earlier than the 4 week stated time. They even shipped some accessory items for me right away so I could use those for a campout. Great customer support experience.

I was a little concerned when I ordered because I use a Hennessy Hammock and like to use the tie-outs and sleep on the diagonal. When you receive the underquilt, it has multiple bungies coming from each end and can be a little disconcerting. Don’t worry about it, just click the S-biner to your suspension close to where your gathered end is and it will all make sense. When I first installed it and used the pullouts of the hammock, it looked sort of like a banana with wings. I left everything loose and got in the hammock. It almost seemed like it wasn’t wide enough at my shoulders and didn’t cover the top of my feet. I then got out and started to mess with all those bungies. It’s actually pretty simple. There are two main bungies which just support the underquilt to the hammock and allow the underquilt to slide back and forth to align with your hammock. Then there are adjustment bungies, which allow you to adjust which side gets more of the underquilt than the other. This is the one that does the magic. I was able to give my shoulders more underquilt on one side of the diagonal as well as adjust the foot end to have my feet fully covered on the other side of the diagonal. The tie-outs are high enough that the underquilt rises to just below them and the underquilt seems to snug up just fine. The final adjustment is simply some small bungies with a cord lock to tighten up the baffles on each end so you can adjust how much, if any, air you want to pass between the hammock and the quilt (venting). It was a 60 degree day, but with heavy winds (effects of hurricane Irma down in FL). I must say, once I had it dialed in, I could immediately feel the warmth underneath me and couldn’t feel any of the wind passing below me. I stayed in the hammock about a half hour without any top quilt and was perfectly comfortable until I got out. Then I needed a light jacket :)

Once you have it dialed in to your hammock, then setting it up is just a matter of clicking the S-biners on. It would be harder to put a sleeping bag in your hammock than to set this thing up. Supper easy!
Once I get to use this with some colder temps I’ll report back, but till then I’m super stocked about this underquilt.

  • Amazing value, Amazing quilt.

    by Anthony Cialdella – 7th Sep 2017

I recently purchased a "B-Quality" Incubator ECON 10°. I live in Texas, and haven't had the opportunity to truly put it to it's paces, but I do sleep every single night in my hammock inside my home. I've used a 3/4 quilt for the last year and a half, and while sufficient, ultimately my feet were left a bit cool. As someone who's replaced their bed with a hammock (and occasionally takes it outside for camping) the added comfort is wonderful. For a "B-quality" quilt, the flaws are almost invisible to anyone that isn't going out of their way to analyze every stitch. Functionally, as well as Visually, this is an impressive underquilt offering a "warm hug" every single night. I can't wait until it's cold enough outside to give this a proper challenge.

  • Excellent and well thought out

    by William – 29th Jul 2017

Ordered a 10* short, Had it cut a little different then usual. Turned out fantastic. I'm a pretty big guy, 6'1" and 300 lbs so this quilt working out like it did was awesome.Laying diagonal i have a few inches at each end and am able to close up the ends against my hammock with no issues.

Took this quilt with me into the eagle cap wilderness, very versatile quilt. it worked well at 60* with the ends left open and kept me super super snug down to 40 with a 2 season quilt, had to throw the top quilt of each night. I wouldn't hesitate to run this with a 20* quilt well down into the teens.

    very very warm.

  • Top Notch Quality

    by JB – 20th Apr 2017

HG's products are truly as great as you will read in all the reviews.

  • Extremely pleased

    by Ray – 19th Apr 2017

I ordered the 10* to pair with a 20* TQ as I always feel colder on bottom and the top can always be supplemented with clothing, etc..

I received this and immediately installed it on 3 different GE hammocks and am extremely pleased with the fit, quality and construction.

I haven't been able to evaluate the performance yet as it hasn't been cold enough but I have no doubts that 5+ inches of down will do the job.

also want to say I had a couple questions concerning this quilt and they were always answered very quickly and to my satisfaction. can't ask for better than that.

    good work HG!
