Incubator Econ 40

Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Incubator Econ 40˚

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Incubator Econ 40° is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  With 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to 40°. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Incubator Econ comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium goose down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Incubator Econ comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, storage sack, and a stuff sack.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 4.5 liters, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)
Adjusting a HammockGear Incubator Full Length Underquilt (09:53)
Hammockgear....http://www.hammockgear.com Incubator Underquilt....http://www.hammockgear.com/incubator-20/ I have been wanting to do a video on how to adjust and fit a full length Hammockgear Incubator underquilt. So, I finally got a custom one made so now I can show. It pains me when folks struggle to get the proper fit on a UQ. Hammock camping has a lot of moving pieces and insulation underneath is where most folks fail. My opinion is that UQs are the most difficult part of a hammock system for most people. Hope this gives some helpful insight. Whoooooo Buddy)))) Shug

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant grey duck down on the market in all of our Econ quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Great value - Incubator Econ 40 (short)

    by Kendall – 10th Jul 2018

Unlike most other companies, HG rates their gear based on comfort, not survivability. As advertised, it keeps my butt warm down to 40° and I know it could probably go even lower. I'm 6 ft tall and the short version was plenty of coverage (with a top quilt as well). It packs down to soccer ball size and could get even smaller with a propper compression sack and it weighs under 19 ounces with the stiff sack. At just over $100 I couldn't be more satisfied.
My customer service experience was also great. They marked my order for faster delivery when I emailed them to say I needed it by a certain date and it showed up a week early.

  • Fantastic value!

    by Harry – 29th May 2018

I purchased this quilt for 3 season use and could not be more pleased. Superb workmanship and quality materials. It may be an Econ model in price but certainly gives up nothing in performance. Just a fantastic value in an underquilt.

  • Perfect Above Freezing Underquilt

    by Atrain – 16th May 2018

This is my first Hammock Gear purchase and I will be back for more. I used to carry a Zlite pad to keep my back warm, but it constantly moved around and it is pretty narrow. I finally took my 40 degree underquilt out for it's first use. It was near 70 degrees when I went to sleep but it dipped down to the low 50's overnight. I slept in shorts and a t-shirt and didn't get a single chill. The underquilt is super lightweight and packs down to the size of a large grapefruit in a compression bag. I won't be using my Zlite any longer and I probably will buy a top quilt instead of using my sleeping bag.

  • This is THE HEATER

    by Louis – 11th May 2018

Yo could not be happier with the purchase, cant seem to beat the price either. I use this for anything under 70 in the breezy nights in Florida even throughout the summer if needed, easily adjustable to however snug or loose you want it. I use this with my Warbonnet XLC, being 6'2 175 the standard still fits just fine. The ion fabric is great as well just little heavier than premium quilts. Odered this quilt march 12th shipped April 23 so expect a bit of a wait, nothing I didnt expect just a little salty the HG sticker wasn't in the box even though it was on the order.. Anyways set up and placement was beyond easy, considering they include two different color S clips for foot and head side, grab one fool!

  • econ price, not econ quality! so gooood!

    by Jammin – 18th Apr 2018

If you are on the fence about it, jump on the side where the grass is greener. This thing is awesome. Havent used it up camping yet but from my test runs it's super warm! Amazing quality! Not a stitch out of place. Thank you HG I can't wait to get years of warmth for my butt from this :)

  • gorgeous Moroccan blue econ 40 underquilt!

    by Barbara – 27th Feb 2018

The quality of products made by Hammock Gear is second to none. Just beautiful material. Easy to
put on hammock. I cannot believe the warmth it generates. I can use this on all my hammocks. My Lite Owl, treerunner and I presently even have it on a Hennessy Asym hammock. It works fine. So light but yet amply filled with down. HG is the first cottage vendor I have used that always gets the placement of their beautiful logo right. For some reason, that is something I appreciate

  • Perfect (40* - Long)

    by Alex – 27th Feb 2018

This is perfect. It keeps me cozy. Easy to adjust and hang. I have a 12' x 72" hammock and it fits perfect. I am 6'-3" tall and it still has 3" on either end with complete shoulder coverage. the taps along the side are perfect for adding things on such as my ridgeline tensioner. due to the length and width of my hammock the quilt likes to hide from me when I settle in. the tensioner attaches to the head end on one side, slings over the ridgeline, and connects to the foot end on the opposite side. This way the quilt centers itself under me with very little adjustment needed.

  • WOW!

by Rude Dogg Outdoors – 14th Feb 2018

So this is my first ECO setup, & honestly, I don't understand why this is a hundred bucks lower than the standard quilts. Quality is SUPERB! I opted on the ECO set for my 40 degree set because I sleep warm. I have a burrow & incubator 20 degree standard set in camo with stiched footbox & a little overstuff in the incubator. I felt I could get away with lower quality of the ECO set for warmer weather. No lower quality is evident. It's just awesome. If your on the fence for your first set of quilts whether to get ECO's or Standard, don't be afraid of the ECONOMY version. They are top notch

  • Amazing Product

    by Shane – 25th Oct 2017

I recently used this along side my Burrow Econ 40 on a two night backpacking trip in Pennsylvania's Tiadaghton State Forest. Night time temperatures hit the mid 30s and I was surprised at how warm I felt. There was one night where I had to push off the top quilt briefly to cool down.

This quilt is incredibly easy to setup and and tear down. It stayed in position throughout the night and did everything I'd hoped it would.

  • Perfect As ALL HG Equipment Is!

    by Swank – 26th Sep 2017

Love this quilt! It's the second one I've ordered from GF and it won't be the last by any means lol. The lead time was 4 weeks but my quilt arrived within 15 days and the quality is Amazing! Thanks HG!!!

  • Great top quilt so far

    by Mike – 27th Aug 2017

I used the top quilt in a tent a few times before I finally got a chance to hammock camp with it and I was really impressed. In the tent I slept warm but I would have to make sure it was fully tucked around my sides throughout the night or I would be cold. Sleeping with it in the hammock was a totally different experience and I could tell what it was designed for. Slept like a baby

  • Fantastic Quilt!

    by Jeff Gandee – 8th Aug 2017

I was impressed with this UQ from the moment I pulled it out of its storage sack. Very light, very easy to adjust, and it lofted quickly. There is nothing ECON-omy about this other than the price. I see quality and attention to detail in every part of this quilt. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

  • Super under quilts

    by Tim Holtzclaw – 24th Jul 2017

Great products by HG. This is the second under quilt I have purchased. The 1st was the Incubator 20 and now the Incubator Econ 40. Both incubators are made extremely well. No complaints. The under quilts keep you warm and very comfortable. Much needed for a good night sleep. I highly recommend both under quilts.

  • Unbelievable quality for the price.

    by Russ – 11th May 2017

I was looking for a cost effective UQ for a second setup I'm putting together. Found this gem and am really glad I did. Quality is top notch and this thing is WARM. and LIGHT.

Can't say enough good things about the ECON 40. Get one!

  • Excellent In Every Way

    by Unshavenman – 19th Apr 2017

I already own a 20 degree incubator but wanted something lighter for warm weather hanging. The Incubator Econ 40 meets my needs perfectly. The build quality is of course excellent, and the price point cannot be beat. I honestly don't know how you folks can put out such an excellent product at this price! Thanks!

  • Great buy

    by Greg – 15th Apr 2017

I have other cold weather HG quilts and was looking to buy a warm weather setup to replace my zlite pad. When the econ quilts came out I took the plunge quickly. I waited to do the review until after I used it. My initial visual impressions were that it is on par with my other HG quilts for build quality. It feels almost the same and the material looks slightly different but not in a bad way. The first night the temperature started out in the 50's and everything was great. The forecasted low was 37, but it ended up getting down to 32, I use a remote Garmin sensor to get the actual temperature. I ended up getting a little chill but put on my jacket and was fine. The quilt stayed in position and nothing loosened up overnight. I am a cold sleeper so am am really happy with the results. Hopefully this will help you make your decision if you're on the fence about an econ or just new to hammock camping.

  • Are You Kidding Me?

    by Kip Bissell – 31st Mar 2017

I was in the market for a mild weather UQ and bought the 40 degree Econ Incubator as soon as they launched. Received mine today and am blown away at the quality of the build and materials! This UQ isn't some cheap version! It's filled generously with down and is super light! I have no doubt that I can do 40 and below. Amazing product!
