Phoenix 20

Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Goose down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Phoenix 20˚

The Phoenix is the 'little brother' of the Incubator, approximately 3/4 length. It's ideal for people who are pack size and weight conscious and want to shave those few extra ounces without sacrificing much in warmth or comfort. The Phoenix helps you maximize every ounce by using goose down and with 9 differential baffles that run the length of the quilt, which helps keep the down from shifting, providing more warmth. The baffles make this much warmer than similar quilts using "sewn-through" construction, allowing more loft. With premium water resistant, 850 fill goose down, the 20°F Phoenix is rated conservatively.

The Phoenix has a three dimensional, ergonomically shaped cut, which not only reduces weight, but provides a more secure wrap around the hammock, eliminating drafts. This underquilt (or UQ) is 3/4-length. This means it is designed to insulate you from your shoulders down to below your knees. Many hammock campers will use a small piece of closed-cell-foam pad under their lower legs and feet since they typically require less insulation underneath to stay warm. The Phoenix comes complete with a stuff sack and everything needed to suspend the UQ from your favorite hammock.

Goose Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 5.5 liters, but due to the nature of goose down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of goose down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)
Phoenix 20˚Standard

We utilize the finest 850 fill power, water-resistant goose down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

All Hammock Gear quilts are made of ARGON fabric. All ARGON fabric is specifically designed ripstop nylon which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. We offer both 10 and 15 denier weights with certain colors only available in one or the other. ARGON 67 (10d) weighs 0.67oz/square yard while ARGON 90 (15d) weighs 0.90 oz/square yard. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish. The DWR not only improves the water resistance of ARGON , it also enhances the fabric by improving overall strength, tightening the weave and thus increasing its down-proofness. Calendaring of the fabric further enhances the down-proofness of the quilt.

  • Black - Argon 67 (10 denier)
  • Black - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)
  • Charcoal Gray - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)

  • Coyote Brown - - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)
  • Woodland Camo - Argon 90 (15 denier +0.9 oz)

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Top notch quality

    by John E – 4th Jun 2018

As with all other Hammock gear products we own quality is top notch. Additionally their customer service is second to none. When we had issues with USPS the Hammock Gear crew was willing to bend over backwards to make it right even when it wasn’t their fault!
This Phoenix 20 will be my attempt to see if I can live with a 3/4 length quilt when it dips below freezing as a 6 footer. If not i will acquire an incubator and this one will go to my (much shorter) wife or daughter for whom it will be a full length.

  • a lot of thought went into this design

    by j-fish – 24th Mar 2018

One of my biggest concerns going from a bridge hammock to a gathered end was hearing that you had to constantly adjust the underquilt. Well hammock gear has eleminated that concern. I wasn’t aware when I ordered this that it actually has a secondary shock cord suspension on it. One runs the entire length of the quilt like every other underquilt out there allowing your quilt to slide up and down your hammock. Then there is a second one that only goes from each corner of the quilt up to the whipping of you hammock, and there is an adjustment buckle of sorts where it attaches at the corner to allow you to tighten or loosen this secondary suspension. It is a little hard to explain, but basically it keeps your hammock in place and won’t let your quilt slide up or down your hammock while you sleep. Another feature I love is an added baffle at the ends of the quilt giving you a little flap of down that makes a seal agaianst your hammock, really smart. Each end also has a cinch to ensure your quilt stays up against your hammock. Also it goes without saying that this quilt is incredibly warm. I have zero complaints about it, the only thing I changed was removing the S-biners that attached the shock cord suspension to the hammock continuous loops. Nothing wrong with them, in fact they only weighed about .21 oz together which surprised me. I just didn’t care for them, personal preference. So I tied loops into the shock cord so it just slips over the whipping now. I really love this underquilt, Hammock Gear has again made me very happy!

  • Hammock gear makes the best quilts.

    by TM – 17th Nov 2017

I think HG makes the best quilts. I bought this in goose down for thru hikes but I have the econ version for hanging at home and around town. You can't beat their quilts or their price especially in the econ series. The secondary suspension system it holds tight to your body. I liked it so much I retro fitted my DIY climashield 3/4 quilt with a secondary suspension.

  • HG to the rescue

    by Wendy – 9th Oct 2017

Pad in the hammock works fine , unless you have a dog . After my daughter got a service dog we went on few hikes and didn't have much fun as she woke up cold off the pad. Hammock Gear was most helpful in selecting the right underquilt (thank you Harry) . Last week we went for 3 days 2 nights trip in the Zaleski state forest and it was awesome , with the underquilt they both were sound asleep all night. Now we can go hiking more often . Great customer service and craftsmanship, thank you Hammock Gear!

  • Made The Switch

    by Raúl – 10th Jul 2017

I've been using an hammock with a sleeping pad for years. I finally broke down and bought an underquilt and I'm glad I did. It's so much more comfortable to just get in the hammock and not deal with the pad. Using a sleeping pad is okay, but an underquilt is great.
The Phoenix 20 has kept me warm from cool summer nights to damp and cold Oregon spring nights. I look forward to using it for backpacking this fall. I don't see any problems with this underquilt at all, so it gets five stars from me.

  • Great ThruHiking UQ

    by Beardoh! – 1st May 2017

I have used a couple different underquilts in my travels, Last summer, I used the Phoenix 20 and was very happy with it. At the end of a long day, it is great to hop into my hammock with an underquilt that I set the shockcord once (at the beginning of the hike), and didn't adjust again for the whole summer. No dialing it in each evening, etc...

I have used the quilt in the 60 degree temp range down into the low 20s/high teen and it has performed well.

I liked it enough, I bought one for my wife as well!

  • Lovin' My UnderQuilt

    by Raúl – 27th Mar 2017

I just tried my Phoenix 20 UnderQult out for the first time this weekend on a cold sleety night on the McKenzie River in Oregon. It's my first experience using an underquilt. I've been using a sleeping pad in my hammock for years and years, but now I'm never going back. So nice. I slept like a log, totally warm, and never worried about my pad sliding around underneath me. I love my underquilt.

  • Excellent craftsmanship and customer service.

    by Rafael L. – 6th Feb 2017

I purchased my 20deg Phoenix UQ with a special request of matching a fabric color that they did not carry. They were extremely helpful in guiding me through the process, then in 2 short weeks I received my beautiful UQ. The stitching and everything was top notch. Already planning on adding a TQ to my set up and you know its going to be from Hammock Gear.

  • Great UQ great service

    by Rafael – 28th Jan 2017

Just wanted to share my experience with you all. I asked about a custom fabric option and Harry was so helpful in letting me know how to go about it. Got it in under 2 weeks. Talk about great work coupled with great customer service. You have gained me as a customer for life!

  • Ready for a 4th Purchae

    by Beas – 29th Dec 2016

Purchased the 20* Phoenix for my 14 year old son for Christmas. 1 time through on the demo and he has it down pat. Easy set up and take down is great so I don't have to set up both his and mine. This is the 3rd purchase from HG. as always the quality is outstanding. jr has already slept in it three times

  • first underquilt

by Don Kelly donsadventures. on you tube. – 19th Aug 2016

I have watched shugemery videos trying to learn to lighten my load and improve my hammock experience and wow! This made the world of difference. Slept in my back yard for trial and I am impressed!

  • Phoenix 20...underwhelmed

    by Adam – 21st Jul 2016

I finally received my Phoenix 20 and have never been more excited for a piece of camping gear. That weekend I camped in high elevations with temps in the low 50's. I COULDN'T STAY WARM! I remained chilly all night despite my best efforts to try and adjust the UQ. I know this very well could be user error, but reading I could find in relation to this UQ I felt confident about the adjustment points, what to look for, and how to troubleshoot problems. I haven't given up, but as is obvious from all the other fantastic reviews, I'm confused as to why I couldn't achieve the "cozy", "warmth", "warm and toasty" so many others have experience in much colder temps. We'll see!

    Response from Hammock Gear:
Good morning Adam. We're sorry for your experience and hope we can rectify the situation for you. Please contact us at sales@hammockgear.com or 740-445-4327. We'd be happy to take a look at the quilt for you to make sure it is built correctly.

  • Pheonix 20 with 2oz of overfill

by Martin (weekender BCUK) (Bigmanwalking) – 10th Jun 2016

I begin by saying at this time I've not tried it out yet, however looking at the quality of the stitching and all the loops and toggles and edging, no small detail has been overlooked.
The attention to detail is superb and that's just the stuff sack !! I'm kidding....although it to is very well finished.
The quality is second to none.
    Fantastic thanks again

  • Just perfect!

    by Elvis – 23rd Apr 2016

Got the Phoenix 20 as a 3-season UQ for my Blackbird XLC and it is awesome! I'm in it as I write this and temp is right below the freezing point but I am toasty. I never get cold on my legs so the shorter length of the quilt and the less bulk is ideal for me. I will definitely get another one with a lower rating for winter hanging!

  • Incredible quality and performance

    by Darren – 22nd Apr 2016

Finally got to give my HG quits a good run and they performed amazing! First off, the craftsmanship is second to none. Beautiful stitch work and materials... what else would you expect from made in the USA! Second, I didn't get to test the full temperature rating, but it did get in the low 40's/high 30's and I never once felt cold or uncomfortable. It would have a been a very cold night without them as I pulled my under quilt to the side to see what a difference it would make. Lastly, I'm 6'2" & 200 lbs... I ordered the Phoenix under quilt and Borrow standard length and width top quilt... the overlap between the 3/4 length bottom quilt and the top quilt with the buttons snapped was perfect. I'm so excited and happy with this purchase, I just order a full set for the wife.

  • Phoenix 20 - Best Quilt

    by Kvothe – 3rd Mar 2016

I have had my Custom Phoenix 20 for over half a year now and so could test it out in all environments.

The craftsmenship is excellent. It is great to buy a piece of gear and find out that someone really thought it all through. Primary and secondary suspension keep the quilt perfectly fitted throughout the night. No fiddling is required. The ends can be cinched tight or losened for extra ventialtion. And the quilt is warm. I am a warm sleeper and was nice and cozy at 20 degrees.

I would recommend this quilt and I will add a top quilt to my collection sooner or later :)

  • Fantastic Craftsmanship

    by Steve – 23rd Feb 2016

The Phoenix 20 is a quality underquilt with plenty of insulation and great suspension. Kept me nice and warm, even though I had to peel my frozen straps off the trees in the morning.

  • I love it!

    by Tyler Chapman – 22nd Feb 2016

I'm new to hammock camping and using under quilts and this was my first under quilt purchase after wrestling around with pads for about a year. It took me a while to figure out how to best suspend this thing with my hammock, but that's half the fun and I think most of us really like to fiddle with gear in the back yard before testing it out in the field. I really enjoy using my down jacket to create a foot box to make up for the 3/4 length. Honestly, my feet are fine with this quilt down to 45 degrees without having to use my down jacket over the foot end of the hammock. I highly recommend! Now I need to get some top quilts instead of using old poly sleeping bags.

  • Awesome stuff!

    by Ian – 16th Feb 2016

Amazing UQ, Make all your tent-camping friends jealous!!!

  • UL and peaceful sleep

    by Hiker Mike – 20th Jan 2016

Paired with the Burrow 20 for my first night out slept in 27 degrees. So much better sleep than trying to old sleeping pad in a hammock. Had them customize for me and add some length in lieu of some width to fit my 6'4" thin frame and my sub7 eno hammock. I got more REM sleep that night than I normally do in two nights at home according to my watch. The HG products with the rest of my sleep system have my base pack weight under 11lb for winter backpacking.

  • Why did I wait so long to buy this?!?

    by Joel – 31st Dec 2015

Having moved over to hammock camping this previous season, I knew an Underquilt was in my future. I hang with a group of friends that have a lot of different gear so I was able to see a lot of different products from multiple vendors. The price was a bit above my casual camping budget, but after doing my own research I decided to spend the cash and get a Hammock Gear Phoenix 20 with 1oz of overstuff. It came FAST and I could immediately see the QUALITY in the workmanship. Not a stitch out of place and the down's loft is much better than any of my other down gear. My first night out took the mercury down to 32 degrees and I could not get over how warm I was. Even with some steady wind and spitting rain on my tarp, I felt like there was an electric blanket in my hammock and had to vent a little. If you are on the fence about spending the cash on a quilt, don't hesitate on this one! Miles better than the ENO's I checked out and customer service is INCREDIBLE. Looking forward to colder weather so I can test the Phoenix's limits, but I definitely have full confidence in the rating. Currently saving up for a Burrow 20.

  • Toasty warm on the Appalachian Trail

    by James – 1st Dec 2015

I recently started hammock hiking and needed an under quilt for a multi-hike on the AT. Ordered the Pheonix 20 and it performed beautifully. It easily attached to my Speer Hammock. The adjustments snugged it up well. I was warm every night with varying wind speeds and rain. I'd recommend this UQ to anyone.

  • it works!

    by patfiveshot – 29th Nov 2015

It's like laying upon a sunlit beach on the warm sand, swinging in the breeze with little butterflies dancing upon your toes and lulling you to sleep to the soft sounds of tropical breezes....but in winter.

  • phoenix 20

    by eddie graberitz – 27th Oct 2015

Got the underquilt just in time for a trip, it worked beautiful. I was very warm in it paired with the burrow 20. Thanks Adam for the speedy service. I greatly apricate it!

  • My first and last underquilt.

    by Daniel – 11th Aug 2015

Just purchased the Phoenix 20 with 1oz extra down. Took it out this weekend and was thoroughly impressed. Temps got down to 45 and I was too hot and just layed without bag on top. Great workmanship and shipping was fast. Thank you so much for such a great product, looking forward to trying it out in the late fall with the Sierra Nevada mountain coolness. Will shop again.

  • quality quilt

    by Jeff – 30th Apr 2015

I ordered a Phoenix under quilt and I was very pleased with how quickly it was shipped and I received it. The quality of the quilt is obvious and the way it adjust is very simple and easy to do. I ordered the 20 degree quilt. It is warm but I haven't got a chance to try it at low temperatures because it hasn't been cold enough here but I think it will easily be warm to the temperature it's rated for. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another quilt from hammock gear.

  • Unbelieveable

    by Chirpa – 19th Apr 2015

Unbelievably warn for a 3/4 and is a great fit for my 6'3 frame. Nice and light with very little bulk means it fits in my pack well. I will be ordering another soon for my girlfriend (who bought this one as a gift) as well as a pair of top quilts for the two of us. Couldn't be happier and Adam is great to work with.

  • Very Pleased!

    by Shabazz – 24th Feb 2015

I recently ordered a Phoencubator 20, which is a little longer than the Phoenix but shorter than the Incubator. The craftsmanship is professional. I've only been able to use it down to 23 degree weather and was toasty all night! This under quilt is amazing and of top quality!

  • A+

    by Adam – 22nd Nov 2014

Awsome quality. Thanks for the speedy delivery! Took it down to 20s and was toasty with it and the burrow 20 this week!

  • Warm, light, and wonderful

    by Josh – 18th Nov 2014

I took it out last weekend down to the upper 20's with a 0 degree bag and a windshield shade for a footpad. Toes a little cold, but otherwise slept great. Adam worked with me to get it here by my trip even though I ordered a little later than I should have. Packs small and light, but is a little tough to arrange with the womb entry Hennessey.

  • new fan

    by mountainhanger – 31st Oct 2014

I ordered this phoenix 20 after writing hammock gear and asking if it can be delivered in two weeks for a trip. Next say I recieved email saying yes, and I had it wi th in a week. Very professional and quick, no custom to it but the stock options. I am looking to go lighter as I get older but have had problems with 3/4 underquilt before but decided to try this in comparison to a synthetic underquilt. I absolutely love this quilt, the warmth was immediate and adjustment was really the easiest yet, perhaps due to its shape. For the weight this can't be beat, and the craftsmanship is top notch. Thanks Adam and Jenny and all at Hammock Gear

  • Great design, warmth and comfort

    by Jeff (Bobwhite) – 28th Oct 2014

I bought this UQ from Adam and Jenny at Trail Days in Damascus, VA. I was immediately amazed at the warmth it generated when I sat in my hammock. This was my first down quilt, and it almost felt like I was sitting on an electric blanket within 30 seconds. This quilt has completely changed how I sleep in my hammock. There is no comparison to the comfort level from when I used a pad to the UQ. I have since bought a Burrow TQ from them and am in heaven when i get in my hammock.

I initially had some problems with the suspension, because the Lin-Locs didn't lock. Then I realized they were installed backwards. It was easy to re-thread them properly and now they work great. It is a well designed suspension that allows a lot of adjustment.

  • excellent product

    by Ryan Rose ( Lazyhanger) – 14th Oct 2014

I used this particular UQ in a 40 degree downpour and it kept me warm and cozy all night. The quality of materials and workmanship is second to none. Highly recommend it.

  • I won my Phoenix 20 at the PA MAHHA 2014

by The Wood Guy (MrWoodGear) HammockForums – 14th Oct 2014

Amazing!! The quality of this UQ is top notch! I have only used it a couple of times and WOW I have never been so comfortable and warm in my Hennessy Hammock. That being said this review is about the generosity of HammockGear. The donations made by Adam at MAHHA 2014 made the raffle!! Not only did he donate a ton of gear, he was there too to answer any questions or just talk. Thanks HammockGear for the generosity and the quality of your products! I'm definitely making a purchase soon! I still can't believe I won something and it's something I've really wanted.

  • Centerpiece to my hammock system

    by Chris P – 7th Oct 2014

As awesome as this quilt is (and it is awesome...you can read all of the other reviews about that), I wanted to leave a review of the service Adam and Jenny provided me. I recently discovered a small hold in my Phoenix from one of my trips. Dismayed at my carelessness, I emailed Jenny and asked what they could do. Lickity-split, they offered to patch it free of charge and for me to ship it out to them. If that wasn't enough, my quilt arrived back at my house not 5 or so days after I sent it. Now i have a barely visible little patch in my quilt and I couldn't be happier.

They didn't have to help me and they did. What else do you want to know? This might be the first thing I've ever reviewed online. I can't wait until I have an excuse to review something else on this site. Bravo, guys.

  • Awesome piece of gear

    by PJ Davies – 18th Sep 2014

Got this on a last minute decision for a trip up to Northern Michigan. Lows were in the low 40's at night and I wanted to make sure I was prepared sleeping in a hammock. All of the other gents that came with me brought tents and wanted to poke fun at the guy in the hammock. Come the next morning, I was happy to report that I was warm as could be with the help of this UQ while they were complaining about being cold and moist. Great piece of equipment and certainly made all the difference. Thanks!

  • Easy to set up and warm

    by matthew – 24th Aug 2014

After reading about every UQ for many months and watching every video I could find I finally settled on a 20° Phoenix with an extra ounce of down with a black Argon 90 exterior and grey Argon 67 interior. It's a very handsome combination, the grey has almost a little bit of brown in it.

After seeing all of the products and hacks people use to get their UQ to hang properly I was expecting this to be hard. I turned out to be so easy. I basically clipped it onto the suspension of my zip Hennessy and tightened the ends a little and it fits like it was made for it. I can't believe how easy it was... I'm super happy with this purchase.

Sorry I'm not really good with words.

  • Wasn't sure what to order but...

    by RobFishMan – 25th Jun 2014

I initially wasn't sure if I should order a 20 degree product for multi-season use, particularly for summer, but after talking to Adam he assured me that the Phoenix 20 would be fine in all conditions and boy was he right! I've used this quilt 3 times already this summer in temps ranging from 40 - 60 and haven't been uncomfortable in the slightest. It fits my hammock perfectly, absolutely NO CBS, and no over-heating either. I couldn't be happier with this product, the workmanship, or the customer service. Can't wait to save up enough for a top quilt to complete my set up! Thanks HammockGear!

  • Best UQ I've Owned

by David "Jolly" Hannan – 23rd Jun 2014

I've owned some UQs over the years, and this one from Hammock Gear is my favorite for the following reasons:

    * temp rating is spot on and, in fact, a tad on the warmer side than most
    * easy to set up and comes with all biners ready for hanging
    * perfect workmanship
    * ships MIGHTY fast
    * customer service is top notch
    * the finest quality down is used here; my UQ lofts in no time and packs down very well
    * the fit is perfect - I love the slightly tapered foot end - less weight!

I own JRB, Wilderness Logics, and Warbonnet UQs: I will never buy another UQ from anywhere else other than Hammock Gear.

I also bought a full length 0'F UQ earlier in the year and it's of the same elite quality.

  • Excellent Improvement

    by David Thompson – 12th May 2014

I am now a solid HG convert and my basement is quickly filling up with their 850 goose down! So it is no surprise that I find my brand new 20 Phoenix to be outstanding workmanship! I had a JRB full length for a few years, and have taken it from everything from -5 through 75. It did fine, but it was heavy and didnt curve up around my shoulders well. I found on many nights that were not that cold, I was waking up and my buddies who were sporting the HG UQs were not. I surmised from looking at them that it was because HG seems to really get up around you and hug you in from all angles. And the addition of the tiny d-rings are an AWESOME feature that allow you to really snug yourself in. between that and the 3/4 length (which still covers everything but my lower calves) allowing for significant weight and pack size reduction, this thing is just awesome!! Can't wait to test how far I can push its temp ratings. Great job as always HG!

  • Oh man!

    by Chris L – 5th May 2014

This is the first underquilt that I have owned and I'm more than impressed. As a new hammock camper I was glad to see that the Phoenix was extremely easy to set up the first time. Right out of the box the thing was ready to go...no messing around with adjusting cords or biners. Simply hung it on my hammock, tightened up the head and foot end and laid down into a cocoon of downey goodness. Quality and craftsmanship were awesome and shipping was relatively fast for a cottage manufacturer. Loved it sooo much that I ordered a Phoenix 40

  • Very warm

    by Christi – 26th Mar 2014

I was a little hesitant about how warm the Phoenix would be since I tend to be cooler than normal. (Typically female) I brought a matress pad just in case. After some adjustement, I got the quilt wrapped the hammock, eliminating any empty spaces and slept nice and toasty in my down sleeping bag, base layers and the Phoenix wrapped around me. I didn't want to get up the next morning because there was a layer of frost and I was so warm inside of my hammock.

  • Wife Loves it

    by Greg Wheat gunner76 – 10th Mar 2014

Got this for the wife to use. As short as she is its a full length UQ for her. The only problem is when we hang together she is using the Phonenix and I have to make do with something else.. Maybe she will get me one for my b'day

  • Great Quality

    by Stef – 6th Mar 2014

I haven't had a chance to use this yet as I haven't departed for my hike, but upon receiving it in the mail, I inspected it and found it to be of really high quality. No cheap stitching. Very light and compact and felt warm and durable.

  • work of art

    by fishwater – 30th Jan 2014

I am impressed by the workmanship that created this quilt. The argon materials are very soft. The stiching is perfect. I had to lengthen the suspension slightly for it to fit on my 11' hammock. Otherwise, it would good to go from the start.

I have used this quilt into the teens and felt warm. I went with a 1 ounce overstuff and even still my scale says it weighs 16 oz. I am 6' tall and the quilt extends from my shoulders to mid calf. I use a 20'' by 20'' closed cell foam pad for my feet. I chose the green color with black inner. The green has a nice deep color that carries a nice shimmer. The quilt is also a nice width that allows you to raise a knee in the figure 4 position and still have it covered by the quilt.

Overall , I would highly recommend this quilt.

  • 20 degree Phoenix UQ

    by Travis Shirley – 12th Dec 2013

I have purchased two 20 degree Phoenix UQ from Hammock Gear. The workmanship and the quality of the UQ are exceptional. My son uses his on a WBBB and I use mine on a WBBB XLC. They perform great and I couldn't be happier. I have used mine in the spring, summer and fall. It has performed as expected. I also own a 20 degree Burrow. Adam was great with all the questions I had about the taper and width of it. It fits splendidly! The customer service is the best!! You cannot go wrong ordering any of Hammock Gear's products.

  • Amazing!

    by George – 5th Dec 2013

After a huge amount of research, I finally decided to go with the HammockGear Phoenix underquilt and I couldn't be happier! It functions flawlessly, and is the best quality piece of gear that I now own. In addition to the quilt being perfect, I ordered it late on a Tuesday night and received it on that Friday! Thank you guys so much!!!

  • Let the test begin

    by Chris " lil Mann" – 6th Nov 2013

Adam custom made me a Phincubator 20 degree under quilt which upon arrival was lighter than i expected and the right length for a 5,6 guy, a plus. The weather hasnt got down too low in VA yet but at 40 i can chill and nap comfortable. I toss and turn also and it seems to hold up. More test to come :) thanks

  • Warm under quilt!

    by Unknown – 26th Jul 2013

I have only used it once and it was only in 58 as the low but boy I was warm, I only used a small shoulder sheet that I made and later during the night a light fleece blanket. It was pretty easy to figure out how to adjust. I will do another review when I have used it in the cold more.

  • Awesome!!

    by Unknown – 12th Jul 2013

Great craftsmanship! Suspension options are great. Overall solid product. Can't wait to buy another.

  • A Fond Farewell to Pads...

    by Eric Rose ( ToHa on HF ) – 16th Jun 2013

AMAZING! I am most impressed with this under quilt. I asked my fiancee for this UQ for Father's Day. I received it within 45 minutes of leaving for a car camping trip with my step-daughter. I couldn't be more pleased. The quality of fabric and stitching is second to none. It was a reasonably mild night in Virginia, but this UQ kept me warm and actually made me want to stay in my hammock all morning. Thank you everyone at Hammock Gear for making this a most memorable Fathers Day!

  • Great product/ customer service lacking

by Jimmytheshirt on Hammock Forums – 18th Apr 2013

The uq is awesome. Great workmanship and just as I ordered. The suspension system is robust without being heavy. Well done. The main complaint was that I asked for it to be shipped to my work so my wife wouldn't see it as it was a gift for her. Hammockgear sent it to my house even though it was clearly NOT the shipping address. Guess who was home when it was delivered. That's right, my wife. Surprise ruined!

Anyway, I brought it to the attention of hammock gear and got an email saying they were confused because the shipping and billing addresses are near each other on the invoice. They also apologized. Great. That's helpful. I am likely to avoid hammock gear in the future due to what I consider to be customer service shortcomings, not product quality issues. I expected a little bit more from a company in the Buckeye state. Thats my opinion. YMMV.

  • 20* Phoenix on a Hennessy

by Tim (Chappy23 on Hammock Forums) – 21st Mar 2013

I recieved my 20* Phoenix UQ for Christmas. I have a Hennessy Ultralight Hammock and was looking for a UQ to use with it. After researching many UQ I chose this one. I could not be more pleased. The craftsmanship is an A+++. The weights came just as listed. I have slept out 3 times so far and it has work excellent. I been down to the mid 30's with not cold spots air gaps or any other issues. If someone was looking for a UQ to work on there Hennessy this is the one. I am 5" 10" weight 170 and it fits me prefect. This is my first UQ and I cannot say enought good things about it.. If all the rest of the products here are this well made and work this well. I will be buying more in the future. Thanks Adam for such a great product.

  • Perfect.

    by Tyler – 18th Mar 2013

The quilt is amazing. Ease of setup, craftsmanship, and materials all stellar.

No way to adequately convey quality here.

  • I'd give it 6 stars if I could

    by Jerry Schleining – 2nd Feb 2013

The materials are beautiful, the craftsmanship is second to none and the comfort is beyond belief. I love my Pheonix under quilt.
I could not believe the absolute comfort and warmth the first night I spent in it. Super easy to get on my Blackbird and immediate warmth.
I spend a lot of time on the PCT here in Oregon, the weight savings in my pack, the warmth at night, and the comfort that comes with having this underquilt attached to my hammock is superb.
    I highly recommend this.
Oh and the customer service.. simply the best!!
    6 Stars

  • warm, comfortable, well-made

    by Steven Jarvis – 30th Dec 2012

I've ordered two Phoenix 20 degree 3/4 underquilts this year, one for me and one for my son. Both are impeccably made with excellent construction, materials, and stitching. The multiple suspension points allow us to dial in the perfect fit. The draft collar is great at helping seal the quilt to the bottom of our hammocks. Keeps us nice and warm down into the 20s (we've yet to get down 20 degrees while hanging).

I'd recommend a Hammock Gear Phoenix underquilt without hesitation.

  • Excellent Product

by Mike "Black Foot" Bevil – 30th Nov 2012

Got our new 20* Phoenix underquilts just in time for a post Thanksgiving hang with my son. The temprature dropped to 28* that first night but we were warm and toasty. This is a well-crafted piece of outdoor gear that is a joy to own. Highly recommended.

  • Top Quality

    by Byron Looms – 26th Nov 2012

Quilt is extremely nice and quite cozy. Plenty warm and I feel like temps are accurate. Pleasure to deal with Adam.

  • Excellent, Excellent, Excellent

    by Brian (bl223 on Hammockforums) – 23rd Nov 2012

I have been trying out my 20deg Pheonix (with one ounce overfill) here and there. The other night I was sleeping out and checked the temp and it was 24 out. I had on shorts, a short-sleeved T-shirt and wool socks. That's it and I was warm and slept great. I am so pleased with I can't even describe it. I am hoping and prayin for some extra cash to buy a top quilt. Thanks very much.

  • My go to UQ

    by MrGreen – 23rd Nov 2012

I have slept in my Phoenix all over this country and all I can say is down heaven. From 17deg on top of Mica Mt to 60+ deg nights in the Linville Gorge. From frozen nights on the Superior Hiking Trail to the warm nights of the New Mexico desert. From the curve ball weather of the Wonderland Trail to the soup of a spring night in Demascus, VA this is my UQ of choice. Do yourself a favor and add this piece to your hanging system. You will not be sorry !
