Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Lead time at the moment is approximately 6-7 weeks, from your purchase date, to ship out new made to order quilts

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Phoenix Econ 0˚

With premium water resistant, 800 fill duck down, the 0°F Phoenix Econ is rated conservatively. The Phoenix Econ is the 'little brother' of the Incubator Econ, approximately 3/4 length. It's ideal for people who are pack size and weight conscious and want to shave those few extra ounces without sacrificing much in warmth or comfort. The Phoenix Econ helps you maximize every ounce by using goose down and with 9 differential baffles that run the length of the quilt, which helps keep the down from shifting, providing more warmth. (The baffles make this much warmer than similar quilts using "sewn-through" construction, allowing more loft).

The Phoenix Econ has a three dimensional, ergonomically shaped cut, which not only reduces weight, but provides a more secure wrap around the hammock, eliminating drafts. This underquilt (or UQ) is 3/4-length. This means it is designed to insulate you from your shoulders down to below your knees. Many hammoock campers will use a small piece of closed-cell-foam pad under their lower legs and feet since they typically require less insulation underneath to stay warm. The Phoenix Econ comes complete with a stuff sack, storage sack and everything needed to suspend the UQ from your favorite hammock.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 5.5 liters, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)

Down

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant Duck down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

Fabric

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

Baffles

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • My thoughts are pretty clear on this quilt...

    by wetfoot310 – 22nd Jan 2018

Money very well spent. As if this quilt is not a deal already, I ordered this on Black Friday on 2017. Needless to say, this just made it easier fore to justify purchases with the better half.

The night I got this, we we're experiencing a pretty wicked cold snap here in the Midwest. Obviously, I had to do some testing in the backyard. That night was down to 4° and paired with my other gear, it work phenomenally.

Now knowing I can place some trust in this quilt, time to field test. I have just got back from a two night trip with temp only touching low 20's with heavy winds. I had no problems.

The suspension is great. Once it's snugged up and draft seals pulled in, you are set for a comfortable night sleep.

The fabric is incredibly soft to the touch. I don't have a top quit with the ion, however I could see the benefits. It feels very durable. Does take a little long to get air out when packing down, but you need to slow down anyways.

In my opinion, duck down works just as well as goose down. Yes it's a little heavier. Yes it doesn't pack down as well as goose down. But there is no trade off for insulation quality.

I'm planning a thru hike of the Ozark Trail at the end of March, and in the market for a 20° underquilt. You better believe Hammock Gear makes it hard for you to want to buy a quilt from other vendors. Great quality materials. The craftsmanship is par to none. Great customer service. Delivered to your door in a incredibly reasonable amount of time for something that's handmade.

  • Great Quilt!

    by Katherine – 20th Jan 2018

This is my first quilt and I'm very happy I chose this one. It was a Christmas gift and I was told it arrived in plenty of time. Out of the box material and craftsmanship look great. I haven't had a chance to sleep out in it but did test it out for a few hours and it preformed wonderfully. I'm in Sault Ste Marie so when I hung it was dark, snowing, windy, and 6 degrees F. I tossed a 20-degree bag on top and was completely warm. I'm 5'6" and don't lay completely stretched out which makes this essentially a full-length quilt on me. The only drawback was the suspension cords were not long enough for my hammock, so I had to add some elastic cord to make it long enough which was a very easy fix. This is my fault for having an unusually long hammock (Skeeter Beeter Pro) and I’m sure the cords are long enough for every other hammock length. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this under quilt and would recommend it.

  • Quitl worke great!

    by Dan Thornton – 26th Aug 2017

This was my first under quilt, so I was nervous about how difficult it would be to fit my hammock, especially since I have a bottom entry Hennessey. Shug's video (youtube) was my guide. It was easy to fit to my hammock and to myself. Plus I found it easy to make final adjustments from within the hammock. The warmth is instant. Thank you for a good and economical product.

  • Fantastic product.

    by Unknown – 17th May 2017

I brought this quilt down to about 15 degrees F and it performed wonderfully. Took a little adjusting to get it really tight against me but once it was adjusted I was toasty warm! Quilt material was breathable but blocked the wind quite well. Couldnt be happier with a well made product that performs as it should.
