Phoenix Econ 20

Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 8/16/2018 have a lead time of approximately 4 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Phoenix Econ 20˚

With premium water resistant, 800 fill duck down, the 20°F Phoenix Econ is rated conservatively. The Phoenix Econ is the 'little brother' of the Incubator Econ, approximately 3/4 length. It's ideal for people who are pack size and weight conscious and want to shave those few extra ounces without sacrificing much in warmth or comfort. The Phoenix Econ helps you maximize every ounce by using goose down and with 9 differential baffles that run the length of the quilt, which helps keep the down from shifting, providing more warmth. (The baffles make this much warmer than similar quilts using "sewn-through" construction, allowing more loft).

The Phoenix Econ has a three dimensional, ergonomically shaped cut, which not only reduces weight, but provides a more secure wrap around the hammock, eliminating drafts. This underquilt (or UQ) is 3/4-length. This means it is designed to insulate you from your shoulders down to below your knees. Many hammoock campers will use a small piece of closed-cell-foam pad under their lower legs and feet since they typically require less insulation underneath to stay warm. The Phoenix Econ comes complete with a stuff sack, storage sack and everything needed to suspend the UQ from your favorite hammock.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. For more information visit: http://responsibledown.org/

Compression Size

The Stuff Sack we ship with this quilt is approximately 5.5 liters, but due to the nature of duck down, it can be compressed further with an aftermarket compression stuff sack.  We do not recommend keeping the quilt compressed for more than 24 hours.  The quilt should be stored in the cotton storage bag provided, when not in use.

Under Quilt Advantages

Chances are you are already aware of the advantages of down under quilts. To summarize:

  • thermal efficiency
  • weight savings
  • volume savings
  • ease of use & adjustment (especially compared to a pad)
Phoenix Econ 20˚Standard
Fill Weight8.8 oz
Total Weight19.15 oz

We utilize the finest 800 fill power, water-resistant Duck down on the market in all of our quilts. It is tested and certified by the International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

All Hammock Gear Econ quilts are made of Ion fabric. All Ion fabric is specifically designed nylon taffeta which is manufactured for Hammock Gear. This material is a 20 Denier nylon taffeta with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating, which makes it great fabric for lightweight quilts. Weight is 1.1 oz / yd²

All of our under quilts make use of baffle (also known as "box baffle") construction. This means that the seams between the down-filled chambers are not sewn through, but instead consist of a fabric wall about .75 to 3 inches tall, depending on the model.

Temperature Ratings

At Hammock Gear, we use temperature ratings which are very conservative. Compare them in the marketplace and you will agree. Here is a point we wish to emphasize: the first and most important step you must take when choosing an under quilt by temperature is to Know Thyself. Are you a Cold sleeper, a Warm sleeper, or maybe a Really Warm sleeper? Factor this into your selection process and you will be much better off. With under quilts, the more you experiment, the more you will dial this in.

  • Best Quality for the Price

    by Michael – 25th Mar 2018

The Phoenix Econ 20 is my first Underquilt. The quality is almost too good to believe for the money . I immediately took it out for an overnight trip in temps of the mid to low 40s and got the most comfortable hammock nights sleep I have ever had. I was using a cheap 40 degree sleeping bag as a top quilt and inserted a small foam pad in the bottom of the foot box. I got a relaxing, rejuvenating 10 hours of sleep. Awesome!!

  • Nice quality

High quality construction! Only had it down to 35 so far but it has so much loft. I know it will be true to its rating. packs up small!

Only had it to 35, but it’s very warm

  • Can you Hang?

    by Chill Bill – 28th Feb 2018

I ordered this quilt because it was affordable and I really wanted an underquilt. When I got it I was very impressed with the quality and for being an "econ" quilt it seemed top notch to me. Since then I purchased an expensive top and underquilt from another vendor I had been wanting for a long time (a deep winter set) and honestly there are things I like much better on the econ Phoenix. The suspension for one and the s biners, also the cut of it and how it tapers. I've already ordered and am waiting for a Hammock Gear 30° top quilt and a 30° full length underquilt set, both econ, if that tells you anything.
P.S. they gave me a sticker... so yeah, thats sweet

  • So far so good

    by Rich L – 29th Jan 2018

So far I have used this hammock most in my room and it always provides to much heat inside! I recently used it on an overnight where temps dropped down to the high 30's. Was nice and toasty all night!

  • econ is the way to go

I recently purchased the HG Phoenix Econ 20 UQ. I've used it twice and am very pleased with its performance and quality.

  • new guy to hammocking

    by axetowax – 13th Sep 2017

I finally decided to take the plunge being a complete newbie...
typed in the order, hit the send button and a UPS truck stopped in front of the house!...Wow that would have been cool. Well he didn't come here but three week later it came.... Only got to use it once but what a difference this made. Temps were only in the low 50's but was nice and cozy... Am looking forward to some cooler temps....

  • Great Quality and Great Value

    by Ryan M – 6th Sep 2017

Slept for a full week with an Econ 20 Under and 30 Top. Stayed warm and cozy every night. Setup and adjustments was easy and intuitive. Very little 'fiddle factor'. Everything lined up nicely with my Dutchware Chameleon. The fabric and stitching quality is incredible. Not a single loose thread to be found. This line of quilts is a game changer for newbies and veterans alike. Now I have to talk myself out of a full winter set! :)

  • ECON 20 - No More CBS

    by Russ B – 8th Aug 2017

Thanks for offering such a quality underquilt to those of us who have product envy at every hang. I can't give enough stars to HG for crafting a down underquilt without missing a stitch and at a price point that allows me to sleep so well under the stars!

  • Qualité Hammock Gear d'un bout à l'autre.

    by Christian St. – 26th Jun 2017

Ma deuxième underquilt en quelques mois et toujours impressionné de la qualité à un tel prix. Simplement imbattable. Thanks a lot to the Hammock Gear team.

  • I love it, couldnt be happier

    by Adam K – 2nd Jun 2017

The quality to price ratio is off, this seems like it should cost a lot more. Very happy and warm with my new econ under quilt. If you are thinking of getting one just do it you will thank yourself especially if it's your first underquilt. No more foam pads for me.

  • Top Notch!

    by Jebb G. – 30th May 2017

I'm still amazed at the quality of these econ quilts. I bought a 20 degree phoenix for my son in burnt orange to match his hammock, and he absolutely loves it. I give him a hard time telling him that dad might have to confiscate his UQ. I hope this econ line sticks around for good, as it makes investing in down much more affordable for those on a budget. Thanks Hammock Gear!

  • Great Quilt!

    by Mark H. – 14th May 2017

My econ 20 quilt came last week. I have to say, that the quality of this quilt is outstanding! I own a 20 degree burrow top quilt as well as a 40 degree, and the quality of the econ quilts are in line with their higher and models. I needed my quilt a few weeks early, and Harry, the production supervisor took good care of me. I will be ordering another underquilt for my son's hammock in the very near future.
