Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 12/5/2018 have a lead time of approximately 10 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Economy Incubator

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Economy Incubator is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  With 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down, this underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to its temperature rating. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Economy Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Economy Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, storage sack, and a stuff sack.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. Perfect fit

Posted by Timo Haapasaari on 30th Nov 2018

As I am still new to hammock camping this was my first ever underquilt. I’ve heard of people having all sorts of trouble adjusting these. I had no trouble fitting it to my Hennessy Explorer and when I changed to Chameleon I was afraid it wouldn’t be as easy this time. Well I was wrong! It’s kept me warm even down to 15F!

    Nice and toasty!

So far I have only used this one night to test, a rainy and 40 degree night but this kept me very comfortable in my hammock. Best sleep of my life!

    Easy & warm

Posted by Kristen Trevey on 23rd Oct 2018

This is my first UQ and I recently tried it for the first time. Temps only dipped to ~50F at night but it kept me warm–in fact, when the sun came up I had to slide it to the side because I was too toasty! It was intuitive to set up & adjust. I did notice that the leg/foot region sometimes slipped out from underneath my asymm hammock's footbox, but that may just mean I need more practice with those lower straps. Either way, it was easy to reach down & slide it back into place, and it only happened a couple times. The fabrics are really nice & it packs down & lofts up as needed. I also really appreciate the cotton storage bag. I recommend this product for sure. It's a great value.

    Love This Company

I already had an Econ Phoenix 40, which I use for the majority of the cooler weather months (we're in Texas). I bought the Econ Incubator 20 last year to use in the Winter months when temps drop to freezing and below. I've taken the Phoenix down to the upper 30s without any issues, but we had some truly cold (for Texas) weather last Winter, with temps dropping into the teens. I sleep warm, so the 20 degree Incubator was my UQ of choice. I bought the long (I'm tall), with everything as it comes. It works beautifully.

I took it down to 13 degrees this past January and was warm and toasty. I paired it with a 15 degree down top quilt (not an HG Burrow, sorry) and was completely comfortable both nights. The design of HG's under quilts is perfect. From the suspension design to the baffling to the draft collars ... everything just works. The outer fabric is DWR treated ... which is a huge relief. This past weekend (with my Phoenix) we got a lot of rain our first night, and I was not worried about wind and side rain (again, we're in Texas, it does that here). My down stayed perfectly lofted and dry, and I was in sleepy dream land without concerns for my gear.

I love this company. I am looking at another top quilt to fill those cooler months when temps are in the 40 - 60 degree range ... and HG is at the top of my list. Their products are made very well, the prices are exceptionally competitive, and their customer service is excellent.

    Top quality--great price!

Posted by Chris Owens on 16th Oct 2018

I have the 20 deg Econ Incubator and I love it. I hammock camp nearly once a month with our BSA troop. When I first started I didn't use a quilt, and woke up a couple of nights shaking. I tried a DIY underquilt but was still cold. Next I tried a synthetic quilt which was adequate in the 50s-60s, but was pretty bulky and heavy. I knew I'd need a down underquilt if I was going to stay warm (I sleep pretty cold) and keep my backpacking weight reasonable. I did a LOT of research before pulling the trigger on a down quilt. The Econ Incubator from HammockGear was by far the best value available. I let they guys at HG know I needed the quilt by a certain date to make our January BSA backpacking trip, and they got it to me in time. It is extremely comfortable, packs down small and light, and is easy to set up. I've slept in freezing temps and been toasty warm with my 20 degree synthetic bag over me like a top quilt, and in cool weather with only a fleece blanket on top. If you're on the fence, order it. You won't regret it.
Now I'm eyeing the Econ Phoenix for my kids (and maybe me as well).

    Great service....

Arrived just in time for a trip to BWCA. Nights got in the 40's, but I was never cold; always comfortable. Bonus was the light weight for packing in. I will add an over quilt for next year's trip....

Does the job very well Econ 30

Posted by James Frazier on 3rd Sep 2018

I love that you can buy something at a fair price and it actually exceeds your expectation. The quality is great, it connects to my henessee hammock perfectly. So easy to set up. The warmth this provides is amazing. It is super light compared to others. Only complaint is I wish it came in brighter colors.
