Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 2/11/19 have a lead time of approximately 5-6 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Economy Incubator

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Economy Incubator is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  Our Economy Incubator series utilizes downproof 1.1 oz / yd² (20D) Calendared Nylon Taffeta fabric and 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down. This underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to its temperature rating. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Economy Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm.
The Economy Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, storage sack, and a stuff sack.

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. Econ Incubator 20F Short - Great Buy!!

Posted by Tim on 30th Jan 2019

I'm so glad I got this underquilt! This is my first purchase from HG and my first underquilt. Had excellent customer service with my order and received it in very good time. The quality of the build is top notch and the price is amazing. I have done several DIY projects and I don't think you could build an underquilt of this quality for the prices you find on Hammock Gear.

I slept out in my new setup the first night I got my UQ and the temp got down to 25F and I stayed comfortably warm with my 20F Incubator underneath and my DIY 5oz/sq.yd Climashield Apex Top Quilt. dressed in thermal base layers, a light fleece top and medium weight wool socks. I feel quite confident in the advertised temperature rating.

I ordered the short version (I am about 5'9") and it had plenty of coverage for my feet and plenty to go past my shoulders. For me, it was worth the slight savings in cost and weight to get the short version because I don't really need it to cover my head.

I am very happy with my purchase and the experience ordering from Hammock Gear. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for high quality gear at a great price and I would happily purchase from them again in the future.

    You already know

Just get one. The 2-4 ounce difference between this and the premium version is only 2-4 ounces. That's what 2-4 ounces of water weighs! Just piss slightly more often and spend the $100 you saved on a local one-nighter with a fancy meal or a thoughtful gift for your mom. Also the underquilt is really nice.

    Economy incubator long

Posted by Andrew on 22nd Jan 2019

I had previously bought the regular and it worked so incredibly well I fell in love but being 6ft and more than 225 # I thought the regular did not quite stretch long enough to cover my toes and shoulders at night. I was pleased that out of the box the long fit me perfectly. I have since gifted my regular to my fiance whom bvb is much smaller and she says fat chance getting it back. I have come home to her outside a few nights reading a book in her hammock with her incubator in the 30 or 40 degree weather we have been having. I am anxious to really test these out down to the 20 degrees they are rated for, but have not had the time and cold weather to do so yet.

    Excellent Product

Posted by Tara B. on 17th Jan 2019

I bought this as a gift for my husband. He loves winter camping and this was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Before he went camping he tested it out in the backyard and had me try it to show me how warm it keeps his hammock. He loved it. I ordered it 5 weeks before Christmas Eve and it arrived the day before Christmas Eve. I even sent the company an email the week of Christmas asking them if it would arrive in time and the customer service was great- he said it should but if not he would be happy to write my husband a personal letter. Worth the price and time for the quality and handmade care put into it!

    Winter Storm Diego 2018

Posted by Scott Kent on 23rd Dec 2018

18 degrees (F) on Wesser Bald, 15 degrees toward Cold Springs and me with a 20 degree Econ Incubator...not a problem at all. This under quilt with the right hammock goes well below it's temp rating. I was toasty the whole time. I do believe the cold contributed to the metal gate on the S carabiner at the head breaking off, but the hook still held even without the gate so that wasn't really a problem. Amazing quality and the best value around.

    Amazing Product and Amazing Service!

Posted by Yonah on 22nd Dec 2018

I used my hammock and loved the overall design but made a mistake in setting it up. In short I broke the S-Biners and worried of the mistake contacted Harry from customer support. He was extremely helpful and sent me a new set of S-Biners. A great product is one thing but but great customer service really takes the cake. I will be ordering from Hammock Gear next time I need a new UQ or TQ!

    Perfect fit

Posted by Timo Haapasaari on 30th Nov 2018

As I am still new to hammock camping this was my first ever underquilt. I’ve heard of people having all sorts of trouble adjusting these. I had no trouble fitting it to my Hennessy Explorer and when I changed to Chameleon I was afraid it wouldn’t be as easy this time. Well I was wrong! It’s kept me warm even down to 15F!

    Nice and toasty!

So far I have only used this one night to test, a rainy and 40 degree night but this kept me very comfortable in my hammock. Best sleep of my life!
